We knew that THQ considered de Blob a sales success, but before now we didn't have a worldwide sales figure to match to the idea of "success". Now we do: 700,000 copies worldwide, and each sold at the game's original price point of $49.99. It's enough to have THQ banking on Wii in 2009 as part of a "three prong" strategy designed to keep the company from hemorrhaging any more money or jobs.

[THQ CEO Brian] Farrell described a "three-prong" Wii strategy that includes the publishing of high production value, "Nintendo-esque" games like de Blob, value titles like Big Beach Sports, which has sold over 1.3 million units, and licensed titles such as those found in the publisher's Nickelodeon portfolio.

Or, basically: good games, cheap crap, and licensed crap. Well, I guess that's one-third less crap than most publishers are managing on Wii, so I'll consider this a partial victory.

The ESRB has leaked it again, this time confirming a rumor from a few months back: that the cel phone game Final Fantasy IV: The After would be coming to the US as a WiiWare title. Well, actually, the ESRB just confirms that something called Final Fantasy IV: The After Years is coming out on "Wii", but I doubt even Square-Enix is ambitious enough to try and sell a 2D cel phone game at retail.

Here's the ESRB description of the gameplay, which is hilariously bland as ever:

This is a 2D role-playing game in which players embark on an adventure involving magical crystals and a mysterious kingdom. Players traverse across a field map or through dungeons and can enter into turn-based battles along the way. Players use a menu screen to select attacks or magic spells against tiny enemies (e.g., leopards, birds, knights, fish monsters, etc.) that blink and disappear when defeated. An item called "Bacchus Wine" is occasionally used to defeat enemies in battle.

Fortunately, despite the corrupting influence of the Bacchus Wine, FFIV: The After Years managed to get an E for Everyone from the ESRB. Now you can pretend like you're downloading it for a kid, instead of playing it to go on a nostalgia trip back to when you were a kid!

Today's a grim day for homebrewers and those who like to, uh, "sample" DS ROMs. Tokyo District Court has ruled against the makers of the R4 Revolution flash cart for DS, making the product effectively illegal in Japan.

What's important about this trial is that it sets a legal precedent for ruling such devices completely illegal, one that Nintendo could cite in trying to stop the sale of R4 in other piracy-prone countries like the United Kingdom and Korea. While piracy isn't a huge problem in the North American market right now, you can bet Nintendo would like to see sale of the R4 banned over here, too.

It just sucks that in the course of quashing piracy - which Nintendo has every right to do - the company inevitably quashes the creativity of amateur developers who like to publish homebrew for the DS. A lot of truly clever programs have made their way to the DS this way, but without flash carts we'll have no way to run 'em.

When compiling lists of the top five things for a specific category, everyone has their own opinions and thoughts on the situation. This post is no different — as I rank five of the top iPhone/iPod Touch applications you can have on your mobile device. Sure, you might think a completely different five are far above my choices, but hey, that's what this is all about. In the comments section, feel free to mention a game and back up your reasoning as to why it's so legit — allowing us all to broaden our game interests and discover some pretty fun "gotta-have apps." I chose five apps that range in gaming categories, not sticking to any one or two genres.

In no particular order:

1.  YAHTZEE Adventures (Electronic Arts): It's more than just getting five alike numbers, trust me. The adventure mode is incredible, featuring unique characters blasting with color and emotion. Various yahtzee gameplay include classic, rainbow, duplicate and battle. You can either shake your device to roll the dice or press the shaker cup on the screen, making it easier when passing your iPhone around when playing against friends. The game has a fun, feel-food presence about it and is stuffed with attainable awards, biographies, challenges and statistic boards. Price: $2.99
