Alex Daoud

The Singing Ex-Jailbird Mayor

Former Miami Beach mayor and ex-jailbird Alex Daoud came back on the scene this year with his tell-all book, The Sins of South Beach, in which he wrote about the good old days of Miami Beach politics when cocaine and cash-filled envelopes fueled City Hall (though things aren’t so different in the building department nowadays).

Eventually, Daoud was indicted on 41 counts of bribery and became a guest of the federal government for 18 months. But what a good time he had — at least according to his book — helping Miami Beach cops beat criminals until they were bleeding and half-dead, taking bribes from bankers and bagging chicks, such as über-lobbyist and former Miami Beach City Attorney Lucia Dougherty, before the feds ruined all the fun.

There are a lot of people who wish Daoud had remembered that what happens in Miami Beach City Hall stays there.

Power lobbyist and former Miami Beach Mayor Harold Rosen also had a starring, albeit fully clothed, role in The Sins of South Beach. And when David Kelsey, leader of the Tuesday Morning Breakfast Club, invited Rosen to publicly defend himself against Daoud’s allegations in December, Rosen not very politely declined.

So far the book hasn’t led to any indictments, but just the fact that Daoud continues to get the goats of some pretty powerful people makes him OK with us.
