Francine Zaslow Photography

Driven by self expression over trends, Boston photographer Francine Zaslow has a welcoming and beautiful online portfolio sharing her work… pages to turn, buttons to click, and music with a very hip lounge vibe making the experience transporting and relaxing. I recognized some of her work instantly from catalogs and websites like Fresh and Mariposa.

Fashion, food, interiors, it’s all there and completely inspiring. What a lovely site to get lost in on a Friday morning.

Creativity: Just Do It {5}
65

Broaden your horizons and challenge yourself is my chosen theme for this week’s creativity series. Want to talk about this for a moment? I hope so because I’m very eager to talk to you, get your feedback, and read your list of 10 things which I’ll get to in a moment. Okay, let’s get started.

I’m sure you’ll agree that most successful people today who make a positive contribution are creative thinkers who face challenge head on and allow themselves to explore, learn, and grow. Just look at Oprah Winfrey, Martha Stewart, Steven Hawking, Russell Simmons, even Heidi Klum (who has quite an interesting bio), and you will see a theme. They do not give up on their dreams, they are not their own worst enemy, they broaden their horizons and challenges do not stop them.

Another noticeable point is that they were not an overnight success. Baby steps. Often we think we’re not doing something right if we’re not instantly successful. We often lose track of a simple truth: one shot wonders rarely last. Shooting stars tend to burn out the quickest. I’m a huge fan of slow and steady wins the race in many instances. Consistency, challenging yourself, growing strong roots, learning, there’s so much more to a full life and success that takes actual time to build. Broadening your horizons and challenging yourself are two ways to become a more creative thinker and a happier more well rounded person because the more exposure you have to new thoughts and ideas, the more thoughts and ideas you’ll have. The more you open yourself to new experiences. The more in tune you become to your needs, dreams, and expectations of yourself and others become clearer. The more you push yourself you will gain confidence and a clearer voice.

Often people attribute success to being at the right place at the right time. While I believe this does happen, I believe that it does not happen by chance as much as some may think. I believe it happens for one sure reason: the person was there to begin with. They put themselves out there. Basically what I’m saying is that by stepping onto that stage to sing (while simultaneously being discovered by the talent agent in the audience) they were ON the actual stage, they got up there, they made the move. Everything they had already done led up to that moment and by placing themselves there on that stage they were discovered. Onlookers may then call them an “overnight success” but not really. They had been in training for many years whether they realized it or not. Every success, every failure, every challenge, it all brought them to that moment.

One lady I truly respect in the design world is Marcia Zia, one-half of the creative husband and wife duo behind Zia-Priven Design in North Hollywood, California. You may recall when she sat in on our “What To Do When You Don’t Know What To Do” series. If not, please read her inspirational and motivating words here. Marcia found her true calling as a sought-after lighting designer by following her own advice, “Taking classes in different fields was one of the greatest things that I ever did to find my direction,” she says. “When you discover your talents and where your creativity lies, inspiration will flow freely and the apprehension you once felt will dissolve into confidence and determination — Remember that your dreams are worth the time and the effort!”

How can you broaden your horizons? What do I mean by challenging yourself?

Here’s a good start. In the comments section below, because you are amongst friends here and I will certainly do the same, list 10 things that you want to learn more about. ANYTHING. There is NO wrong answer. These things do not have to be ones that you plan to do to earn a living, just list what you have a genuine interest in that perhaps you’ve put on the back burner for way too long.

After listing your ten things, ask yourself which one you are willing to commit to learning now. As in tomorrow. Note that in your comment here before everyone reading because it makes it real once on paper and out of your head.

Now it’s time to get started. Do some research and find a book, call a few of your contacts if someone you know has knowledge you want to tap into, enroll in a class, take an online workshop, sit in on a lecture, listen to a podcast (or several), do something that will enable you to learn about the one thing on your list of ten. Keyword being DO. If you like, take on the second and third and so on, but don’t get over zealous because that’s a nice way to fall flat and discourage yourself. Just take on what you can realizing that ONE is enough for now. Just get started, get moving, go forward, challenge yourself, broaden your horizons. Immerse yourself in inspiring new ideas and do not be afraid to challenge old ways of thinking. To borrow from Nike, Just Do It because you can do it.

