Playoff probability sites

  • Sports Club Stats is my favorite :)
  • Baseball Prospectus computes MLB playoff chances 3 different ways.    Someone else generates graphs of BP’s current data.
  • Coolstandings.com does NFL, MLB, and NBA.
  • Playoffstatus.com does a bunch of sports, including NCAA Hockey.
  • Hockey Numbers does the NHL and has a bunch of other stats.
  • The defunct PlayoffOdds.net did a bunch of sports. Eric, its creator, stopped updating it around 2004. When asked why, Eric responded “…dog followed by kid” :)
  • Playoff Time was my first stab at Sports Club Stats, with 06 NHL and MLB, and some Word Cup throw in for kicks.

Technical stuff

  • I use C# to create the program that grabs the latest scores, computes the probabilities, outputs the results to an XML file, converts the XML to static web pages (with Saxon XSLT) and FTPs the pages to my webhost, A Small Orange.
  • Everything in the Home section, including the previous run on sentence, is generated with WordPress.
  • XML/SWF Charts makes the graphs pretty.
  • I use jQuery and clueTip to make the DHTML and AJAX easy.
  • The tabs along the top are from Sliding Doors of CSS by Douglas Bowman. I stole the css for the side tabs from GMail.
  • The team logos are from Chris Creamer’s wonderful SportsLogos.Net.
  • The translation flags are a mixture of Trevor Creech’s use of Google Translate and IconDrawer’s images.
