The Bloodiest Chinese Massacre during WWII

During World War II, thousands of Chinese men and some women and children lost their lives as a result of a ruthless cleansing exercise conducted by the Japanese.  Namely Operation Sook Ching (Clean-up), it was supposedly intended to eliminate only those Chinese who were involved in anti-Japanese activities.  But identification methods were arbitrary and in reality many innocent Chinese people were taken away and either shot or bayoneted.

Official figures of the number killed is about several thousands but local sources say the true figure is closer to 50,000.  Sook Ching was carried from 18 February to 4 March 1942.  So which version is true?  SPI has been researching the traces of evidences to find the truth.