So who wants to write their list and pick one from it that they will promise to look into further? C’mon, someone has to step up on the stage…

Perch! Design Letter Lights
20

When I first spotted the perch! design candle letter balls I went a little crazy but now they’ve rolled out letter lights I’m over the moon. You can purchase one ($110 each) or they will make them to order with any letters, words, names that you like. So cute for a commercial space, over the cash register for instance or in the window.

Each chandelier can be up to 6 letters so I guess your name or business name would need to be 6 letters or less. One idea is you could order one that spells out PAY or even HELLO for a store if your name is toooooo lonnng. The balls are connected so they stay aligned. As with all Perch! lights, you can order them hardwired with a white ceramic canopy or with a long cord with a switch and plug. Sweet!

Pink and red. Pink and red. Pink and red. It’s everywhere I go so why not put a p & r on decor8 today. Inchmark has a super adorable and easy DIY project so here you go. A little love fix from me to you.

Darling!

Don’t forget to notice the pink and red m&m’s and candy corns. Where are people finding candy corns like that? HELP me please. I need those things, not for my figure, but for the sheer cuteness of placing pink and red candy corns in a bowl in my entryway. Adore!

Loftlife Magazine
20

I came across this jaw dropper of a loft today on Loftlife magazine and nearly died. Badda bing! Can you imagine living like this? Sheesh.

This is the loft space of interior designer Andrew Flesher who loves to mix in antiques and vintage finds into his contemporary in Minneapolis. Soaring 13-foot-high ceilings, white concrete floors and an entirely open floor plan, his traditional upholstered pieces look beautiful combines with his vintage treasures. Gorgeous. See more here.

Stylist Eva Lindh
24

I enjoy Scandinavian design so much and very often find links to people and places that immediately put me in my happy zone. These images are so transporting, this bedroom is gorgeous. Everything you see here was styled by Stockholm talent Eva Lindh.

Norwegian blogger Anettes Hus talked about Eva, that is how I found her, and my eyes are enjoying the deliciousness on my screen at this moment — Eva’s commercial, interior and fashion work. Blown away!

No Sew Fabric Fortune Cookies
8

Are you looking for a no sew project that you can complete quickly using scraps of leftover fabric? Try making fabric fortune cookies! I realize that this is completely random but after seeing a tutorial for these on a German blog, Frau Liebe, I had to google the idea to see if I could find English instructions.  This photo below is a completed cookie by blogger Brassy Apple, her tutorial is linked below. Darling!

This is a fun project to do when you are in need of something quick, but if you have more time you can certainly stitch them closed versus using glue and bonding tape. Below you can find links to cookies you can sew and the no-sew version. There is also a link to making fabric Glückskekse in German. Imagine making red and pink cookies with little love notes inside?

Fun!

Keiko Morimoto Illustrations
7

I’m smitten by the illustrative work of Keiko Morimoto today. Born in Japan, raised in England, and currently living and working in Lausanne, Switzerland with her husband Christophe, Keiko’s work is alive with imagination and color.

In addition to her illustrations she creates paper mache dolls as a hobby that are a delight to behold. Keiko has worked with clients worldwide but sadly for us I’m not finding any of her illustrations or dolls available for purchase online. Oh well, they are still so inspirational to look at!

Thanks for the tip, Julia!

Photography by Yvette Inufio

Today I wrote about photographer Yvette Inufio at Real Simple and I have a feeling that you’ll really enjoy her work… See?

What a beautiful image to begin the day. This photo reminds me of my grandparents farm in the Spring — freshly dug earth, a vintage floral tablecloth, homemade iced tea sipped from a canning jar, a white cotton blouse with swiss dots, the smell of blossoming field flowers…

Make Do & Mend Print
22

I fell in love with this Make do & mend print from Bold & Noble, available in azure blue or warm stone. This print is perfect for the designers reading. The pretty typography had me at hello — I love the simplicity and subtle femininity here. Bold & Noble is a design collective in Hertfordshire, England founded by Jane Tobitt and David Wardle. David also runs DesignedbyDavid, a company that specializes in design, illustration and typography for publishing. Jane has created custom design solutions for clients in both public and private sectors for over ten years for several prestigious clients. Together they are Bold & Noble and I’m happy & excited to have found them!

This print is £30 or approximately $43 USD.

Keep Calm & Carry On has a new friend! What do you think? Like it?

