From this thread on the WAR General Board:

markjacobsea posted:
I'm glad you loved DAoC and while I don't agree that we "totally walked away from it [everything we learned from DAoC]", I've always said that we weren't trying to make DAoC 2. We did try to learn our lessons from DAoC just as we are continuing to learn from WAR and I hope that the SotG next week will be another indicator of how we are learning. One of the things that is different in this SotG is that what I tried to do in this one was to address the top 9/10 of the Community's complaints/worries/suggestions/etc. Now, everyone has their own top 10 list of course but I hope that this list really reflects the major concerns (I'm not addressing things like individual bugs or a particular career of course) of the Community. FYI, the SotG is more heavily focused on RvR than PvE. As I and the team always does, we gather a lot of feedback for our game. As I've always said about Mythic, we may not always agree with that feedback but we do always listen. I'll give you one example from the SotG and the Vault Community (as well as others who will see this message) can use it as a yardstick to judge if we are really paying attention and moving the game in the right direction. In the SotG one of the issues I talk about is one part of our Endgame, City Raiding/Sacking. One of the things that we believe the players have been asking for is to put more RvR (especially oRvR) into that part of our game. I'm happy to tell you that we agree with the players and that is indeed one of the things we are working on for the next patch cycle and beyond. This is the sort of stuff that will be in the next SotG from me.

In terms of Origins and DAoC, I'm sorry that both Mythic and I have been rather silent regarding the game for quite a while. While I haven't been involved in posting about the game in years, we have had a ton of discussions about the game and its future for quite a while now. Unfortunately, as you know we had layoffs at Mythic and that was one of the reasons we have been silent recently. I wasn't going to tell (or let anyone else tell the DAoC community) that Origins or anything else was coming once I even thought that a restructuring was going to happen within EA because then I would have been put into the position of knowingly lying to the community and I won't do that. We have shifted around some folks and our discussions about DAoC and it's future will continue. I will tell you something else though. When we looked into doing Origins we gathered player feedback about the idea and I was told that it wasn't overwhelmingly something the players supported or seemed to want. Nobody wants to see DAoC abandoned less than I do but right now we need to be rather careful and smart with our resources and make sure we do the right thing. If either current or former DAoC players want Origins, I'd love to see a real groundswell of demand to back that up.

Mark

So...there you have it. Basically, nothing that we didn't already know. Limited resources + uncertainty of demand = no Origins any time soon.

So basically if we want to see origins we need to start a mass feedback stating so, to show interests in the idea.

I'll say this though, I'd rather see mordred fixed before i welcome origins. But then again I really would enjoy OF again, so i'll be sending my feedback.

Wish they'd just take out the sea zones, lose the two border keep zones for each realm, and be done with it. As much as I'd love to see origins there isn't anything completely wrong with NF except for its size being a little overboard with the current population.

hmm yeah nothing really new but just some more info. I'd say it's like they are still trying to figure out what is happening going forward and have no answers, just very questionable idea's and guesses but will have to see.

For me, the only problem with not doing origins is that by doing nothing we ensure the end. I don't even care if origins comes out that much, but something significant needs to happen in order to draw more interest and excitement from not only the current players but also potential new and return ones.

Now, I don't even care if DAoC continues, but I will tell you that nothing about WAR or WoW or any others interests me any more...I tried but I can't find something better than daoc. Since I've returned I havn't found a second to breathe let alone be bored or tired of daoc in over a month and a half. In WoW and the like I spend half my time not logging in or running in circles or thinking about what class might help me enjoy the game more. So unless some sort of DAoC 2 or game as good comes out soon I'm pretty terrified to be honest of what is to come...and for that reason I hope it's Origins.

I hate replying to these Origins threads, because unfortunately I don't have any good feelings about what Mythic did here. And I've pretty much said what I can... but since Mark Jacobs brought it up, I guess one more reply won't kill me...

Here is how I feel... Mythic announced this and there was a freaking lot of excitement about Origins. Mythic them very selves acknowledged the excitement level. First Origins was going to be a simpler project that would of launched last September, but after just 2 or 3 weeks of constant player buzz Mythic decided to do something even more elaborate with the Origins project. There couldn't be more demand for this if you offered to pay us to play it.

In hindsight it seems unfortunate that players got too excited about this, maybe if we didn't let Mythic know how much we wanted this, then we'd have at least gotten the simpler version of Origins last year.

