The new series of US-funded drama The Tudors kicked off on BBC2 on Friday, August 1, with more than 2 million viewers.

The series, commissioned by US cable network Showtime, which stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers as a young King Henry VIII, attracted 2.3 million viewers and an average audience share of 11% in the 9pm hour, according to unofficial overnight ratings.

However, Big Brother won the slot with 3.6 million – an 18% share – tuning in for the announcement that politics student Luke Marsden would be the latest housemate to be kicked out of the Channel 4 reality show.

A further 197,000 watched Big Brother on Channel 4 +1 an hour later.

Marsden's live eviction interview brought 3 million – a 19% share – to Channel 4 between 10.35pm and 11.10pm, with a further 171,000 watching on Channel 4 +1.

ITV1's repeat of Agatha Christie's Poirot picked up 3.2 million and a 16% share between 9pm and 11pm.

BBC1's comedy line-up saw panel show Would I Lie to You gain 2.7 million and a 13% share from 9pm, with a repeat of The Armstrong and Miller Show drawing 2.1 million and a 10% share between 9.30pm and 10pm.

The second instalment of Channel 4 sketch show The Kevin Bishop Show drew 1.9 million viewers and a 10% share between 10pm and 10.35pm; with a further 132,000 on Channel 4 +1.

Channel 4's new comedy entertainment show Tonightly picked up 700,000 and a 7% share between 11.10pm and 11.40pm, plus a further 39,000 on Channel 4 +1.

Channel Five's Superstars pulled in 900,000 and a 5% share in the 8pm hour, with American drama repeat NCIS gaining 1.2 million and a 6% share in the hour from 9pm.
