Group Posts E-Mail Hacked From Palin Account -- Update
Vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin's private Yahoo e-mail account was hacked, and some of its contents posted on the internet Wednesday.
The internet griefers known as Anonymous took credit for the intrusion, and screenshots of e-mail messages and photos belonging to the Alaska governor have been published by WikiLeaks. Threat Level has confirmed the authenticity of at least one of the e-mails.
"This is a shocking invasion of the Governor's privacy and a violation of law," Rick Davis, McCain-Palin campaign manager said in a statement. "The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these e-mails will destroy them. We will have no further comment."
FBI spokesman Brian Hale said, "The FBI is aware of the alleged hacking incident involving Alaska Governor Sarah Palin and is coordinating with the United States Secret Service on the matter."

Photo: Associated Press/Al Grillo
The cache of stolen data contains five screenshots from Palin's account, including the text of an e-mail exchange with Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell about his campaign for Congress.
Another screenshot shows Palin's inbox and a third shows the text of an e-mail from Amy McCorkell, whom Palin appointed to the Governor's Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in 2007.
The e-mail, a message of support to Palin, tells her not to let negative press get to her and asks Palin to pray for McCorkell, who writes that "I need strength to 1. keep employment, 2. not have to choose."
McCorkell, reached at her office, confirmed that she did send the e-mail to Palin. McCorkell later called and said the FBI has been in touch with her about this investigation.
A fourth screenshot shows an e-mail sent to Ivy Frye, a Palin aide, from someone claiming to belong to the group Anonymous advising that the person has changed the password to Palin's Yahoo account to prevent other members of Anonymous from accessing it again. The e-mail includes the new password.
The data posted by WikiLeaks also includes a list of Palin's e-mail contacts and two photos of her children.
Palin has come under fire for using private e-mail accounts to conduct state business. Critics allege that she uses the account to get around public records laws, as the Bush administration has also been charged with doing.
An index of the e-mails in her inbox, which includes sender, subject line and date sent, indicates that Palin received numerous e-mails from her aides in the governor's office, some of which could be work-related.
An e-mail from her press secretary, Meghan Stapleton, indicates the message is about the "Motor Fuel Tax Suspension".
The subject line of an e-mail from Randall Ruaro, her deputy chief of staff reads, "Draft letter to Governor Schwarzenegger." Another one from Ruaro says, "Please approve" and another one is about "Court of Appeals Nominations."
Other e-mails from Ruaro indicate they're about employee and budget issues for the DPS. DPS is how Alaska refers to its Department of Public Safety.
Palin's chief of staff, Michael Nizich, sent her an e-mail August 22 with the subject line, "Using Royalty Oil to Lower the Cost of Fuel for Alaskans." The subject line of another e-mail from Nizich reads "CONFIDENTIAL Ethics Matter."
E-mails from the governor's scheduler, Janice Mason, indicate that they're about Palin's schedule for the week of August 10.
WikiLeaks said in a press release sent to reporters that Anonymous gained access to Palin's e-mail account around midnight Tuesday.
(Updated with reactions from the McCain campaign and the FBI, as well as new information about e-mails that indicate Palin used the account for official government work.)

Bad reporting.. it's right there in the Summary at the Wiki Site.

This is a criminal act. Wikileaks is not playing crusader to the rescue, as with the bank scandal, or even by a stretch, their leaks of other governement documents. This is simply support of illegal hacking, plain and simple. Where is the story here that Wiki Leaks is helping expose? NONE.
The journalistic merit is non existent. This is political, purely.
Perhaps it will take the hacking of the Wikileaks staff personal accounts to really get the message across. I am not encouraging this, but it certainly would make the point wouldn't it?
This is disgusting, and vile, and beyond the pale.

@Kim Zetter
This might end up being the most epic of lulz for all time!
NYT, page 4 of the article.
"While Ms. Palin took office promising a more open government, her administration has battled to keep information secret. Her inner circle discussed the benefit of using private e-mail addresses. An assistant told her it appeared that such e-mail messages sent to a private address on a “personal device” like a BlackBerry “would be confidential and not subject to subpoena.”

Anonymous is not a group of hackers - it's a leaderless collective of like-minded individuals, from all walks of life. It continues to 'take on' the 'Church' of Scientology.

Sarah Palin is connected to Scientology. Here's how:
She has been, and still continues to be, deeply involved with the ultra-right-wing "Dominionist" church movement. READ THIS:
http://markcrispinmiller.blogspot.com/2008/09/sarah-palin-and-cnp.html
The main nexus for the Dominionists is the "Committee on National Policy", which strangely includes non-Christian organizations such as, yes, The Church of Scientology.
The leading "Dominionist" church is MorningStar ministries, which despite being a Christian church, leans heavily on "supernatural" themes and blatantly uses the Scientology Cross in their logo:

@Kim Zetter: Please remove false posts from people who are highjacking other's established handles. Thanks.
@Philo: YOU IDIOT. I COULD CARE LESS ABOUT YOU SCIENTOLOGY CRUSADE. I personally, am not a fan of scientology in the least, and do consider it a form of cult, in my opinion. I'm just not for the idiotic and mindless attempt to justify illegal hacking of other's personal accounts, including VP-candidate Palin. I would be just as loud even if it were Biden, for God's sake. So spare me your assumptions, and un-informed BS. Screw you, and all anonymous hackers.

Actually, Philo of Alexandria is not an idiot. Smart man, that one.
You seriously lost moral high ground here by the "non-encouraged" suggestion of retaliatory action (illegal hacking not-withstanding). That people 'percieve' you to be a member of the CoS is to be expected - you follow their modus operandi. So expect to be forum bashed. Law of the net, deal or get out.
Also. yours truly is not a Anon member. Spare me your assumptions. At least I gave your handle wiggle room with a parenthetical.

It isn't nonsense really. The anon folks are getting their lulz from you anyway. You are too easilly goaded (being sanctimonious does that). All they and I had to do was wait for your clearly irritated response. Consider it a public service that I am even giving you this lesson.
You should give up on your handle for this thread ... its not like you have any rights to it anyway.

Why would the anti-Scientology campaign benefit by associating itself with a criminal act (and stealing and publishing Palin's email qualifies)? It has so little to do with Scientology that I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Scientology-allied people are the real culprits, and that they seek to discredit "Anonymous" by blaming them.

Philopoemen, thanks for stealing my handle. Good one.
Anyway. Do Sarah Palin and her staffers really think that resetting passwords and "deleting" the email account will prevent a gov. issued subpeona from getting at the email data anyway?
2 things. I wouldn't be surprised if someone from 4chan IMAPed the account contents to a separate server.
As the erudite readers of Wired would know, its hard to really delete something. I wouldn't be surprised if said data is still lurking on Yahoo servers (or the ghost of the data anyway).

Seeing as you probably don't get the best vantage point on issues when your head is THAT FAR up your anus, it's hardly surprising to see that you're talking shit in this forum.
Also: Wired is not your personal army. Do something useful: off yourself and donate the organs. Someone out there needs a doorstop and your brain is apparently fit-to-purpose.

@strong woman.
True she is strong, accomplished, and attractive, but it is questionable how well she represents the values of this country, past or present.
Liberals are not scared of her strength, they are scared of the harm she could potentially do with it if backed up with enough power. To many, she isn't a breath of fresh air, she is the stink of the past trying to dismantle what has been accomplished, esp for women. She comes from that wave of feminism that saw a power vacuum and filled it with themselves... just as much an oppressor as the males they were trying to break away from.

