     GO Transit Rail Improvement Program

Welcome to the GO Transit Rail Improvement Program. This is where you will find all the details about major GO Transit construction projects on our rails.

GO Transit has embarked on the comprehensive GO TRIP expansion plan to respond to the growing demand for more train service. The GO TRIP construction projects set the stage for a bigger and better GO Transit.

GO's overall expansion program, including the GO TRIP projects, is worth a billion dollars. The Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario, and municipal governments in the Greater Toronto Area all play a role in the funding, which comes through the Canada Strategic Infrastructure Fund.

On this website you will find descriptions for 12 projects across the GO Transit network. They include kilometres of new track on the Lakeshore and Georgetown lines, overpasses that will separate GO Train service from freight traffic, and improvements to allow GO Train service to extend north to Barrie. The various projects are listed in the menu to the left (click their names for details).

In addition to these 12 projects, GO Transit has embarked on an extensive renewal program for Union Station and the tracks approaching the station. The improvements will double the station's capacity to more than 80 million passengers per year, improve train operations and reliability, and reduce operating costs.

Keeping you involved, informed, and moving on time.

Our objective is to do the work with as little impact on riders and residents as possible, but just as with any program this large, there will be some delays and unforeseen events. GO TRIP will run for several years and will be broken down into several construction phases. These phases will allow service to be maintained while expansion happens. We will do our best to minimize inconveniences, and to keep you notified about anything that might affect your commute.

This website will provide the information you need to understand the overall expansion program and the work that is being done, and will prepare you for the changes that will occur as the work proceeds. We want to provide a long-range view to keep you involved, informed, and moving on time. We will of course continue to give you important news updates through signage, customer bulletins, e-news, and gotransit.com.
