Scandalous! GTA IV Sex Scenes Censored?
Grand Theft Auto Hood has been doing some continuing reports on sex scenes being censored in GTA IV: The Lost and the Damned. In their first report, the Hood reporter was minding his own business outside of a strip club, when he decided what the heck... let's pick up a hooker or two! Much to his chagrin, the sex scene did not pan out as intended. Instead, the camera locked at the back-end of the car with only some bouncing to be seen.

In their second news article, GTA Hood reports that the censorship was actually a mixup, which revolved around a European patch for the game. Seems they got Australia's cut version and vice versa! Aussies 1, Euros 0. Interesting mix-up. Could there be a conspiracy here? A sneaky way to get the uncut version into the land down under, where women glow and men plunder?

The most recent GTA Hood post states that a new patch has restored the censored bits and the Euro pervs have their bits 'n bobs back. Yay! I have to wonder if the Aussies will stick with this patch or continue to patch the game knowing that they will likely end up with the cut version again.

Halo Wars Review
It's almost moot at this point considering that Microsoft has already shut down Ensemble, but just in case you were curious, IGN has reviewed Halo Wars:
Halo Wars deftly dodges between the hardcore micromanagement of real-time strategy and the instant gratification expected by Halo fans. Ensemble has nailed console RTS controls, but at the expense of some depth. The campaign missions often seem overly scripted and the experience doesn’t have the wide-open feel of some other RTSs. But the Halo feel is most definitely present, and serves as one of the game’s biggest strengths. The cinematic cutscenes are gorgeous, if the narrative is somewhat thin in places. Overall, Halo Wars is a fresh and expertly polished approach to the console strategy genre, and it’s a fitting goodbye from a beloved studio.
PAX Pre-Registration Is Open
There are a lot of PAX freaks in the network, so many a peep will be happy to know that pre-registration is now open for the event! The sixth annual gaming festival will be held September 4-6, at the Washington State Trade and Convention Center in Seattle.

Last year's impressive program of over 70 exhibitors, a keynote address from noted industry professional Ken Levine, awesome music concerts and inspiring industry panels drew 58,500 attendees to the expo. Further information on PAX 2009 exhibitors and events will be available later this month. Find out about pricing and all that good stuff in the attached press release.

Kinky looking weird scenario from last year's PAX.

Fallout 3 Lead To Give GDC 2009 Keynote
Emil Pagliarulo, lead designer for Fallout 3 will be the keynote speaker for the Game Career Seminar, during GDC 2009, at San Francisco’s Moscone Center. The keynote will be done interview style with Spike TV's Geoff Keighley. The speech will cover Pagliarulo's life story, to explain how he got where he is today, and will guide attendees through his career path. Hmm, he almost became an elementary school teacher.

“Emil’s story helps illustrate what can happen when we choose to pursue something we’re really passionate about,” says Meggan Scavio, the director of Game Developers Conference. “Geoff and Emil’s chat is the perfect way to learn how a unique life, passion and capitalizing on opportunities can lead to a career in game development at any stage in one’s life.”

Raycatcher Makes Me Proud To Be Canadian
A press release coming out of Vancouver, BC, announces 'Raycatcher', a new PC game from Thinking Studios and Slam Dunk Studios. This cutting edge game will sync up its gameplay with your MP3s. Nah, we're not talking DDR here. Here's the dillio... Create custom playlists, then spin colourful clusters of shapes to catch multi-coloured rays. This causes your cluster (tee hee) to grow, evolve and unlock new evolutionary stages. There are 30 stages to play through and the game will be out in March 2009.

You can download a demo of the game and view a video (which I won't embed here because uhm, I want to live) of the gameplay. Egads, they have some pretty crap music on their playlist.

More Metacritic Ranting
Metacritic has come under fire lately, with various developers and members of the media calling it bunk. In the latest Meta-Rant, Edge Online tells us why Metacritic doesn't matter. While there is a high correlation between review ratings and game sales, developers at DICE 2009 responded with an overwhelming "NO", when asked if they design games with reviewers in mind.

The consensus among panelists was review scores in and of themselves don't matter. Fingers pointed to the success of games like Wii Fit that scored in the 60 percent range. Reviews of such games just aren't relevant to their audience, says Rich Hilleman, chief creative director at Electronic Arts. Social gamers are not the people who are going to be reading hardcore game magazines.