If some group had hacked into Obama's personal e-mail account, there'd be so much ranting, raving, and gnashing of teeth by the Obama’s entire herd of sheep followers that one would think the world ended.
.
Additionally, it is amazing that there are two types of responders to this article:
Intelligent people like the real Philopoemen and myself and maybe one or two others.
Then there is the rest - the uneducated, illiterate, potty mouth, trash.
.
Ever notice that when liberals finally realize that they are full of it they resort to foul language?

These e-mails, albeit stolen, may reveal that. And that's got you conservatives scared. And of course the cyber-terrorists at Anonymous belong in jail. I'm sure the hackers will be investigated. After all, you play the game and take your chances.
However, there are other issues to investigate:
Did Palin instruct her staff to use personal email for government business to shield activities from possible subpeona? She claimed no, but it sure looks like it, doesn't it? (If it smells like a moose, and walks like a moose....)
What's the deal with the McCain campaign interfering with a state investigation?
How stupid is it to have a public email account when you are so high profile? No one during that extensive "vetting" process warner her about this?

My fellow Wired readers. I've been noticing for a while now that a good friend of ours, going by the name Philopoemen, desperately is calling for help. In times of crises, this sort of citizen is the most affected one. That's I'm calling everyone for help. Let's start a donation campaign to buy Mr. Poemen a jetski or a cruise vacation to the Caribbean. IMHO, it's the only way we can save this brilliant mind from the dirty basements of fasci-right-wing forum trolling. Oh, this and a Hollywoodian movie demonstrating how ***-up the world would be if all Philo's ideas were respected and turned out to become real 'facts', as he claims they will be.
.s.
On a more serious note, I'm always impressed by your good writing skills and your, ermm, availability of time to comment on every slightly pro-liberal Wired article. I'm even more impressed though, that you can't have a single idea without showing up your darkest, egotistic, failed GOP agenda arse-kissing tendencies. Even when you do compliment Obama's good deeds you do it in a way that ends up making McCain look nicer. Oh my gosh, world is so tired of people like you.

Ok for everyone saying she was hiding shit in this email. Bull fuckign shit. I have seen all the screen shots and read all the text related. The group who did it has members criticizing each other for how much effort they put into hacking the email, and how nothing was even there. So everyone sitting there with the notion she is hiding shit on a private email (oh noes, over 90% of America has a private email) you can die now.
Posted by: Anonymous | Sep 17, 2008 3:06:29 PM
I must agree with Anonymous. Everything said was from Democratic supporters who are looking for something to latch onto. With no proof, basis, or even a suggestion of any kind, they are saying she is hiding incriminating evidence in the email. The email has been hack, I viewed the leaks on wikileaks, nothing incriminating. Talking with a guy running for congressman and he is crying about someone trying to make him look bad, then random conversations with other people. Once again the ball has returned to our court democrats, now let us pursue something that is not trivial and actually has some basis. I am tired of negative remarks springing forth from nothing.

Some of these responses are BS. I don't care if they found anything. Palin used a private e-mail account to conduct state business for the express purpose of avoiding a court subpoena.
I am so f'n sick of an executive branch that thinks it has the right to keep anything it desires secret. Government transparency is a good thing.
To recap: I am glad they found nothing and I am also glad that they looked. Her secrecy was over the line.

John McCain's campaign said Wednesday it has contacted "appropriate authorities" over a report that Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin's personal e-mail had been hacked.
"This is a shocking invasion of the Governor's privacy and a violation of law," campaign manager Rick Davis said in a statement. "The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these emails will destroy them. We will have no further comment."
The statement came hours after a user on the Web site WikiLeaks said he had gained access to Palin's Yahoo e-mail account and gained access. Screenshots of the e-mail messages and photos of the Alaska governor's family were published on that Web site and later on gossip Web site gawker.com.
FBI Spokesman Eric Gonzalez in Anchorage, Alaska confirms to CNN an investigation is underway.
"We are aware of the allegations and we are coordinating with Secret Service as far as the allegation that someone has hacked into Governor Palin's personal e-mail account," he said. "We are going to be working a joint investigation with Secret Service on this."

Even if it is legal for her touse public commercial email accounts for government use its certainly not ethical. They dont have those public records laws for entertainment purposes. ITs to make sure that goernment is open to be measured by the citizens.
If they are so certain that their way is superior why dont they want it seen by anyone Why te need for secrecy and lies? They should be able to defend their government policies.
One thing that was admirable about communists feom russia is that they were almost all perfectly capabale of debating why their system was better. I disagreed with them, but they had their arguments.

So... whatever happened to the guys that blew the cover of Valerie Plame? So... whatever happened to those emails that the white house deleted?
Posted by: so... | Sep 17, 2008 5:38:47 PM
My dear Vice President,
It is both with sadness and delight that I hear that Governor Palin's email has been hacked. While it is unfortunate to see that her privacy has been violated, I am thrilled to see how this has worked out in our favor nonetheless.
First, we can finally declare Palin's selection as a McCain's running mate to be a stunning success. The people who incessantly flame about Palin's incompetence are just playing into the hands of our party, for which she’s the perfect decoy. We Republicans should be only too happy to make her the focus of this election as opposed to the economy, health insurance, energy policy, education, the war and our loss of respect throughout the world — for which we never intend to offer any viable solutions.
Second, we have clearly compromised the principles of the left at a time when they are claiming we have no principles. It is unfortunate that hackers have learned the very techniques you pioneered - and used the Blackberry that McCain invented - to penetrate Governor Palin's email account. We must not allow others to employ the techniques that our party has so carefully perfected over the years since Watergate!
Third, the hacking of Palin's email account has led her to cancel the account, thereby destroying evidence that could have possibly been used against her in the Troopergate investigation. Isn't that a fine rub!
It is a compliment to you to see others on our side applying your methods of subversion and deception. I saw in the Seattle Times that Governor Palin and others in her office have used private email accounts to avoid the Freedom of Information Act and similar sunshine mechanisms. Planting that story in the Times no doubt inspired the hackers to perform their foolish break-in.
You will be proud to learn that my pupils have used the very techniques you taught us to recapture the data that these hackers stole - even after it was removed from the hackers' wiki site! I've attached their snapshots of Palin's emails just to show you what we found. Here is a synopsis:
(1) This screenshot of Palin's inbox shows several e-mails from Ivy Frye, Palin's assistant.
(2) The inbox also contained an e-mail from Amy McCorkell, whom Palin had appointed to the Governor's Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. McCorkell says that she is praying for Palin and encourages her not to be negatively affected by extensive press scrutiny.
(3) One e-mail is apparently a response to Sean Parnell, Alaska's Lieutenant Governor. Palin expresses frustration at radio personality Dan Fagan's representation of Parnell. Palin calls Fagan "inconsistent and purposefully misleading."
(4) A final screenshot shows an anonymous e-mail sent to Frye, acknowledging that an internet group called "anonymous" performed the e-mail hack. The e-mailer denies having involvement with the hack, specifically.
My pupils also uncovered a photograph (5) confirming that the Palins are, indeed, devils. Note the direction of tongue and the eyes in the attached photograph of one of the Governor's children and grandchild.
So it seems that Governor Palin's minor misbehaviours have once again been put on display to the public at large, so as to distract them from the fact that there is utterly no merit to our party's platform.
I have to hand it to you, Dick, you are brilliant!
Your affectionate confidant,
SCREWTAPE

Didn't Karl Rove get enough puppet time with Bush? Look, if we vote this pair into office we deserve what we get. Or should I you deserve what you get. I may be 60 but it is never too late to become a citizen of a sane country. This country went down the drain the Bush--vote for McCain and we--you--are finished.
Posted by: Maggy | Sep 17, 2008 5:49:12 PM
I'm a Republican, and I don't even know what JQPublic is talking about. Any governemnt and/or state employee that utilizes a personal computer to conduct work at home without a CAC card reader is taking a risk, and as such is subject to hackers. Commor sense should have been for the Govenor to abide by established procedures. It was public knowledge she was using her personal email to conduct work, she should have been settled this incident in her life, false/true prior to accepting the nomination and McCain should have vetted her out properly

You are so low! You celebrate breaking into private email accounts? Very sad.

