Smith has spent three decades in baseball, first as a player over an eight-year big league career that included stints with the Indians, Twins and Orioles. Smith, 47, spent the past 13 seasons in the Pirates' organization, most recently serving as a special assistant to the general manager. From 1999-2004, Smith was an assistant general manager for Pittsburgh and was the interim general manager from June 11-12, 2001.
As a player, Smith -- a third-round Draft pick of the Phillies in 1979 -- finished his career with a 30-31 record and a 4.60 ERA. The right-hander was a member of the World Series champion Twins team in 1987, going 10-6 with a 3.92 ERA that year for Minnesota.