Chris Taylor of Gas Powered Games doesn't need Metacritic scores. He knows if he's put out a "shitty game". Then why put it out to begin with? /Snicker. Oh yeah, $$$. Here's a classic quote:

The worst part about these reviews, says Mona Hamilton, SVP of marketing at Capcom, is they are suggestive--and their scores often depend on how drunk you got the media at a Street Fighter event.

Oh my, say it ain't so.

Hope For Xbox'ers With AWOL Achievements
Remember the Xbox Live Fiasco mentioned the other day, in which expired emails were causing players to lose their Gamertags and achievements? Well, it sounds like the heat got turned up for Microsoft, as they have responded to issues. From GamesIndustry.biz:

In a statement issued by Major Nelson, in response to the story broken by GamesIndustry.biz earlier this week, it has emerged that a gamer's achievement points can be recovered from an expired account, as long as they still remain on the Xbox 360's hard drive.

Previous advice from Microsoft customer support had recommended that the only solution to the issue was for a user to start afresh with a new Gamertag, explaining that achievements and friends lists weren't transferable.

But now the corporation is working on a solution that will enable users to link their Gamertags to new Windows Live IDs should their existing one become dormant through inactivity, meaning users will therefore not need to set up a new Gamertag.

If you were affected by this SNAFU then you can find further instruction on what to do here.

It looks like my 24 incher is going to be out of commission for at least a week. And yes, in case you're wondering, I'm referring to my gaming machine's display. I had hoped to get a loaner or something while it was at the shop getting repaired, but I guess Fry's is the only store around here that does that.

Today's question:

What games topped your most played list last week?

Meet Dave Perry on Crack
Dave Perry, whom you might recall fondly from his days at Shiny, thinks that 'The Days Of Single-Player Games Are Numbered':
The future, according to Perry, is online and free-to-play. "I perosnally think the days of single-player games are numbered," he said. "Without question, our focus is entirely on multiplayer."

Showing names like Shigeru Miyamoto and Hideo Kojima on the screen, Perry said Japan has produced some of the best video game designers of all time -- "but would you be willing to bet China will never produce one of those names?" he asked.

If that level of talent emerges in China or Korea, and decides to make games using the free-play-model, traditional game developers with traditional business models may be unable to compete for an audience, Perry warned.

American McGee's Alice Reloaded
For better or worse, American McGee's Spicy Horse studio will be attempting to remake Alice.

“This new project is a dream come true for me and the fans who’ve kept the Alice flame alive,” said American McGee, senior creative director at Spicy Horse. “EA gave us creative latitude and support on the original game which resulted in something beautiful and daring. This trip through the looking glass promises to be even more exciting.”

“EA Partners is thrilled to team up with American McGee and Spicy Horse on the next installment of the Alice franchise,” said David DeMartini, senior vice president and general manager of EA Partners. “American McGee’s interpretation of Alice was an instant classic, and EA Partners is ready to help him bring his innovative vision for the franchise to even darker, more exciting places.”

Look for the new and improved Alice to hit the PC, 360 and PS3 in the not-too-distant future.

Aion Producer's Letter Outlines Western Expansion
- 12 Comments
NCsoft whipped out a Producer's Letter for Aion which mostly talks about how and when it will be releasing the MMO to Western markets (it's already live in Korea). Thanks, MMORPG.com.
1) When will Aion be released in North America/Europe?

We expect to ship Aion in NCsoft West territories in the fall of 2009.

2) Why is localization taking so long?

The localization effort is enormous, with a vast amount of content. Aion is not simply being translated, a team of dedicated content writers are re-creating the written dialogue and content to provide AAA quality and to ensure that it is culturally relevant for our audience. We are going to do this launch "right" rather than fast.

Blizzard Overhauls The Zerg
StarCraft II Q&A; - Batch 49 is now online at Battle.net. The theme is how Blizzard overhauled the Zerg art and posted a bunch of comparison images. Many of them aren't loading at the moment (the site is probably getting crushed) but The StarCraftwire posted local copies which are laid out rather nicely.
5) What is a good counter for Zerg against Marines, which are upgraded from the original StarCraft?

