The England international goalkeeper reached 536 appearances - surpassing the total of Gary Speed - in Portsmouth's victory over Manchester City last weekend in the Barclays Premier League.

James has played at least 14 matches in each season since the inception of the Premier League and is part of an exclusive club that includes Ryan Giggs to have played in every season since the 1992/93 campaign.

After signing from Watford, James made his debut for Liverpool on the first weekend of the Premier League season in August 1992. He made 215 appearances for the Merseysiders before moving to Aston Villa in the summer of 1999. At Villa Park, he played 67 times in the league and transferred to West Ham United in July 2001 - where he made a further 63 top-flight appearances.

West Ham United's spell in the Championship persuaded James to join Manchester City in January 2004. Having played 93 times for the club, August 2006 saw Harry Redknapp sign the England stopper for Portsmouth, where he has played 98 times (up to and including 14 February 2009).

Due to his incredible record, Barclays, sponsors of the Premier League, felt it was important to honour the 38-year-old with an award.

James said: "To reach this landmark is a huge personal achievement and hopefully I can keep going for a while yet. I am very proud to receive this merit award from Barclays in recognition for all the hard work I've put in over the past 17 years."