Players were resubscribing, wanting to get used to the game again in preparation for Origins. Then we waited. And waited. And waited. We heard almost nothing for 7 long months. That is a long time to get no updates and something the players were so interested in, so of course a lot of the excitement died off. People were assuming this was another thing that wasn't going to really happen. And when we finally did get a small update, it mostly sounded like Origins was dead.

Now Mark Jacobs is kinda telling the Origins fans that we gotta beg for this again? Unfortunately our morale has been shot and I think most of us went back to our other games. I think this is a few months too late.

I'm wounded and disappointed. It's going to take time for me to feel better about this. sad

Wow.

I feel that there was a groundswell for this. There was a lot of excitement.

To put this back onto the players, saying the ball basically is in our court, just...wow. sad

Maybe I'm misreading that? I hope so.

The only thing I can think of is that, initially, perhaps there was a lot more concern about Origins than we were shown. I heard nothing but excitement, but it is possible that there was a lot of negative feedback submitted to the Herald last summer when Origins was originally announced.

Regardless, it is what it is. Even without Origins, I'm still happy to have Lori and the new Knights program.

"groundswell of demand"

The demand kind of died after people realize that Mythic lied to them about releasing Origins.

Yeah...as far as I know, the ground was pretty goddamn swollen last summer. Then came WAR, then the layoffs, and here we are, being told that we need to be more vocal?

Bleh.

I've been a huge Mythic supporter and I ofcourse loved DAOC. Tried WAR hit 40 tried hard to love it but I finally realized damn its just boring I won't go into all the details but basically I just couldn't log in anymore and I didn't even care.

But you can really tell Mythic is owned by a big company now. Evertyime I check in for a WAR or DAOC update and read something from Mark its always a really vague of this is what I am going to talk about very soon in an upcoming announcement I have to make. Even when he tried to be specific in this statement it was just long way of saying "We know RVR is weak and we are looking into it." and then when the announcement comes its just as vague and generalized as his message about his upcoming message!

As for as DAOC I have played since release I have seen all the changes from its glory days to its low pop to its small rebounds and I never really thought that DAOC was close to having its plug yanked but after reading this It crossed my mind. Not tomorrow of course but it sounds like they are deciding if they want to or not.

On the bright side the way they operate today it will probably take them 6-7 or seven months to decide if they want to have a meeting on closing down DAOC. Then of course all the meetings and such afterwards to analyze if the decision is correct.

Also if Mark wants to really see the ground swell he only has to click these forums back to the time frame of when Origins was announced. This does not take a rocket scientist and Mark isn't dumb by any means. So it should let you know where DAOC stands in his list and fairly so lets be honest there is a ton of money riding on WAR. We love DAOC but it is older its not going to have a Mega rebound thats going to peak his interest because he is in a big money ballgame but the bad part is with all that cash WAR in my opinion is not even close to quality and the excitement of DAOC.

Yes. MJ is blowing smoke when he says “we gathered player feedback about the idea and I was told that it wasn't overwhelmingly something the players supported or seemed to want.”

Typical MJ, spin and less than half-truths. Often when Mythic changed things in a way that angered players they would post on the Herald that the change was due to feedback by testers on Pendragon . . . and the posts on the VN boards by the TLs and those doing the testing were, “WTF????” because often there was no feedback asking for the change. Mythic just liked putting the blame on the players. I am sure that Mythic would laugh and laugh when the boards would light up with hate posts directed by players at the stupid (fictitious) players that supposedly asked for the change.

It has little to do with EA. MJ has always talked out of his . . . .well lets just say that most of what he says is vague or half-truths. It has always been that way.

Even on the few occasions that MJ does say something rock solid, but later does something completely different, he explains things away in a vague way or puts the blame for the change on someone else.

Exactly.

Semi you make some great points and I have never been one of those "I hate SOE for NGE/RMT" guys "I will never give Funcom another cent because of how Anrarchy online" released. There are plenty of people that feel they have personally assualted somehow by some game company.

I probably was more forgiving of MJ back when I loved DAOC so much.

But really for the first time in too many years of MMO'ing. I actually felt my intelligence insulted. I guess because he actually can type that and expect people to believe any of it or if he really means it and he just needs a "ground swell" to make it happen but everyone here knows exactly where all the groundswell information that he ever could possible need is just a click or two away... but somehow he can't see it!

It really has told me all I need to know and all my future decisions with Mythic will be based on that. I would never say I would never play a Mythic product because I am not like that I don't carry a grudge(especially over a game). I doubt I could play WAR again though happy I just don't like it.

I will never rule out playing DAOC again my account is open now. I am however going to take a break and I wish everyone the best...yes you too MJ even though you are in my time out corner.