No akutya1, I do not condone hackers, however her being a victim of not following set procedures doesn't mean I have to pity her. Palin is an adult, and knows the system, she choose not to follow the regulations.
Posted by: Alexander | Sep 17, 2008 5:53:41 PM
ok so they hacked her email. But what did they actually prove? That she was busy on her yahoo, and just took an answer on that one? And that is a crime? OMG. In case you guys didn't know it, it has been a forever fact that politicains get a few perks. Thats why we all call on them to pull strings.
So basically they found nothing and are making a mountian out of mole hill. Well if you think that is so bad maybe you should vote for the towel head. Who has been born and breed to change!!! to fit in and destroy american people. have you forgoten 911. he can try to pretend he is black american. But he is not. He is muslum. And who do you think controls the oil compainies. You think it is bad now just wait. personaly you put Mcain and palin in the white house, and its going to be a large cat fight. They will have to either agree or compromise. Since everything is decided by the senate and congrass, and they are mostly democrates. shaking things up may be to our advantage.

Anonymous wasn't behind the Palin email hack and many of us know that by now. But it wasn't ebaumsworld or some lucky hacker(s) either! It was leaked by the McCain campaign, as part of a conspiracy to start another media firestorm!
Think with me for a minute here: the whole reason Palin was nominated was to start a media frenzy that would give the McCain campaign plenty of media coverage. Her popularity would nullify any attempt to discuss the "issues", and the McCain campaign is using it to run a popularity contest.
Suddenly, there are corporations on Wall Street that are tanking left and right. The media stop talking about Palin and start talking about the "issues" again. But then all the sudden, some hacker discovers Palin's email account? And now the front page of CNN.com isn't about the economy or AIG, but instead about Palin again?!
This is just a little too convenient for the McCain campaign! Yeah sure, they're getting the FBI and the Secret Service to investigate, but what are the odds that the Bush administration will send their lackeys to take over the investigation and lay all the blame on /b/? They'll use this as an opportunity to regulate the internet, because they will say /b/tards are picking on their Alaskan MILF candidate!
Don't let the McCain campaign get away with this! Spread the word!

Unfortunately, since the /b/tard who did this posted the info on 4chan, Yahoo! locked the account because too many people tried to sign in.
Now any information that could have been had that was at all damning is out of our reach.
The only thing now that could prove that Palin was illegally using a private email address for government business to bypass any oversight is a subpoena delivered to Yahoo!, which most definitely backs up emails for a certain amount of time.

There are two dangers here.
.
First, Wired by reporting this trash as if it meant something just lowered their journalistic credibility. They are now below the National Enquirer, or even the New York Times.
Second, Wikileaks just showed that it is simply an arm of the Democratic party, biased and dishonest, and has no real interest in freedom.
It might be different if there was something politically hot here. This is all just personal stuff. This story ranks right up there with home invasion. Wired should be ashamed. Most of the posters here are too immature to be ashamed, but they should be too.
Wikileaks is now just a hangout for criminals. Sorry, that's just how it is. I'll never believe them again.
If Obama is smart, he will waste no time condemning this childish and unnecessarily disrespectful vandalism. If he doesn't (or even if he does) he's probably the next target of these dishonest people.
What, you Democrat liars don't think there are Republican liars out there too?

Gotta love those crazy Dem-Libs. I bet they didn't realize that if there was any evidence in these e-mails that could've been used against Sarah Palin is now moot because they have been obtained illegally. Maybe the Republicans did it, but I doubt it. This was a stupid move but I'm sure these young men will have 5 to 7 to think about it while they're living in Federal prison.

Sorry boys, but there's a new order on the horizon. We (I am a proud member of the liberal/leftist/commie pinko whatever your flavor-of-the-month term is) have been on the short end of the stick for 8 long and miserable years under the current administration. Thankfully the rest of the nation is starting to wake up from their tired malaise and seeing the Bushies for what they really are. What began in 2006 when you sorry lot were bounced out of power in Congress is less than 2 months away from happening again. Get ready!
As for hacking Caribou Barbie's yahoo account, that was just the opening salvo, and a preview of how things are gonna be. Palin wanted to hide her dirty laundry and avoid the archived, available-on-request e-mail system of her state government. The so-called ethical governor decided to setup a private e-mail account to skirt the law. Now we see one of the unintended consequences of doing government business on public mail servers; they are easily hacked.
So yes, I fully support the hacking of her account. It has come time to shine a spotlight on some of the dark, nasty corners of conservatism.
Wake up, boys. :)

Not only is there a hefty fine and penalty of up to twenty years in prison for hacking, but there are penalties for stalking, putting personal information about one on the internet (HR3402) and.....state wiretap laws
exposure to litigation for violation of privacy and other damages....as well as deportation.....

ok... unless someone from Gawker is the one who actively hacked into and posted her email - which is not the case - Gawker has barely even touched a moral gray area in this situation. Additionally, the email account that was hacked was being used in a shady way, to correspond with other government officials, and has now been deleted, destroying government records, which are major offenses (see: watergate, though I get that the comparison may seem ludicrous), and this woman is RUNNING FOR VICE PRESIDENT. Therefore, if the evidence is out there, it's relevant. It's not private if she's breaking government rules as a political candidate. Stop being so offended and make some prank calls to a pregnant teen! everybody!

Someone really should go to jail for leaking Valerie Plame's identity over forged intelligence for political purposes. But then I guess The Decider would wave his magic wand and make it all go away. Let's not pretend that you care about the rule of law or even anyone's privacy, you just think you can pin this on the other team in the group wankfest you call politics.

While Anonymous may not have done the hacking itself, it will not be so easy for them to get off the hook. They will have to produce logs of the transactions that posted the hacked info. If they refuse or cannot produce those logs they will be in trouble. If your service is used to do something illegal you can't say "I didn't do it".
Someone is going to jail for this.

Ok, let's first set this set. How would you feel if your account was hacked and published.
The Patriot act is only used against those suspecting of hitting us. Will it take an attack like what happened in Yemen to understand they are trying to hit us again.
The problem here, there are lots of older americans and WOMEN who you guys just freaked! If she can get hacked.... Not to mention, Yahoo will be having thousands of cancelations. Maybe it was a Google employee.
All I can say is, thanks. The more your hate bleeds the more you will too. People love the underdog..that's what makes us Americans!

Instead of being obsessed with wrecking Palin, you savants should realize that this is going to scare the crap out of all politicians, no matter what party. That is going to lead massive bipartisan internet legislation which is going to fuck us, one and all.
You people never goddamn learn. Go look at McCain's record regarding internet/web regualtion, and you'd realize he was one of the few stopping the telecoms from their massive power grabs. WTF do you think he's going to do now? And Obama - that clown believes in a new Fairness Doctrine - which is going to include the net.
So I hope you twats can hear my golf clap. Way to go. Way to obsess over one person and guarantee a whole new level of web regulation. Fuckin bravo.
I hope Wired has the brainpower to wake up and realize that this act is the place to denote the end of the free internet. Remember this moment, you self-absorbed douchebags. It's going to take about a year, but the curtain is going to come down and the one guy running who would have stood against new net laws has just been given the ultimate reason not to. Mazeltov!

Hacking the probable future VP's email probably wasn't such a smart move.
Meanwhile, Palin will probably gain even more support as a result of this latest dirty trick.

