Title: Of Polar Bears (1/8)
Author: [info]30toseoul
Pairing: McKay/Sheppard
Rating: PG (NC-17 overall)
Notes: I had a silly ficlet attack at the festival this weekend. More to follow.

.

Sheppard touches the device for two-thirds of a second when it hits, when Rodney staggers away from the lab bench and his hands fly to his ears trying to block out the sound, and he knows it isn't just him because Zelenka and Parrish are reeling back too. It isn't painful, not exactly, it's just

(too much too soon)

like standing near the stage at a concert when you haven't gotten used to the sound level yet, and what a stupid analogy when Rodney hasn't been near a live show in at least three years. He doesn't know what made him think that it's

(like the robbie williams show in auckland)

and hello, what? He's never seen anything in Auckland that didn't involve the walk between the airport terminals and the McDonald's in the domestic one, and who the hell is Robbie Williams? What the

(should've known he wouldn't bother with leave, too many pretty toys on the ice)

and it's stronger but it still isn't painful, not quite. It isn't nearly as loud as before, but it's a lot more focused. He has a flash of a wide amphitheatre with flags waving above the crowd, and the smell of pot and trampled grass and sunscreen and sweat, and then it's gone.

Rodney can see Radek scrambling through the doorway and faintly hears him yelling for the medical team, but he's already slumped halfway to the floor, leaning against the wall, his hands skating along the cool surface as he goes down, and they just better not say that he fainted again. He can only take so much of that.

(how do I know that he... oh. that's what this thing does)

He shouldn't feel Sheppard at his shoulder before he realizes that Sheppard's in his mind. That's wrong. Rodney knows that Sheppard is holding his arm and easing him down carefully, making sure he doesn't hit his head or fall awkwardly on the hard floor. He'll have to be grateful about that, later.

The rest of him feels like Sheppard is plastered against every molecule of his body, breathing near his ear, sucking out everything on the top levels of his thoughts. Rodney has about ten seconds to regret every time he's made fun of psych majors over the years, because they were right. You can't not think of a blue-eyed polar bear.

He has about two seconds to watch Sheppard's eyes go wide with shock before everything grays out.

Well, thank goodness. What a place to stop! This was a great start though - I'll definitely be watching for more.

"Blue-eyed polar bear"??? Little confused on that one. Otherwise, it's a great story and you're evil ^_-

It's a psychological trick that says you can't not think about something. If you're trying not to think about it, you're thinking about not thinking about it, so it's still in your mind (i.e., if they tell you not to think about a blue-eyed polar bear, no matter how hard you try not to think about it, you'll still be thinking about it). Does that make sense. I think the point here is that Rodney's trying not to think about all the ways he wants to screw John through the mattress, which means he is thinking about it, which means John is hearing him. [info]30toseoul, correct me if I'm wrong.

Oh, that makes so much more sense. I *knew* I should have scanned the comments before continuing to read, because I was really confused when Rodney thought John had seen all his fantasies. I was like "when did that happen? Durr..."

Anyway. Great fic. See comment posted after the latest installment. That is all.

I really enjoyed this, and I'm hoping to see more soon! :)

but he's already slumped halfway to the floor, leaning against the wall, his hands skating along the cool surface as he goes down <--This sentence, for some reason, was super vivid in my mind.

Rodney knows that Sheppard is holding his arm and easing him down carefully, making sure he doesn't hit his head or fall awkwardly on the hard floor. He'll have to be grateful about that, later. <-- And that last line just seems so Rodney to me :)

polar bears

Interesting start! I'm intrigued.

I did want to say something about calling it a drabble, though. To me, a drabble is a complete story in exactly 100 words, so there are times when I skip them if I'm not in the mood for something short. This is more of a ficlet, or whatever, but it's not a drabble so you might be unintentionally losing readers without realizing it.

Also I noticed your fic for the last [info]sga_flashfic challenge seems to be gone. Did you delete it? The link doesn't lead anywhere. You might want to let the admins know if that's the case. I've been enjoying the writing of yours I've come across - welcome to the fandom.

Re: polar bears

Ah, thank you for the clarification! This is my first real dive in fandom so I never paid attention to the meaning of those terms before. *g* I'll switch the terms so people are more clear about these. I appreciate the flashfic notice too; yeah, that piece got deleted, I didn't know they organized things so quickly.

Thanks again, especially for saying you like what I've written so far! *beams*

Well, I noticed because I was going back to read it! *g* Was there a reason you deleted it?

Also, I don't think I left you feedback before, but I did want to say I enjoyed your piece focused on Antarctica. I remember reading you'd been stationed there. It's always interesting to get an insider's view. I do hope you'll keep putting your fic up somewhere accessible. The more people who have the opportunity to read it, the more your connections on LJ will grow.

Re: polar bears

Was there a reason you deleted it?

Yeah, I wrote something about Atlantis after the hurricane that pretty blatantly wasn't about Atlantis at all--I live in New Orleans and I've been having some serious depression over the last month. I was kind of messed up when I wrote the piece, and the fact that I'd posted it felt disrespectful the next day, so I deleted it.

I'm so glad you liked my Antarctica piece! It felt good to write and made me miss the Ice a lot. I totally intend to keep posting SGA fic, it's a great release right now and this fandom is SO ADDICTIVE! I don't like to post it directly in my LJ (I try to keep that for people who read me about New Orleans and other RL stuff) which is why I've been using communities and the sga_noticeboard; thank god for them! And thanks again, it's great to 'meet' you. *g*

Re: polar bears

I meant to respond to this earlier - thanks for explaining about the icon. I should have known because I did know you were from New Orleans. I can't imagine the devastation - I mean, I live in the middle of the Canadian prairies. We're pretty much protected from most natural disasters here - no earthquakes, hurricanes, and things like tornados or flooding are rare.

I can understand why you deleted the story, but it's also true that we write out of our personal experience, so I hope you've kept the fic somewhere, at least for yourself.

Great story

I loved this story. Usually miscommunication stories bug me, I'm like all talk to each other already, but this one was GREAT! Poor Rodney. Poor John. So glad they figured it out. LOL.
