Meth lab raids jump 42 percent in Summit

Authorities believe more users cooking drugs as imports dry up. Rise follows 3 years of declines

By Rick Armon
Beacon Journal staff writer

Summit County experienced a 42 percent spike last year in the number of methamphetamine labs raided.

Authorities attributed the increase — which followed three years of declines — to more local users making their own meth to replace a scarcity of the drug coming from Mexico.

Law-enforcement authorities dismantled 68 labs last year, compared with 48 in 2007, according to the new annual report from the Summit County Drug Unit.

The number of sites raided began to drop after authorities disrupted a major Mexican meth operation in 2005, and laws were enacted to make it more difficult to obtain meth ingredients at pharmacies and other stores, said Capt. Hylton Baker, head of the county Drug Unit.

But as the Mexican meth dried up, local users picked up the slack.

Baker, who also serves as president of the Ohio Task Force Commanders Association, said other task forces around the state also experienced an increase in meth labs.

Despite the discovery of more labs, drug researchers in Ohio are seeing a downturn in the availability of the drug and people seeking treatment for meth addiction.

''We're seeing an increase in law enforcement activity, which is uncovering more labs. But we are seeing declines in terms of users on the streets,'' said Dr. Robert Carlson, a professor at the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine and principal investigator for the Ohio Substance Abuse Monitoring Network, which tracks statewide drug trends.

Meth is a drug manufactured by cooking ingredients, including over-the-counter medications. The cooking process creates dangerous chemical residues that can seep into walls and carpeting.

Summit County has long been reputed to be the ''meth capital of Ohio.'' And last year, a Beacon Journal analysis of U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration data showed the county is one of the worst communities in the nation for known meth labs.

Last year, the county created a searchable online database for known meth labs. It is available at http://www.co.summit.oh.us/sheriff/Meth_Sites/Meth_Sites.asp.

Other highlights from the annual report include:

• The Drug Unit seized and purchased through undercover operations $4.4 million worth of illegal drugs. Eighty-eight people were arrested for drug-related charges.

• The Mexican nationals pushing meth are now dealing Mexican heroin.

''If McDonald's had to stop selling hamburgers, they're going to try to sell more chicken sandwiches,'' sheriff's Inspector Bill Holland said.

• Local cocaine prices have doubled to about $40,000 a kilo — a good sign for authorities.

When the supply is low, dealers charge more, Baker said.

• The Summit County task force received the Ohio Distinguished Law Enforcement Group Achievement Award from the state Attorney General's Office and the Ohio Narcotics Association of Regional Coordinating Officers Outstanding Unit award last year.

The task force is made up of authorities from the sheriff's office; Akron; University of Akron, Barberton; Copley Township; Reminderville; Springfield Township; Stow; the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the DEA and the FBI.

• Baker received the Ohio High Density Drug Trafficking Areas Task Force Commander award.

For all the money spent on the "war on drugs" over the years, it sure seems like there are still plenty of drugs to be had by all who want them. Maybe a different approach should be used. Then the police could concentrate on stopping all the violent thugs preying on people instead of busting some pot smokers or speed freaks!

25.2 Million White mothers do not receive food stamps.
3.1 Million Black mothers do not receive food stamps.
11% of the white women recieve assistance compared to 62% of the black women.
Not a good argument, based on the census you referenced.

I agree EHart- daddysgirl stats would only be close if the black/white population would be 50/50. I hate all criminals, but the black criminals are the ones that are making it scary for average citizens to go out. white meth heads are absolute scum, but they are not out shooting innocent people. I hope APD would shoot a meth head who was not listening to orders.Balcks do commit a disproportinate amount of violent crimes-these are stats-daddysgirl.

The government should give Crack and Meth away for free, and eventually, the problem would solve itself.

The scumbags of all races would readily kill themselves with the free drugs, and the crime rate would drop exponentially.

Hey Becky JP - if you think this isnt happening in Medina County then you are sorely mistaken... In fact, the large majority of Meth Labs are in rural-type areas. Summit County has a lot of resources dedicated to cleaning up the drug situation here. But i guess if you bury your head in the sand, the problem doesn't exist.

Meth is a terrible drug, it eats you up from the inside out after a while, (I used moderately from 99-01 in college, going to parties etc.) but it's because the 'buzz' or 'high' is second to none that people get addicted to it.

