I'm not a big target shooter, dart thrower, or archer, but I know what its like to hit a bulls eye. Chevrolet hit the center of the bulls eye with the redesigned 2008 Malibu. Assembled here in Kansas City the Malibu becomes the target for all mid sized sedans. I know the reputation and accolades bestowed on Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, but for 2008 the Chevrolet Malibu is the new benchmark.

Frankly I was embarrassed when GM first introduced the 2004 Malibu assembled by my neighbors at the GM Fairfax Plant. Built on the Epsilon platform underpinning the European Opel Vectra and Saab 9-3, I expected great things four years ago. But when the reality of how they had cheapened the car really hit me, I even became concerned about the future of General Motors in Kansas City. Fortunately the foundational architecture of the Epsilon platform is superb allowing the Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6, and Saturn Aura all to share basic engineering.

The Chevrolet Malibu poses a special problem for Chevrolet. Mid-size sedans are the critical bread and butter segment for all manufacturers. Pricing must start below $20,000 and a well-equipped vehicle should still sticker for under $25,000. If too much value is built into the car, then the Malibu will cut into Impala sales. The 2004 through 2007 Malibu took the conservative approach and missed the mark.

However, the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu is right on target. The new exterior design is outstanding with a raised beltline and chopped windows. From the front grill to the taillights the design just works. Replace the front grill with a dual kidney design and the design would pass for a BMW.

Inside, the design excellence continues. From the minimal wood outlined dual cockpit to the aluminum center stack this design is light years ahead of the 2007 Malibu. I would like to have seen a softer touch material used for the dash, but durability and cost issues may have trumped additional luxury touches. My test vehicle came with outstanding suede leather inserts in the heated seats and a thick leather wrapped steering wheel. The rear power package including an electrical plug for rear seat passengers and manual back glass shades is unusual option for mid sized sedan of this economy.

My vehicle was equipped with the optional 252 horsepower 3.6 DOHC V-6 Engine and 6-speed Transmission. Paddle shifters on the steering wheel of a Malibu? This was a great package, with exceptional quietness and comfort.

Chevrolet not only hit the target with the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, they became the target for all manufacturers. My $24,000 Malibu exceeded the value of many $30-40K vehicles. Kansas City GM workers can be proud that they make the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu. You'll be proud to own one.
