    Nine years ago in Caracas, Venezuela, the first international juridical anti-corruption instrument, the Inter-American Convention Against Corruption, of the Organization of American States, was opened for signing

  • A world built on bribes? Corruption in construction bankrupts countries and costs lives, says TI report
    London, 16 March 2005 --- Transparency International’s Global Corruption Report 2005 shows how corruption in the construction sector undermines economic development, and threatens to hamstring post-conflict reconstruction in Iraq and beyond.
  • TI Initiative: Preventing corruption on construction projects
    Berlin, 16 March 2005 --- Worldwide, the construction sector is regularly rated as the most corrupt industry. Even so, the scale and effects of this corruption are frequently underestimated. The 2005 edition of Transparency International's Global Corruption Report highlights the devastating impact of corruption in construction and what can be done to prevent it.

February 2005

  • Ecuador faces institutional crisis.
    The current constitutional crisis in Ecuador finds its origins in actions taken by the Ecuadorian Congress in early December 2004. At that time, the Ecuadorian Congress violated the principle of judicial independence by purging nearly all of the Supreme Court justices. In a special session called by President Lucio Gutiérrez, 52 members of the 100-seat Congress voted to replace 27 of the 31 justices with their own political allies.

  • TI Russia finds systematic misuse of state resources in election campaigns
    31 Jaunary 2005 --- The misuse of administrative resources - resources of the state and public sector, such as state-controlled media, official staff time, telephone and transport facilities - is increasingly recognised as a serious type of political corruption in elections, particularly in the countries of the former Soviet Union. Such misuse undermines attempts to regulate election campaign finance and violates basic standards of democracy such as fair competition between incumbent and opposition parties.
  • Frequently asked questions on Corruption Issues in the Tsunami Relief Effort and Post-Tsunami Reconstruction
    14 January 2005 - The following questions and answers are designed to answer queries about the dangers of corruption and/or the lack of transparency in the humanitarian efforts to assist those affected by the recent tsunami disaster. They also address TI issues that are relevant to longer-term assistance to the region, including in the reconstruction and rebuilding phases to come, and the kinds of work TI is involved in as a response to this unprecedented disaster.