I think the hack was great, personally. In a long list of lost accountability in the government, one person steps up to the batting table and evens the odds.
While it is not 100% clear what the e-mails contain, it is perfectly clear that she used this e-mail account to conduct official business related to the government.
Our government, our votes, our taxpayer dollars.
This is not a private organization, this is not a private entity. She is a public official, doing public business.
It should be open to scrutiny.
I hope they sue and get access to the rest of the e-mails and then post everything else up to the internet.
Posted by: Mark | Sep 17, 2008 9:06:26 PM
If the email providers cannot guarantee privacy, perhaps it's time that people who want privacy change how they communicate. If these businesses don't fix this weakness in their system, AND shitcan the criminals who do things like this, they'll end-up out of business. Maybe we need goon squads to hunt them down and break their anatomical interfaces with their computers.

Where the public's right to know might be exercised?

getting off the issue people, yes her rights were violated, yes her privacy was violated, but all this came about because of the media and of an incident that could have been resolved prior to her nomination.
Bottom line, if she had followed procedures, if she had used her CAC card reader, odds are we wouldn't have been discussing this.
All this because of a personal issue incident while in office. an incident Palin initially told her people she welcomed an investigation, saying "hold me accountable," but she has increasingly opposed it since Republican presidential candidate John McCain tapped her as his vice presidential running mate.

So is this the same Anonymous trying to tackle scientology? Whatever the posts say, the article does not make it clear. If so it only fuels my, and mainstream America's, suspicion of the group even though most would agree Scientology is evil. This act was either done by the group, in which case they have other secret agendas besides scientology. If it was some rogue member it shows they have no control over the chaos they support. Either is dangerous and unseemly. Get it together folks and you'll garner more respect from the people.

Who gives a darn?? The government has the right to read our email, listen to our phone conversations and watch us where ever we go. Why is her email so protected? If she is doing government business on a private email then she is as corrupt as everyone else in Washington. It's called transparency and if we are to make an educated decision about who we want to be a heartbeat away from the presidency then Paylin should be no different than the average Joe. If Sarah Palin wasn't such an autocrat that she had to subvert the will of the people by funneling her mail through private channels, and didn't try to get her brother-in-law fired, then the 13-year olds at 4chan never would have read about her Yahoo accounts in the news and wouldn't have used Yahoo's password recovery mechanism to subvert Yahoo's standard login procedure. Nevermind that using cleartext passwords and webmail over the Internet is anything but private, and is doubly stupid when a disgruntled employee at a company you're leaving potentially-embarrassing information in the care of could distribute your information when suddenly you're selected as a VP candidate.
However all of that is mostly irrelevant. Depending on how thorough the original party was in his use of an anonymizing proxy, if anyone is held responsible for this it probably won't be him. Nevermind that more resources will probably be wasted pursuing this, because it entails a famous perosn, then are spent on individuals that are victims of identity theft, have their privacy invaded by malware, and so on.

Something smells funny at Yahoo.
Any thought about opening a Yahoo email account now?

If you travel, it is best to use a HTTPS connection which means it is a secured channel, especially when you log in over unsecured networks.
Don't you morons know anything? If you do online banking...you check for HTTPS in the URL. If you logon to your email server over an unsecure network it damn well be an HTTPS connection unless you don't value your privacy.
If not, any first year IT student can use a network analyzer to read your username and password in CLEAR TEXT...which means CLEAR TEXT...it's this simple.
If you don't use HTTPS, you are begging for trouble, stupid, or don't care enough about your private information being read by the public.
As for YaHoo, read my previous post which states YaHoo is not for public officials, especially if the account is named GOV.PALIN@YAHOO.COM.
This has the hallmark of being very improper and a serious disregard of governmental regulations which EXPLICITLY state against use of such practices.

Even though they are rarely prosecuted, these are serious crimes and the violators should go to federal prison. It is not merely a violation of privacy, as news reports bizarrely describe, it is an incredible breach of security which has endangered a US governor and her family by exposing private information about her that was stolen during the commission of multiple felony crimes. God help Obama's campaign if this is somehow trailed back to there; it is a more offensive crime than Watergate, to be honest.
Not only should the criminals who broke into Palin's account, stole, and published her personal information be prosecuted, also the websites which chose to post this information. It is such a serious breach of security against an important member of the US government and her family, the publishing of this stolen data is akin to treason, and I am sure there are some laws that will apply here. For example, there are probably statutes in Alaska protecting the governor's personal security, just as there are laws to proted the US President. Hopefully Gawker et all will also get to find out what federal prison is like.... karma is a female dog.

"@John

Either you can't read, or you chose not to. Which is it?
Wired is quoting both subject lines and actual parts of e-mails, above.
"It appears that you are no more knowledgable than John McCain or Sarah Palin on issues of technology and online security."
Based on what???
The fact that I can read?
Based on your argument, above, you can't logically put together an argument, much less a DNS server.
"I hope you are not about to tell me that the Internet is a series of tubes."
I've been on the net for about 20 years now. My first experience with 'hacking' was when someone couldn't get past their password on a PC. I think that was about 1988?
No, we didn't use tubes back then. But the 'security' program was written in basic, and I figured out how to get past it.
I don't have a lot of experience with network security, but I never had to since by best friend is a net guru.
Now that we've both flopped our Johnsons out... what does any of this have to do with the fact that Wired is reprinting e-mail info that was private on their website?
Posted by: John | Sep 18, 2008 1:39:45 AM
Hmmm, This sounds like a fixed chess match and we are the naive spectators.
First you use a pawn to make an faux attack (the hacker) and clear the important pieces (the former critical e-mails), at this point you expose your queen (Palin) with a check move on the King (Obama, e-mails deemed clear and clean [by the hacker of course]), hoping he will make a hasty move to defend himself or attack the new exposure (the queen, Palin). While at the same time the spectators (us) consider the poor queen whose been exposed and attacked and blame it on the other team and/or the danger of the competition (hacking, freedom of speech, etc...) so that we don't see the real deception of a cover-up of the intentional purpose in the game. Distortion through distraction. Check. It's your turn Obama... the Press... us the people...
If you think those accounts weren't cleaned long ago, you must think that the republican party are as dumb as foxes. Don't fall into the hole. What happened to Levi's original myspace, weapon's of mass destruction in Iraq, McCain's first wife, the oil companies record profits, etc... Someone should call Ghostbusters for all these sightings that are being reported, (straight out of a Hollyweird movie).

Two wrongs don't make a right; they make two wrongs. Yes, Palin's private email account seems to have been hacked, and this should be investigated. On the other hand, Palin seems to have been using this private email account for government business, and this should also be investigated.
Neither anonymous nor Palin belongs a heartbeat away from the Oval Office.

Let's make sure I have this right
She's for the bridge - than against - BUT SHE KEEPS THE MONEY
She is trying to kill the investigation claiming it's nothing but politics - YET - it was a 14 to zip vote by both Dems and Repubs SUGGESTING THE INVESTIGATION GO THROUGH
she is using PRIVATE email accounts to conduct Government business which is AGAINST THE LAW
Sad part is - not a one of the candidates have a clue as to how to fix the economy and all of them are worming their way out of previously held convictions (or lack of) in an effort to gather votes What a bunch of pathetic choices we have this year. I'm voting 3rd Party

I am glad I don't have many more years left. Reading some of these posts just shows the future is lost in the youth of today. You are all a bunch of 'Sheeple' being herded around feeding on any BS you are given and thinking it is the best crap there is to eat.
All the hackers have done is to invite the government to take even more control over the internet; to invade your personal space even more; to take even more of your freedoms away.
By the time you all grow up and face reality it will be too late. You will not be able to go to the bathroom without some goon in the government knowing about it.
Best of luck to you all, it was a good life while it lasted.

