Coastal artillery is the responsibility of the army. Weapons include 57 mm guns, 6 in (152 mm) Vickers Mk5 turret-mounted guns and 12 in (304.8 mm) turret-mounted guns which were previously located in the Panama Canal Zone in the Second World War. However, it is believed that these are no longer in a fully operational condition.

Late in 1997, the Brazilian Army awarded AVIBRAS a contract for the ASTROS II coastal defence rocket system. In May 1998, four launching vehicles (6 × 6) and two ammunition vehicles (6 × 6) were delivered to the Brazilian Army and handed over to the 8th Motorised Coastal Artillery Group based in Rio de Janeiro. The Brazilian Army was the first customer for the coastal defence version of the AVIBRAS ASTROS II rocket system. After this first delivery, more ASTROS units were delivered to Brazilian Army to equip the 6th Motorised Coastal Artillery Group based in Praia Grande (Sao Paulo) and the 1st/10th Motorised Coastal Artillery Group based in Macae (Rio de Janeiro). Each of those units received two launcher vehicles and one ammunition vehicle. The 8th Motorised Coastal Artillery Group was completed with the receipt of the fire-control unit.