Without the FORESIGHT to know ahead of time to not let yourself get carried away with it, it'll get to you as it did many friends. It's still not as bad as cocaine though in my opinion, and that's mainly because with cocaine you have to take a lot more of it throughout the course of a night, and it constantly is attacking your central nervous system. Stay off both drugs though, it's a waste of time and money, and only in the end will create more problems, so I'm glad they keep busting these labs, it keeps the 'heads' looking elsewhere, out of OUR neighborhoods.

Posted 03:44 PM, 02/16/2009

Most meth cooks do it to feed their addiction while not "taking money from their family." Does it make it right...NO WAY! However when puting these idiots in prison why not give them rehab while they are there. Our tax money pays for these jerks to have a roof over their head and food in their mouths and they get out and do the same thing all over again. Look at Tommy Farson he just got out Aug.'08 and is arrested for the same thing all over again.Maybe rehab in prison should be looked into.

Ed, I'm glad you're off the meth, man. That junk is worse for you than anything else out there.......addicts become addicted NOT because the high is soooo good, but because of the way the chemicals in it work on your brain, causing your body to need more and more of it everyday. A person using meth constantly won't last very long, while a regular user of cocaine can go on for years.

I'm not sure why you're comparing the two, since one will eat your body away while the other one doesn't, and one is made entirely of man-made chemicals in a near-lethal process while the other comes from a plant. Dude, neither one is good for you, but if you wanna die the drug addict death the meth will do that for you much faster than cocaine will!!!

Kudos to you for straightening out your life, and good luck on staying clean.

White people NEVER COMMIT CRIMES they are only learning and shaping experiences so that we can live in harmony and understand our confused ethnic brothers and sisters. How can we better understand the drug culture? Hang around a crack house on East Ave with the brothers and sisters and watch them grow and prosper on any given Friday or Sat night. Observe a drive by shooting on Arlington street and you've witnessed our public education system at it's best and speaking of public education, with all of the perverts and drunks teaching these minorities, how could we expect any different outcomes from the hood? Here is the difference. A white man commits a crime and everyone says "lock him up". As they should. A black man commits a crime and the white community says "lock him up" and the black community says "he's innocent and being racially persecuted". That is the inherent problem. A white kid gets out of line and a cop cracks him in the mouth with a nightstick and everyone one figures he was an idiot that deserved it. Same thing happens with a black man and suddenly the black community is screaming police brutality. A white criminal makes a false move and is shot by police. Its a non-story with most assuming he was in the wrong. A black man does the same thing and is shot by the police and suddenly Al Sharpton is on an airplane. The white community dislikes and wants to see all criminals punished in some manner. The black community wants black criminals treated with kid gloves if not left alone. That is the divide.

Yes, Meth labs are predominantly crimes operated by whites and when discovered all manner of punishment should be enforced and if during the raid one of the perps fails to comply with commands of an officer.....shoot him dead.

Yes, most serial killers are white and when we identify one we should confine or kill them immediately.

Yes, white collar crime is predominantly white it should be prosecuted to the full extent and punishment should be stiff.

I think most of my white brothers and sisters will agree with me on the above comments.

Now lets hear someone from the black community explain. Gang violence, crack houses, drug dealing, sexual assault, car jacking, and armed robbery all predominantly black crimes.

Please explain to us why you never fail to defend your black criminals whenever they are involved in these crimes.

To respond to "Reality"
As someone of color and formerly in law enforcement there is no such thing as a predominantly black or white crime. Sexual assaults, robberies, gang violence, etc. happen too much across the board. Meth may have started as a "white" drug but you better believe that it will eventually spread to black neighborhoods, just like crack has spread to white areas. It may comfort you to believe that "black crimes" don't happen in your neighborhood, but sadly, they do. You did make an interesting point, though, about the black community not wanting to hold offenders accountable. I agree that often we don't hold them as accountable as we should. But somehow I don't think it would matter to people who have the "us versus them" mentality whether black offenders were being held accountable by their community or not. At the end of the day people like you and daddys little girl will always look for a reason to believe you are different and a little better than those who don't look like you.

Lovinglife- I know I sometimes blur the line but my problem is not with the black race. There are many aspects of black culture that I embrace and truly give thanks for. I think the biggest threat to the black race is hip-hop culture. It weighs the community down like a boat anchor around your necks. And I get very frustrated when I see GOOD hard working people from the community blindly stand by and defend these idiots just because they share the same skin color.

You do not seem to want the system society has in place correct the problem. Nor will your community do it on it's own.

So what is the solution.

There will always be differences but I would like to see them be positive ones that we share with one another and mutually benefit from.