These comments make me want to hurl.
If a rape victim is Republican do you think she was asking for it?
How much can you hate her? If this is the mentality you have to have to support Obama then I no longer want to be in that club.
This is nuts. I never thought I would vote for a Republican or McCain but there is no way I am going to be connected to this crowd of hate mongers.

The fundamental issue here is security. Whether Palin should or should not have been using Yahoo is another discussion. Why was Palin's password compromised is what's really important.
I work for an online password manager and we are constantly trying to diffuse the idea of password security. Unfortunately, it usually takes a case like this for people to realize the importance of using strong passwords and storing them safely.
The internet is only as safe as we make it. Let's make it safe.

Why don't all these sicko's leave Ms. Palin woman alone? Now she isn't allowed to have a Yahoo account? How many other elected officials have several e-mail accounts? While not a public official, I myself have 4 - one in particular is easier to access when I am traveling. Clearly, despite an unparalled effort to dig up dirt on her, this woman is clean as a whistle. If nothing else using a Yahoo account shows that she is thrifty!

The point of this story is missing the main issue, a Federal crime of Penetration of a Computer system (Felony). Hacking is a high crime on the books, no dancing around with it. Yahoo was breached, so where was the security monitoring at Yahoo? Inside job? Can we expect a hack of the "One" email account? or his Wife?
Where is the FBI cyber crime & SS High Tech task force -- come on guys and gals, get off you butts and start tracking....

I can't wait to find out who did this and why the Associated Press is hindering the investigation by not allowing the Feds to see who posted Palin's emails on the web. CALL THE ASSOCIATED PRESS AND COMPLAIN!! The Dems want to talk about privacy invasion and then try to hinder the investigation. Most of the press is working with/for the Democrats. The Associated Press is well-known for the left-wing bias. Just use any search engine to find them and find their local office. I just called and I don't think they know what is coming.

1: If this was anyone else, the FBI would not give a shit
2: Using Yahoo mail for official business is both dumb and ILLEGAL.
3: Unless I am mistaken, the US constitution as something about the people being gardien of the gouvernment. You know, guns and all? The goal was to keep abusive gouvs afraid of the people. This is a new form of this. If I was them and the FBI found me and I was taken to court, that's how I would defend myself. They exposed her ILLEGAL actions.

Dear Right Wing Wackjobs,
When you, as a public official, use private email to conduct official business in hopes of circumventing the law are you not inviting disaster?
While this is a case of highly unethical hacking, this is more importantly a case of State Governor Sarah Palin using a private email account, in direct violation of THE LAW to shield herself from future litigation on sensitive subjects.
This of course follows in the same footprints set by the damned Bush Administration.
If this had happened to Obama, you neocon crazies would be having a goddamn field day tearing into every morsel of information looking for links to terrorists, Bin Laden, mobsters, baby-eaters, satanists, etc, etc.
You reap what you sow, and Sarah Palin and the GOP are learning that fact the hard way in the 21st century.

i agree pete. i don't like either candidate, but obama is far and away the better choice. mccain has been running a campaign on experience and then chooses palin. it is ridiculous. the thought of her being president is scary. and she kept all the tax money on the bridge to nowhere and just spent it elsewhere. and as everyone now knows, she was for it, and then was against it. the problem was she was against it after it was seen as a failure. hind-sight is always 20/20.
it's multi-billion dollar companies we are bailing out. unfortunately, due to deregulation, which mccain is all about, these companies have obviously over extended themselves. if we let them all go under then all of america suffers worse then it is already suffering. the larger companies had to be saved. though, it never should have gotten to this point in the first place.

What they fail to note, however, is that she was using this yahoo account o conduct government business. The Michelle Malkin-led "OMG they h4x her e-mailz and posted her kid pics!" is just that, spin.
Requests have been made for e-mail correspondence between the governor and her aides, requires that are allowed under the law as government e-mail systems are archived for just this purpose, to leave a trail. The ethically-challenged governor found a way to skirt this by setting up and using a non-government e-mail account. Well guess what kiddies, those ain't so secure.

Tarc,,,,, after reading this you should have NO TIME TO MAKE NEGATIVE COMMENTS ABOUT REPUBLICANS! LOOKS LIKE YOU WILL BE BUSY DEFENDING NOBAMA!
Cari, Rezko, and Auchi. These three names should be raised at every one of Barack Obama’s campaign stops.
When Joe Biden first ran for president in 1988, Joseph Cari Jr. was his Midwest field director. 1 Since then, Cari served as finance chairman for the Democratic National Committee and chairman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. 2
Over the years, Cari donated thousands of dollars to Biden’s campaigns, and when Biden started his most recent run in the Democratic presidential primary, Cari planned a Chicago fundraiser for him. 3
On the day of the fundraiser, July 25, 2005, Cari was named in a federal corruption probe of the Illinois Teachers Retirement System. Biden told the press: “All I know is Joe Cari is a friend, and he’s an honorable guy, but I don’t know anything beyond that.” 4
In September, 2005, Cari agreed to plead guilty to one count of attempted extortion, and to testify against Antoin Rezko. Cari admitted he was part of an $850,000 kickback in Rezko’s political “fundraising operation.” 5
The Syrian-born Rezko owned 11 low-income housing projects in Obama’s Illinois State Senate district. 7 Because of the testimony of Cari and others, Rezko was convicted of 16 felony corruption charges.8
Biden has acknowledged knowing Rezko for the past 30 years, reports the Washington Times.9
Obama has known Rezko since at least his Harvard Law School days when Rezko offered him a job, which he declined, 11 but the law firm Obama did go to work for, and Obama himself, represented Rezko’s company, Rezmar Corp., says the Chicago Sun-Times. 12
Rezko had worked on Obama’s 2004 U.S. Senate race 13 and specifically on Obama’s campaign finance committee, says the Sun-Times. 14
When Obama announced his U.S. Senate run, Rezko held a “lavish fundraiser June 27, 2003, at his Wilmette mansion,” says the Sun-Times. 15 The direct contributions from Rezko’s family, employees, and associates totaled $150,000. 16 Obama told the Chicago Tribune that altogether Rezko raised $250,000 for him — not including his run for the presidency. 17
At least one of Rezko’s $10,000 campaign contribution’s to Obama came directly from a $250,000 kickback, the London TimesOnLine reported. 18
In June 2005, Obama and Rezko’s wife, Rita Rezko, bought adjoining real estate parcels. Obama admits he toured the mansion with Tony Rezko before he bought it, says the Wall Street Journal. 19
Obama paid $1.65 million for the residence, and Rezko’s wife (who testified she earned only $35,000 per year) paid $625,000 for the vacant lot next door. Obama’s purchase price was $300,000 under the asking price; Rezko’s wife paid full price. 20
The month before the Obama-Rezko purchase, the Chicago NBC affiliate had already aired the story that Rezko was the subject of a grand jury corruption investigation 21, which may account for The New York Times report that, “Mr. Obama has since called the transactions ‘boneheaded.’” 22
The Sun-Times also reported that in 2005, after Rezko paid a $1.5 million bribe to the Iraqi Electricity Minister, his company was awarded a $50 million contract to train security officers at Iraqi power stations. 23
At Rezko’s trial, the government’s star witness, Stuart Levine, testified that Barack and Michelle Obama attended a party in April 2004 at Rezko’s home to honor the London-based Iraqi billionaire, Nadhmi Auchi. 24
Auchi had just been convicted in 2003 of corruption in France, and given a $3 million fine and a 15-month suspended sentence. A Pentagon inspector general report in 2004 cited “significant and credible evidence” of his involvement in weapons smuggling for Saddam Hussein and the Iraqi Oil for Food scandal. Auchi denies those charges. 25
The Wall Street Journal reports that three weeks before Obama and Rita Rezko bought their adjoining properties, Nadhmi Auchi loaned Tony Rezko, who was broke at the time, $3.5 million dollars. 26
Cari, Rezko, and Auchi. Those three names should determine the fate of Obama’s campaign.