My Inspiration Folders
54

I found a blog that I really connected to awhile back but then I forgot all about it until last night when it showed up again.  I seriously could not take my eyes off of the many images and I started to think about creating pretty collaged papers myself. All of the photos that you see in this post are my own work inspired by Record the Day.

a handmade tale

Do you know this blog? It’s lovely. I create books with images inside but lately I hadn’t felt much like doodling and pasting in my inspiration books. Plus my books are so permanent and I wasn’t feeling creative at all last night when I created the collages shown in this post. At least at first. The more I started to play around, the more inspired I became! That is the beauty of sometimes not over thinking something and just doing it! Record the Day encouraged me though her concept is a little different as instead of using words to blog she uses collected images glued to a piece of paper to show her readers what she is feeling or thinking or seeing on that particular day. It’s very cool. My idea was to use a similar technique to hopefully inspire me and it absolutely did!

playing house

Looking at the collaged images on Record The Day, I sat down last night with a stack of torn images from magazines, found papers, old wallpaper, some ribbons, a stack of old file folders, and a glue stick and for two hours and I just glued and cut. No music on, no television, my iPod touch and cell phone on ‘off’ tucked away in my handbag… just me in a quiet living room on the floor cutting and pasting. I thought about what inspires me and tried to include a lot of those things into each collage. I tried to think of feelings and experiences that I recently had. Suddenly my manilla folders came to life. I was only going to do one but completed eight. Perfection or artistic skill is not needed (as you can see), just a desire to have fun and enjoy the process.

travel time

It felt good to play a little, so today I’m going to encourage you to do the same if you can make the time for it. It was an easy, inexpensive, no frills way to inspire myself and have a little fun in the process. I was also looking for a quick fix, nothing that I needed to work on for days or weeks at a time. Just a quick session and I was finished.

Now I’m thinking of how much fun it would be to ask some of my friends to bring over collected images and things so we can sit around and do something similar as a small group. I guess it’s like scrapbooking or knitting circles… but less fuss and cheap (mostly recycled) materials. Maybe I could call my ladies night “Creative Cut + Paste” and serve some fun cocktails and homemade cookies.

What do you think? Could this be a fun hobby for you? Or maybe a fun girly night with your best buds? I’m always looking for easy, no frills but hands-on ways to get inspired…

New! Show:room
7

Check this out indie designers! Show:room is a wholesale to retail representative for independent designers — they provide a platform for small designers to expand their brands, gain exposure, and be a part of a “conventional” showroom. They work with independent designers who focus on small scale production and hand made products. They currently have 2 designers in addition to their own label, Hammocks & High Tea, but are working to add new designers to the fold so bookmark this site for sure!

A special thanks to Show:room owner Karen Young for telling me about this new business venture. I wish you all the best!

Butterflies at Made By Girl
10

Spring is in the air and Jennifer Ramos is a busy lady! Not only does she author a fab blog, but she has a cheery online shop called Made By Girl that many of you already shop at for prints, posters and cards. Today she has added some perky butterfly prints that she made by hand using some of her favorite fabrics from Amy Butler and Tina Givens. These are so crafty and cute!

Thank you Jennifer for showing these to us today — so fun. They make me long for Spring!

P.S. - If you are looking for more inspirational work spaces, visit the Made By Girl studio here.

Etsy Take Five Tuesday
18

This week I thought I’d try to find a few brand new etsy shops to include, ones that so far have zero sales and have never been blogged. I’ve also included a few favorites of mine who are better known but still make my heart go boom boom bada boom.

Berlinski: Handmade bags and clutches by Alison Willis in Sydney using vintage fabrics. I adore these… very stylish and current.

Herzenart in Germany designs dolls and things out of her home studio and I think her work is pretty special. Sandra Monat is such a sweet person, I’ve had a few conversations with her via email over the years, she’s not only talented but very warm and modest. I really like that recently she has brought her viking doll designs onto greeting cards — very sweet. {website} {blog}

These are a riot, prints of panties! Blue Pumpkin Juice is an artist in Belgium who apparently has a cheeky sense of humor. Fun!

Dr. Kennedy Jones is Hollie Chastain, an artist in Chattanooga who transforms scraps of crumbling paper and dusty, tattered books into art. {website}

Cary Walker of Little Love Blue crafts sweet little things out of wool in her Brooklyn home. {blog} {flickr}