Zerg actually have a few options that are quite effective. Zerglings can catch Marines out in the open and surround them relatively easily. Secondly, Banelings with the burrow ability are also very effective. There is nothing more gratifying than watching a group of Marines walk over a burrowed Baneling. When it unburrows – BOOM! Another counter that can be used are Roaches with burrow. A player can burrow a Roach at low health for it to regenerate back to full health in seconds, at which point it can unburrow and begin attacking the Marines again.

In late game, Infestor’s with their fungal scourge ability, which causes a biological unit to take damage over time until the unit explodes and does an area of effect damage, decimating groups of Marines easily if the opponent is not fast to react. Additionally, Ultralisks with their new cleave attack as well as 200 more hit points from the original StarCraft also make them an excellent counter to massed Marines.

Mirror's Edge DLC Finally Released
After a few delays, the Time Trial map pack for Mirror's Edge has been released for the oh-so low price of 800 points or 10 bucks (depending on which platform you play). The Mirror's Edge 2D game is fun too.
Players will be challenged to achieve the fastest times possible on nine races across seven all-new and totally redesigned Time Trial maps. No guns, no cops, and no city: this is true aesthetics, agility and flow that will challenge any runner. This special DLC pack is available for $10 USD or 800 Microsoft points. As an added bonus, all PlayStation 3 Mirror’s Edge fans can now download an additional map for free.

Time Trial is a popular mode in Mirror’s Edge that challenges players to find the fastest route across various maps. Players can upload their best time to the Mirror’s Edge leaderboards for their friends to download and compete against. Players can see their friend’s ‘ghost’ run as they race their way through the course to the top of the leaderboards.

Mirror’s Edge delivers players straight into the shoes of Faith, a modern day heroine who traverses the vertigo-inducing cityscape, engaging in intense combat, fast-paced chases and challenging puzzles. With a never-before-seen sense of movement and perspective, players are drawn into Faith’s dangerous world.

Valve's Gabe Newell: DICE 2009 Keynote
The Feed had some live blogging going on for DICE 2009. This year Valve Software's Gabe Newell took center stage. Picking through the live blogging, there was talk about piracy, DRM, Steam stats, TF2 character videos and comics, Left 4 Dead price cut, and you can read the rest here. This bit at the start made me snicker.

6:01 PM - The keynote is officially one minute late. Jeez. Valve can't even ship a keynote on time!

6:04 PM - I just got word that Gabe's beta speech was stolen from the green room and it wasn't very polished. He's hard at work refining his speech and we expect to kick off "when it's done."

What's A Superhero To Do?
Cryptic's Bill Roper chats with MTV Multiplayer to answer questions regarding the Champions Online X360 progress, how multiple superhero MMOs can exist, and what he'd like to see happen with the "Hellgate" property.

Champions Online is already running on the Xbox 360, but apparently any hold ups with the game will come down to the business end of things. On Champions vs. DC Universe:

We don’t really know when “DC” is coming out, unless you believe the rumors on the web or not, but they’ve neither confirmed nor denied a release date. And “City of” has been out for a long time. So I think we’re in a great window to get out there where people want to try a new superhero MMO but they don’t know how long they’re going to have to wait for whatever’s next.

As far as Hellgate: London goes...

MTV Multiplayer: Does it feel weird that “Hellgate” is moving on with HanbitSoft?

Roper: Well, I’d be interested to see if it does. I haven’t heard anything or seen anything. I am upset, obviously, that whatever happened happened — that we had to close the studio [Flagship Studios], that we couldn’t keep the [intellectual property] and do things with it. But for the fans that we did have, it would be great for them to get more of “Hellgate,” and especially [unreleased game] “Mythos,” if that ever happens. But ultimately, it was much more of a challenge than I think maybe the new people who came and took over at HanbitSoft realized. It’s one thing to go, “Oh this is great! We’re going to get the IPs, and we’ll just make the games!” But it’s been eight months, and they haven’t updated it. Namco had to close the services down just at the end of January. So I’ll be interested to see what happens when it happens.

10 Webbies For The Wee Ones

If you have kids cruising the old www, then you may want to take a peek at this article on the top websites for kids. The author found that her daughter's favourite games for girls website was teaching them how to makeout, so she went to town looking for safe havens. I dunno, she's gonna learn how to makeout eventually. What better a spot to learn about the birds and the bees than from a site that not only includes Kissing Games, but also features "Oriental Kissing Games"? I dunno, I guess Oriental kissing is different from other kissing? I feel scared and confused right now. You can read about online spots for the kiddos at Digital Trends.