1 “Biden Has Deep Ties to Rezko Accomplice JOSEPH CARI: 30-year Friend of VP Pick Guilty in Kickback Scheme
Meet Khalid Abdullah Tariq al-Mansour, characterized as a well-known lawyer within the black community, as well as a devout Muslim, renowned preacher, author, black nationalist and extremely vocal opponent of Israel. He is also known to be an adviser to Saudi billionaires Abdul Aziz, Khalid al-Ibrahim and Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, the latter being the 19th richest man on the planet according to Forbes magazine and principal in charge of Kingdom Holdings, on the board of which al-Mansour sits.
Curiously enough, al-Mansour is more than just an adviser to the occasional Saudi prince. He has been described as a mentor to the radicals who founded the Black Panther movement, as well as perhaps the most outspoken and revered spokesperson for black activism in America. His numerous literary works include "The Lost Books of Africa Rediscovered" which, in 1995, floated accusations reminiscent of those bellowed by Obama's famed spiritual mentor Rev. Jeremiah Wright that the United States was actively plotting genocide against black Americans.
Barack Obama's association with al-Mansour came to light in a relatively recent television interview with Percy Sutton, civil rights activist and former borough president of Manhattan, on a New York-area news program ( click HERE to see video). Sutton had been contacted about Obama by al-Mansour, an adviser to one of the wealthiest men in the world who, he said, was working as "a friend who was raising money for him" and hoped that Sutton's influence in the northeast could help Obama gain admittance into Harvard Law School.
We all know about Barack Obama's associations with shady characters during the years after he emerged from law school as a known commodity, as a former editor of the most influential legal journal in the nation. What I'd like to know is why he was being bankrolled by Khalid al-Mansour before he even went to Harvard Law.
Now, there may be nothing to this. It may simply be that al-Mansour saw the talent and potential in Barack Obama and decided to work on his behalf to cultivate it. However, given Obama's other friends and acquaintances from the same formative years in his life, I cannot help but wonder what kind of expectations would fall upon his shoulders should he reach the Oval Office. He has already shown a penchant for hunting down business deals and grants for the likes of corrupt Syrian businessman Tony Rezko and radical Chicago priest Fr. Michael Pfleger. What favors are left to be returned, and to whom?
Perhaps, as John McCain took a rigid bow amidst balloons and confetti this evening, his impeccable character on display for the world to see, we should take this time to look back and review some of the highlights surrounding the people who have supported, bankrolled, mentored and befriended Barack Obama during arguably the most ideologically formative years of his life.
Obama's questionable friends
Barack Obama's judgment is taking center stage again.
Just weeks after the Jeremiah Wright controversy, Obama is now faced with defending his ties to admitted terrorist William Ayres, who once plotted to blow up government buildings and even years later said his group didn't regret setting bombs and "hadn't done enough." John McCain rightly questioned Obama's judgment on the issue today on ABC's This Week:
“He became friends with him and spent time with him while the guy was unrepentant over his activities as a member of a terrorist organization, the Weathermen,” McCain said. “Does he condemn them? Would he condemn someone who says they're unrepentant and wished that they had bombed more?” (The Politico)
Chicago Tribune editor Steve Chapman adds:
[Obama's] comfortable association with an unrepentant former terrorist should induce queasiness in anyone who shares the humane values that Obama extols. ... You can tell a lot about someone from his choice of friends. What this friendship reveals is that when it comes to practicing sound moral hygiene, Obama has work to do and no interest in doing it.
Obama's also taking heat for his ties to longtime friend Tony Rezko, who's currently on trial in Chicago facing corruption charges. Washington Post columnist David Ignatius writes:
When asked by the Tribune why he didn't break off the relationship, Obama said Rezko "gave me assurances that he was not doing anything wrong" and "my instinct was to believe him." Given the range of information that was available at that time about Rezko's activities, it must be said that Obama was loyal to a fault.

I'm sorry, but what knucklehead of a public figure would have such an obvious email account as gov.palin@yahoo.com? You would have THOUGHT that someone on the McCain campaign would have made sure this was secured (or eliminated) was she was chosen as McCain's running mate? Duh! Apparently Sen. Obama's comment about Sen. McCain not being able to use a computer applies to his staff also.

Hacking her email is wrong and someone should go to jail for a long time.
The AP has refused to cooperate with the FBI's investigation into the illegal hacking. The AP should suffer some penalty for its obstruction of justice. Think of it this way. The AP is in possession of stolen property. They can either cooperate with the investigation or be prosecuted themselves.

dmc...come on. obviously i am not saying obama has alot of experience. the problem is when you have a campaign built on experience and then choose possibly the most inexperienced vp candidate ever, you become a hypocrit. everything you stand for is washed away. mccain has said you need to be ready to lead as president on day one if you are vp. he then chooses palin. he was desperate. this is a clear case of putting your country second and political ambitions first.
again, i am not saying obama is experienced. i don't even like obama. i think he is better then mccain but he is still weak. i still can't believe he voted in favor of the telecom companies.
the point is, mccain now is the empty shell. not obama. mccain has prided himself on experience and chooses palin. it is going to bite him in the end. he is the epitome of hypocrisy.

to GTSP678...last time i checked gramm at one time was mccain's chief economic adivsor.
Gramm's aggressive efforts when he was chairman of the Senate Banking Committee to deregulate the banking and financial services industry. That culminated in passage in 1999 of a sweeping financial services law that tore down the Depression-era Glass-Steagall wall separating regulated commercial banks from largely unregulated investment banks. And little regulation was put in to replace it.
then again, we are just a bunch of whiners.

Fannie Mae in 2005:
Fannie Mae's regulator reported that the company's quarterly reports of profit growth over the past few years were "illusions deliberately and systematically created" by the company's senior management, which resulted in a $10.6 billion accounting scandal.
The Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight's report goes on to say that Fannie Mae employees deliberately and intentionally manipulated financial reports to hit earnings targets in order to trigger bonuses for senior executives. In the case of Franklin Raines, Fannie Mae's former chief executive officer, OFHEO's report shows that over half of Mr. Raines' compensation for the 6 years through 2003 was directly tied to meeting earnings targets. The report of financial misconduct at Fannie Mae echoes the deeply troubling $5 billion profit restatement at Freddie Mac.
The OFHEO report also states that Fannie Mae used its political power to lobby democrats in Congress in an effort to interfere with the regulator's examination of the company's accounting problems.
I (John McCain) join as a cosponsor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole.

to gtsp67..and if mccain is our savior and forsaw this all and is not to blame for the problems going on today please explain this. now he is against the deregulation problem? just like palin and the bridge to nowhere...hind-sight is 20/20
In 2002, McCain introduced a bill to deregulate the broadband Internet market, warning that "the potential for government interference with market forces is not limited to federal regulation." Three years earlier, McCain had joined with other Republicans to push through landmark legislation sponsored by then-Sen. Phil Gramm (Tex.), who is now an economic adviser to his campaign. The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act aimed to make the country's financial institutions competitive by removing the Depression-era walls between banking, investment and insurance companies.
That bill allowed AIG to participate in the gold rush of a rapidly expanding global banking and investment market. But the legislation also helped pave the way for companies such as AIG and Lehman Brothers to become behemoths laden with bad loans and investments.

