Banta-Cain: 1-year deal

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff February 23, 2009 01:05 PM

The contract signed by OLB Tully Banta-Cain is a one-year deal, with a base salary of $620,000. The base salary is the minimum for a player of Banta-Cain's experience.

Banta-Cain's contract includes a $25,000 roster bonus, and about $30,000 in a workout bonus.

The contract qualifies for the veteran minimum benefit, meaning that Banta-Cain's salary cap charge is reduced.

The contract signed by TE Brad Listorti is a one-year package wth a $310,000 base salary.

  1. Wait. What just happened? I thought Tully was in SF. Did he come back to N.E.? What team is this contract for? Confused.

  1. Tully was released by Sf last week and the Pats resigned him, and announced the details today.

  1. I love that the Pats aren't afraid to bring someone back after they've made their money elsewhere. Too bad they can't pull this off more often; let your talent earn their big money elsewhere, let them ruin someone's cap and roster, and when they're willing to play for low to moderate money again, bring them back.

I wouldn't mind seeing more of willie mcginnest and david patten now that they've been paid by others. A lot of guys like that could be useful for one season...

  1. That's pretty much was to be expected. When though is the roster bonus to be paid? If it was right away, it would be announced as a signing bonus, yes? So is it one of those September 1st type things?

  1. Hi Nate. I don't have a date on the roster bonus. The assumption is that it's Sept. 5 or something like that (after the final cutdown).

  1. Jeff - I don't think McGinnest is around or this is his last season. We certainly paid him plenty when we was here...and he delivered.

Mike - what was Banta Cain's previous contract? This has to be somewhat humbling for him and Mike Nolan certainly thought he would flourish as a pass rushing specialist.
