10,000 Civil servants stage lunchtime protest

Over 10,000 civil servants have taken part in a lunchtime protest against the public service pension levy and the deferral of pay rises due this year.

The one-hour demonstration, organised by the Civil and Public Service Union, caused some disruption to Government services.

Betty Tyrell-Collard, a spokesperson for the CPSU, says many staff realised the significance of the pension levy this week when they saw the reduction in their pay packets.

The CPSU, which has around 13,000 members, says the last action it took was successful and they are confident of public support.

It says the protest is setting down a marker that staff are not happy with the levy, which they say is a pay levy and not a pensions levy.

Ms Tyrell-Collard said the CPSU strike committee will meet next week to discuss the way forward.

She added that the Government would have to invite unions back and discuss some moves to reduce the levy ahead of the ICTU national day of action on 30 March.

Meanwhile, employers have warned that workers who take part in a national one-day strike may not be paid.
