Open Microphone Object in Flash Player

Created: 03/20/09 03:59 PM   Updated: Tuesday 04:04 AM
Component/s: Sound Microphone
Security Level: Public (All JIRA Users )

 Description  « Hide
Open up the microphone object in ActionScript to allow access to the raw bytes coming in from the device's (computer) microphone access through Flash Player. This would enable features like sound/stream capture, sound manipulation, stereo activity, advanced activity detection and possibly tune/equalizer modification and display.

The availability of this feature would usher in a new wave of media recording functionality for Flash, benefiting creative firms, developers, musicians, telecom industry users and many more.

This is something that many have my clients have been asking for years about. I think it would be an excellent addition to the Flash Platform!

This would be an amazing feature that could really bring new life to the Flash Player, opening tons of possibilities for new applications and such. The instant it's available, I'd be adding voice filter options to my Ribbit service and Quick Capture feature of my application. Not only that, but being able to record the microphone without a streaming server is a giant step in the right direction.

I agree with the previous posters that such an addition would open up a whole new range of types of web applications, and would be incredibly useful for music tools/education, gaming, and using sound itself as a control interface. Since both the microphone object and the computeSpectrum() method already exist in AS3, it would seem a small amount of work to link the two ... in relation to the huge amount of benefit developers would receive.

I really would love to see this feature realized in future versions of FP.
