Rocky sailing away
Through the pages of the Rocky Mountain News and Denver Post, we discovered a passion for sports not unlike our own. One of only a handful of remaining two-newspaper towns, Denver, after today, no longer has that distinction.

Chat with Amalie Benjamin on Monday at 2 p.m.
The Globe's Amalie Benjamin checks in from Red Sox spring training in Fort Myers, Fla. at 2 p.m. on Monday to answer your questions about the team.
Despite questions, Sox aren't an iffy proposition
The Red Sox have their fair share of "ifs" this spring, and often that spells doom over the long season. But this club, with its professionalism and tremendous depth, are very likely to disprove such a notion.

Rays are big fish now

Third baseman Evan Longoria (above) and the Tampa Bay Rays know they have the proverbial bull's-eye on their backs in 2009. No more sneaking up on unsuspecting teams. Longoria crushed a two-run homer off Red Sox prospect Michael Bowden yesterday. (Boston Globe, 12 a.m.)

Tampa trainer rates assist

For the 2007 and 2008 seasons, Rays trainer Ron Porterfield worked tirelessly to get Rocco Baldelli back on the field, to the point where the Rays had to hire a second assistant trainer. He thought about what Lou Gehrig went through and said, "It broke my heart." (Boston Globe, 12 a.m.)

Bonds's trial delayed indefinitely

Barry Bonds's perjury trial in San Francisco was delayed indefinitely yesterday after federal prosecutors notified the judge overseeing the case that they will appeal her decision to exclude key evidence from the jury. (Boston Globe, 12 a.m.)

AP source: A-Rod to meet with MLB Sunday

Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez is scheduled to meet with Major League Baseball officials on Sunday to discuss his admission that he used performance-enhancing drugs from 2001-03 while with Texas. The timing of the meeting was disclosed Friday by a baseball official with knowledge of the session who spoke on condition of anonymity because no announcement was made. (AP, 2/27/09)

Lester getting up to off-speed

Jon Lester established himself as an ace last season, going 16-6 with a 3.21 ERA and dominating in the playoffs. But he is only 25 and, because of his unique career path, still developing. This spring, Lester is adding a changeup to his arsenal, a priority he unveiled yesterday in his first start of the spring. (Boston Globe, 2/27/09)

Ramírez rejects Dodgers

Manny Ramírez has rejected yet another offer from the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers announced last night the star outfielder's agent, Scott Boras , had declined a $25 million, one-year contract with a $20 million player option for 2010, the club's fourth offer this offseason. (Boston Globe, 2/27/09)
Josh Beckett (Globe Staff / Jim Davis)

Healthy change of pace for Beckett

There was nothing for Josh Beckett to do yesterday but pitch. No worries about an oblique strain or a problematic elbow, or any of the minor to major health concerns that limited him throughout the 2008 season. Of the 22 pitches (15 strikes) Beckett threw against BC, he estimated seven or eight were changeups. (Boston Globe, 2/26/09)

Lasting images for BC

It's a nifty tradition, this clash of NCAA and MLB we have when the Sox face BC each year. And like so many other things, it's unique to baseball. We don't see Jerry York's Eagles skating against the Bruins, or Tyrese Rice going one-on-one vs. Rajon Rondo. (Boston Globe, 2/26/09)

Nothing floats past Bard

It might have been his first tryout, at least in this incarnation, but Josh Bard showed off his knuckleball-catching skills last night. (Boston Globe, 2/26/09)
