A  COMPILATION  OF  LINKS  TO  REMOTE  SENSING  TUTORIALS

*** Note: The Remote Sensing Tutorial from the Applied Information Sciences Branch at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center  (The "Short" Tutorial) formerly hosted by the Applied Information Sciences Branch is now being hosted by the Remote Sensing Education and Outreach Laboratory of the EOS-Goddard Program Office (Code 420) at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.
The Applied Information Sciences Branch at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center is heavily involved in technology outreach and transfer. As part of this activity, we recognized the need for a highly intuitive, easily accessible remote sensing tutorial that hopefully will serve as a primer for the new user as well as a teaching tool for the educational community. We wanted this tutorial to provide a detailed understanding of the utility of the data in light of the fundamental principles of electromagnetic energy, especially as they relate to sensor design and function. The primary author of the Tutorial is: Nicholas M. Short, Sr. email: nmshort@nationi.net
http://rst.gsfc.nasa.gov/

*** The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing is pleased to offer this tutorial on remote sensing technology and its applications. This interactive module is intended as an overview at a senior high school or early university level and touches on physics, environmental sciences, mathematics, computer sciences and geography.

*** Watching Over Our Planet From Space  A wonderful first look at the subject of "Remote Sensing", this education kit is intended for students 11 to 15 years of age. It contains an introduction to remote sensing, twelve hands-on activities and a supplemental reading section, all rich with satellite imagery, photography and illustration. Students will become aware of the nature of satellite imagery and how it can be used to monitor environmental issues such as oil spills, forest fires, flood damage, mine wastes, forest clearcutting and land use.
The kit can be used in a self-directed manner and comes as a complete teaching tool. Using a paper copy, printed in colour, students follow clear instructions to interpret satellite images, making measurements, finding interesting features and answering questions.

The Digital Image Processing Simulator (DIPS) is an interactive Digital Image Processing learning tool. DIPS covers a core body of Digital Image Processing concepts which are usually taught in Remote Sensing courses and are critical to the understanding of image analysis.
DIPS tries to bridge a learning gap between classroom explanations of concepts and their demonstration on the image processing system. It has been designed in a way that it can be shared between the student and the teacher.

Distance education - Principles and Applications of Remote Sensing  This is an open distance education course on Remote Sensing. This introductory course will cover topics as they are taught at ITC during the core module phase of the educational program.
The content of the course is designed for three weeks full-time, but the course is spread over for six weeks to allow participants to follow the course even if they have only half days available. If more time is required, individual arrangements can be made with the lecturers prior to the commencement of the course.

** Geomorphology from Space is an out of print 1986 NASA publication edited by Nicholas M. Short, Sr. and Robert W. Blair, Jr. designed for use by the remote sensing science and educational communities to study landforms and landscapes.  The core of this book is a gallery of space imagery consisting of 237 plates, each treating a geographic region where a particular landform theme is exemplified. Commentary, photographs, locator maps, and sometimes a geologic map accompany each plate.
