MEXIA, Texas -- Thousands of miles from the private jets, island residences and the otherwise lavish lifestyle his son leads, the elderly father of R. Allen Stanford sat behind his wooden desk at Stanford Financial Group's branch office in this tiny, half-crumbling town and stood up for his son.

Despite being worried about the troubles of his son -- a flamboyant financier who is accused of an $8 billion fraud and whose fortune Forbes estimated at $2.2 billion in 2008 -- the father says he defends and loves him.