Democrats Oppose Oil Drilling While Millions of Ordinary Americans Suffer and Disaster Looms
China is drilling for oil off the coast of Florida in cooperation with the Cubans. Gas prices are soaring and the United States isn't conducting offshore drilling of its own.
As the price of oil continues to climb, other countries are increasing their off shore oil explorations. Canada, Cuba, Brazil, Australia and Russia have all jumped on the offshore exploration bandwagon, but the United States has not followed suit.
Will the oil be GONE when the dems change their minds?

"This is a shocking invasion of the Governor's privacy and a violation of law". Yeah, it's only OK when it's the government invading your privacy. It's ok for Bush to listen to your phone calls, read your emails, etc, but when it happens to them then it's a violation of privacy. Apparently, the FBI is on the case to find who did this. Well, why don't you go arrest Bush then, he did the same thing in violation of the law for years to far more people...

They violate the 1st Amendment by opening mail, caging demonstrators and banning books like "America Deceived" from Amazon, Wikipedia and Facebook.
They violate the 2nd Amendment by confiscating guns during Katrina.
They violate the 4th Amendment by conducting warrant-less wiretaps.
They violate the 5th and 6th Amendment by suspending habeas corpus.
They violate the 8th Amendment by torturing at Gitmo.
They violate the entire Constitution by starting illegal wars without declaration.
Impeach them all (both parties) and save this great country.

This is serious, of course, in that Palin is going to be VP of the republic. Such little weenies as those that steal people's mail or listen in on phone calls will always be with us, however. I wish they had come up with something a little more exciting, like a nude shot or other such items of that sort. These twits wasted all that energy (they must not have much juice for anything worthy) for boring banter.

Your not fooling anyone, your not a republican.
Sarah Palin will and should smash some balls, and shit down their throats of those who where involved in the hack. Oh wait that would also include Obama himself and his gangster Chicago style thugs and cronies!!!
Obama will loose because he is to caught up in Chicago style politics, that should tell you something right there! But all Liberals will overlook that. Screw you Barrack Hussein Obama!

Is this starting to feel a bit like Watergate? Is G. Gordon Liddy still in business? If it comes out that the "Anonymous" folks who hacked into Gov. Palin's email (as well as that of her husband)and published the highlights are linked in any way to Sen. Ombama, big trouble for Obama & Co.

Let me get this straight, you ok to kill unborn babies, that have no choice but to die. But your saying that those that turn 18 to serve in the military have no choice either! Give me a break, those that go to the military choose to do so, those babies that die in the womb dont have a single choice in the matter!
What a stupid analogy!!

You can no more blame this on Anonymous than you can blame it on atheists or white people. Anonymous are simply that wide and that size of a group. Just as many support shutting up and letting the world get on with its own business.
Whilst I dont condone the act, that email account wasnt 'hacked'. First of all, the email address in question was a YAHOO email account, yahoo being notorious for having next to no security measures, and secondly all the 'hacker' did was guess her security question, to retrieve her password, which she set as her zip code. That is the internet equivilent of leaving your house-key under your welcome mat and then being all shocked when you get burgled, or leaving your car-keys in the ignition and walking away, then being shocked when someone steals your car. Whilst the act was obviously underhanded, if it wasnt this person, it would be someone else. If you pay no attention to security, it will happen.
Anonymous as a group has nothing to do with this, but they were simply the first to laugh at it, as the supposed 'hacker' showed off trophy screenshots there first. You will also realise that the email account was shut down very fast. Didn't it occur to anyone that it was an anonymous member who reported it as overtaken?
But lets not allow facts get in the way of setting up a scapegoat, shall we?

It is really funny to see Republicans concerned about personal privacy all of a sudden.
Posted by: ttlchip | Sep 18, 2008 10:45:21 AM
i really like this article:
THE MORE I LISTEN TO AND READ ABOUT “the most liberal member of the U.S. Senate,” the more I like him. Barack Obama strikes a chord with me like no political figure since Ronald Reagan. To explain why, I need to explain why I am a conservative and what it means to me.
In 1964, at the age of 16, I organized the Dallas County Youth for Goldwater. My senior thesis at the University of Texas was on the conservative intellectual revival in America. Twenty years later, I was invited by William F. Buckley Jr. to join the board of National Review. I later became its publisher.
Conservatism to me is less a political philosophy than a stance, a recognition of the fallibility of man and of man’s institutions. Conservatives respect the past not for its antiquity but because it represents, as G.K. Chesterton said, the democracy of the dead; it gives the benefit of the doubt to customs and laws tried and tested in the crucible of time. Conservatives are skeptical of abstract theories and utopian schemes, doubtful that government is wiser than its citizens, and always ready to test any political program against actual results.
Liberalism always seemed to me to be a system of “oughts.” We ought to do this or that because it’s the right thing to do, regardless of whether it works or not. It is a doctrine based on intentions, not results, on feeling good rather than doing good.
But today it is so-called conservatives who are cemented to political programs when they clearly don’t work. The Bush tax cuts—a solution for which there was no real problem and which he refused to end even when the nation went to war—led to huge deficit spending and a $3 trillion growth in the federal debt. Facing this, John McCain pumps his “conservative” credentials by proposing even bigger tax cuts. Meanwhile, a movement that once fought for limited government has presided over the greatest growth of government in our history. That is not conservatism; it is profligacy using conservatism as a mask.
Today it is conservatives, not liberals, who talk with alarming bellicosity about making the world “safe for democracy.” It is John McCain who says America’s job is to “defeat evil,” a theological expansion of the nation’s mission that would make George Washington cough out his wooden teeth.
This kind of conservatism, which is not conservative at all, has produced financial mismanagement, the waste of human lives, the loss of moral authority, and the wreckage of our economy that McCain now threatens to make worse.
Barack Obama is not my ideal candidate for president. (In fact, I made the maximum donation to John McCain during the primaries, when there was still hope he might come to his senses.) But I now see that Obama is almost the ideal candidate for this moment in American history. I disagree with him on many issues. But those don’t matter as much as what Obama offers, which is a deeply conservative view of the world. Nobody can read Obama’s books (which, it is worth noting, he wrote himself) or listen to him speak without realizing that this is a thoughtful, pragmatic, and prudent man. It gives me comfort just to think that after eight years of George W. Bush we will have a president who has actually read the Federalist Papers.
Most important, Obama will be a realist. I doubt he will taunt Russia, as McCain has, at the very moment when our national interest requires it as an ally. The crucial distinction in my mind is that, unlike John McCain, I am convinced he will not impulsively take us into another war unless American national interests are directly threatened.
“Every great cause,” Eric Hoffer wrote, “begins as a movement, becomes a business, and eventually degenerates into a racket.” As a cause, conservatism may be dead. But as a stance, as a way of making judgments in a complex and difficult world, I believe it is very much alive in the instincts and predispositions of a liberal named Barack Obama.

i hope this to be the case. as bad as us liberals get, you typically won't hear nearly as much as that sort of hate talk from us as you do from a small group of conservatives. why is that? education? social class? the fact that the bulk of conservatives are found in the south? just curious. i know it's not most of you. but it sure seems like it's alot of you.

Sarah Palin used the "personal" email account to conduct fraudent and illegal activities as governor of Alaska. When one lobbyest tried to contact her through her "official" email account, he was referred to that email address. Furthermore, her aides, everyone around her, used personal email accounts in precisiely the same manner. Recent evidence is of them deleting emails wholesale. I'd say this points up two things - first, Palin has no personal email account, that email address is a record in a wholew series of criminal investigations. Likewise, so are those accounts used by her staff, friends, anyone connected with her. Two, the more we learn about Sarah Palin the more we realize that she is nothing more than a small time crook. She and her staff's being allowed to delete email from those accounts, to do anything with the evifdence they contain, amount to aiding and abetting an obstruction of justice. WHoever broke into her acount did a public good. Now, I hope they do the same to her aides, everyone connected with her, who has one of these sort of email accounts.

