SIDESHOW COLLECTIBLES
Asajj Ventress Premium Format Figure

After a slight break, the Yakface reviews return today with a look at another masterful work from our fine sponsor Sideshow Collectibles: the Asajj Ventress Premium Format Figure (Exclusive Edition).

For those unfamiliar with the Premium Format line, these 1:4 scale figures (approx. 18"H) feature a heavy-weight cast polystone body, are hand finished and painted to exacting standards and are intricately detailed in expertly tailored real fabric clothing. Each Premium Format figure includes a thematic polystone mounting base making for an attractive and stable display piece. Sideshow Collectibles releases a limited production run of these figures and each are individually numbered. With some figures, a unique accessory is included producing an Exclusive Edition that is only available through Sideshow Collectibles.

PACKAGING

Sideshow not only produces a museum quality product, the four-color packaging itself is simplistic, yet elegant and fully displayable. The front and side panels of the box each display a unique portrait of Ventress brandishing her lightsaber while the back of the box shows several images of Ventress's visage pulled from the different animation and illustration sources in which she has appeared. The back of the packaging also gives a brief synopsis of Asajj's back story and role in the downfall of the Jedi Order. it reads:

Deep and layered are the schemes of the Dark Lord Sidious, Sith Master and architect of the fall of the Republic. Perceiving in young Anakin Skywalker a strength as yet unseen among even the greatest of the Jedi, the Sith Lord engineers elements into his plans, rich in contingencies, that might either turn the troubled Jedi to his own purpose, or else destroy him altogether. One such element is the dark Force warrior Asajj Ventress.

Found by Sidious' apprentice Count Dooku on the harsh world of Rattatak, Ventress is recruited into the service of the Sith. Gaunt and bitter, the wiry assassin is trained in the Jedi arts, but her heart is a cold, blackened stone, scorched by resentment against the Jedi who abandoned her and hardened by the cruelties of her brutal world. In a savage gladiatorial contest, Ventress displays lethal excellence. Her remorseless slaying of her competitors, either with precise lightsaber strokes or cruelly innovative wielding of her ample Force powers, impresses the Sith, though Dooku himself tests her to determine the true depth of her resourcefulness and mastery of the darkest applications of the Force. Ventress is provided with a ship, new weapons and a purpose - to destroy Anakin Skywalker - a task to which she takes with glee.

Though Dooku is confident in his new assassin's abilities, Lord Sidious knows that her victory or failure is immaterial. Ventress, for all her Sith aspirations, will only ever be a tool for him to wield and throw away. She will either kill Anakin, removing one more Jedi impediment to his own ascension, or through death by his saber, she will move the youth ever closer to the Dark Side and assist Sidious' acquisition of him as a disciple.

SCULPT/PAINT/LIKENESS

Sideshow's artisans have put forth a fantastic effort here in capturing a rather stoic interpretation of Ventress from a facial sculpt aspect and overall body pose. I was surprised that they went this route as most imagery of her features her in a much more expressive nature. But with that said, her pose is rather elegant and conveys an outward confidence very befitting of a Sith. This figure also has interchangeable right hands one holding one of her signature lightsaber hilts and the other being an open hand that looks as if at any moment could clench into a fist or rise up and unleash a powerful surge of Sith lightning.

Paint applications on this figure are done very well for the most part, aside from a few areas of bleed over, mostly on the hands where it transitions from "skin" to the hilt of her lightsabers. On this particular version her left thumb is the most serious offender in that regard. I imagine that not all figures produced would have this same exact flaw but it is something that mars and otherwise flawless piece. The boots and areas covering her neck and forearms are painted a brown-black that the give the distinct impression of leather complete with worn and weathered areas and are accented with painted rivets and buckles. The figure's base also shares the same color palettes as the leather areas and has an industrial look sculpted to resemble a grated floor.

Obviously, likeness is not really an issue here as Asajj really only exists in an animated or illustrated form so matching her portrait to an actor is not a crucial as say achieving Mark Hamill's or Harrison Ford's likeness. Speaking of likenesses, this particular figure being the Exclusive Edition, includes interchangeable portraits (heads) that provide the collector the ability to chose a "realistic" version of the head complete with facial tattoos or a more gaunt and angular animation-style portrait, with pupil-less eyes. In a perfect world, I think it would have been great to have received third portrait, matching Asajj's look in the new Clone Wars movie/animated series as that character has a very distinct look as well.

Grade: A

CLOTHING/SOFTGOODS

This figure has a formfitting body suit with flowing skirt and cloak plus a leather-like vinyl belt adorned with buckle, metal O-rings and covertec-style lightsaber clips. Overall, the detail of the outfit is very well done - from the stitching on all the seams and hems to how the fabric naturally lays and drapes over the body. It makes for a very authentic presentation in the right lighting conditions, you'd swear it was alive.

Grade: A

SUMMARY

Straight "A"s across the board, even with the minor paint defects, Sideshow continues to reinforce their place in producing some of the finest collectibles on the market today. While the pricing of Premium Format line may be a deterrent for all but the most devoted of collectors, you surely get what you pay for as the Asajj Ventress figure is well worth the investment and will look gorgeous on display front and center in anyone's collection.
