26 Catholic Leaders, Scholars and Theologians Offer Support for Sebelius

Bipartisan group reiterates the Catholic faith’s support for universal health care for all Americans

Today, 26 Catholic leaders, scholars and theologians publicly expressed support for the nomination of Governor Sebelius as the next HHS secretary. The statement calls attention to Sebelius successful efforts at reducing abortion in Kansas as well as the Catholic faith’s long standing support for universal health care:

Brownback supports Sebelius for HHS Secretary

Senator Sam Brownback stated that Kansas is "honored" to have fellow Catholic, Kathleen Sebelius, nominated as the next HHS Secretary. Brownback seemingly acknowledges the need for universal health care for all Americans - hopefully even for immigrants- by stating, "We are committed to ensuring that every American has access to quality, affordable, and personalized health care."

A values based upbringing

Governor Sebelius' public service to the State of Kansas demonstrates a strong commitment to the common good. Where did it come from? Sebelius received 17 years of Catholic education from the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. Receiving a Catholic values-based education from women religious demonstrated to Governor Sebelius at an early age that women could be strong leaders. The School Sisters also instilled in her a lasting concern for the less fortunate.

What does it mean to be pro-life?

In 2006, Governor Sebelius gave a speech to Kansans of Faithful Citizenship where she described her pro-life convictions. "If we work hard and match our rhetoric with our actions, we can create a culture that is more welcoming of mothers and treasuring of our children."

A Leader on Health Care Reform

Governor Sebelius is nationally regarded as a leader and an expert on health care. As Governor, as Insurance Commissioner, and as a State Legislator…for more than 20 years, Kathleen Sebelius has been committed to improving Kansans access to affordable, quality health care. Sebelius has worked to make prescription drugs affordable and has pushed for health care reforms. She has expanded health care access for all Kansans, including children and helped small businesses afford insurance. Sebelius’ leadership has been recognized nationally and Kansas is now ranked as one of the most affordable states for health care.
