Bison Move To EPL
Planet Ice the owners of the Basingstoke Bison ice hockey team have agreed that from the start of next season and subject to a successful application to the League Management Committee, that the Bison will compete in the English Premier Ice Hockey League where they will renew local rivalries with teams such as Bracknell Bees, Guildford Flames and Slough Jets.
John Neville, Director of Group Operations for Planet Ice said, "We would like to thank the loyal fans for their continued support of the Herd during what has been a very difficult period for the organisation and hope that they understand the decision we have had to make and trust that they will continue to support the Bison next season as we enter into a new era for the Herd".
"It is no secret that for the last couple of seasons the Bison have struggled to compete on a level playing field within the Elite League and have lost substantial amounts of money".
Eamon Convery, Chairman of the Elite League commented, "Basingstoke Bison were one of the founding teams of the Elite League. They worked tirelessly over the years to turn around the performance of the team both on and off the ice. Progress was made however it is also accepted that their future lies outside membership of the Elite Ice Hockey League. We wish them every success in competing with their local rivals in the EPL and thank their fans for their faithful support of the Herd".
John Neville continued, "We would like to wish the Elite league all the best for the future and in particular thank both Eamon Convery and Andy French for the support that they have given the Bison over the past seasons but the time is right for the club to move to the EPL. Neville continued," We are currently talking to parties who have shown an interest in running the team and are also talking to interested coaches and players with a view to next season".
It is intended that at the commencement of the season, there will be an initial pre season game celebrating 20 years of Basingstoke hockey.