Why has Obama rejected this mother and the grandparents that raised him by identifying himself as black? He is in actuality a mulatto. It seems to me he is perpetuating the bigotry of identifying anyone with Negro ancestry as black. It seems to me if he were really trying to make a change he would reject the bigotry of his church and those that continue to perpetuate race as a problem. The mixed portion of our society is growing as a result of acceptance of one another however; this is not the signal being given to the children of mixed couples by Obama and his ilk.

I know of two liberal state governors who have personal email connections in side of their offices. The reason behind it is the voter can not FOIL the email account.
Now how do you determine what is state business or not? The fact that a political figure may talk political strategy or communicate with another politician is not in and of itself illegal.
If it is, you can throw every state Governor in jail.

Mike said: "Sarah Palin used the "personal" email account to conduct fraudent and illegal activities as governor of Alaska."
Making an accusation that someone committed a crime without proof is a crime numbskull. Either put up your proof or shut up and go to jail. Considering that 1 out of 8 people in our country work in government, there are MILLIONS of government workers that have PERASONAL email accounts. Just because they have a personal account does not mean a crime was committed. In fact, it would be inappropriate for a goverment worker to use their official email for personal business; its called misappropriation of government funds. Following your logic, then no goverment worker can have a personal account and if they do someone WITHOUT probable cause, much less a court order has the right to access it without consent. Secondly, organizations that receive emails could and should be prosecuted at the state level for receiving stolen property. Finally, if this was a terrorist that had his emails hacked, you would liberls would be screaming from the rooftops that there was no warrant and his PRIVACY rights were violated.

scat...that is no fact. you want to say obama is no good because he stuck with wright for 20 years...that is a valid arguement.
to suggest he just hid his faith for those 20 years and has actually always been a muslim and his conversion to christianity was all a front...well i guess i just don't understand how you call that a fact.
also, when you use obama's middle name you are attacking him. it is used for the sole purpose of trying to create fear. trying to say he is different. i have never once hear mccain's middle name used. i wonder why that is.
finally, the fact that you are defending someone that calls obama a half-breed means you are no better then he is. of course, i am guessing you are a "pure" breed so that does automatically make you better then obama.

Funny you should mention this. A few years back, someone posted a study that showed that an overwhelming majority of people who have abortions are liberals and that if you took those numbers times the 50 million abortions that have occurred, there have been that many less babies born in liberal households. The numbers show that if it were not for abortions, no Republican presidents, except for Reagan, would have been elected since Jimmy Carter. Do the math, kill your babies and your population shrinks with time. Have more babies, your population grows with time. If liberals are aborting 3 times more babies than conservatives, guess which will eventually become extinct?

Throughout the entire primaries and the general election, the Obama campaign has played dirty politics. In addition to the never ending vitriol of the Obama bloggers on the internet, nearly every time I have posted a supportive blog for Hillary Clinton ... and, then for McCain/Palin ... my computer's mailbox has been inundated with hundreds of pieces of email spam. Another example of under handed behavior by Obama's henchmen, is that they have been organized to approach retirement homes, as volunteer community speakers ... only to visit multiple times spewing lop sided pro-Obama, and negative McCain propaganda to elderly people, to get their votes in November. And, now we can see unprincipled politicians and bias media hacks using the race card ... telling people " if you don't vote for Obama, you must be a racist". Usually, when Americans uncover such despicable tactics, they can count on the mainstream media to expose it to the public ... however, in this case, most of the mainstream media is in the tank for Obama ... so, they either look the other way, or they make phony biased excuses to mischaracterize, and cover up what's really happening.

People like that who do these things ought to be prosecuted and if it's up to me, shot! All the outcry about individual rights and privacy and these people will be the first to make a stink about it, but not when they are doing it to others. This should constitute a crime punishable with heavy penalties and all involved should then be prosecuted according to each count and crime type designated punishable by law. Anyone who has had this happened would delete even the most innocuous material since it's all published to the public. Can you imagine your phone number and email address being made public, not to mention your daughter's phone number and what else? That is not only a security breech but endangerment to her daughter and the entire family. Kooks out there will use it to serve their nefarious purposes. These sickos don't see anything wrong with this kind of actions, with their own twisted justification for their acts. If it happens to them, they will become unglued and be crying to hell. Facing public scrutiny does not include invasion one's right and privacy in one's life, which in this case also constitute felony.

Its my understanding that hacking an email account is a felony, as well as an invasion of privacy. They are a result of a crime. Considering all the backpedaling Palin and the McCain camp have done thusfar, and the attempts to block Troopergate, I don't understand why a Ceaste and Desist letter has not been sent to the sites publishing these emails or some other sort of legal action hasn't been taken. My guess would be that this story is serving a purpose for Palin/McCain, taking the heat off their blunders and being used to portray Palin of some sort of left-wing victimization once again. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Palin or the McCain camp were behind this. It's curious that this happened as Palin's popularity started to take a nosedive. I hate to be cynical about this, but it truly doesn't make sense.

I am a strict "privacy fetishist" as an earlier poster put it; however, I applaud the use of simple investigative techniques to show people how little their privacy is protected. To all you bullshitters who believe the "if you've done nothing wrong you have nothing to hide" argument, I urge you to reread the constitution.
The price you pay for being a politician or anyone else famous, is a lack of privacy. People are going to be all over your shit, and unless you are careful, you are going to get owned (Paris Hilton and her cells anyone?). You know what I put for my security questions? Random text. and the answer? A different set of random text. Problem solved (at least partially). A note to /b/ users: learn to use Tor, noobs.

Once you get the email address you can by mistake type the password in.

@Ubber Baby: Again, stop being a baby.
I didn't say they couldn't sell your e-mail address. I said they couldn't get the actual contents (your "e-mails" if you will), or password.
Saying that they could "guess" your password, is all well and good, but that depends how strong the email password is. Second, they would never do that, as I didn't give the company permission, and they could still be found liable for having possession of e-mails illegally, even if they did have the password. Which they don't. Sigh.

While there's no law per se against a private citizen gathering evidence, people do things everyday for which they might be held to account. Not that Governor Palin is among them. I’d expect to find nothing incriminating. Citizens do have rights though, the right to be secure in their papers among them. Due to the electronic medium, the Sarah Palin case should be groundbreaking. Here’s something for the less technologically inclined: whenever one’s cell phone is switched on, not necessarily making a call, just turned on, that even if it's not a GPS enabled device, it emits a signal that anyone who could access your SIM card number may track with an array of inexpensive software. GOOGLE GPS tracking devices. The phone’s speaker can also be remotely activated for use as a listening device. Perhaps you’re wondering, as did I, how certain individuals seem to know your whereabouts, or manage to show up when and where they do. High tech and tech devices lend the good, the bad & the ugly a level of sophistication hitherto unimagined. Cell phone option: remove battery when not in use: http://theseedsof9-11.com

@Ubber Baby: Yes, I do have to give permission to someone if they somehow figured out my e-mail password. That would be unauthorized access. I don't know how much more clear I can write it. I was responding to your query about if they had my address, what if they guessed the password (which they WOULD NOT recieve). I mean, you honestly think that 3rd parties (besides the NSA on some occasions) read people's personal e-mail every day? NO. Sorry. Your information can be transfered to a third party. This includes name, address, phone number, and possibly, e-mail address. A company might not get the e-mail address from the same source. Spammers for instance, often just mail out randomly, or have software search and find for them. The actual e-mails, which are the equivalent of letters, thus the term e-mail, and the password to that account, are proprietary (limited use/access) to you and Yahoo.com. Third parties cannot access this without permission. If you don't get it by now, I can't help you kid. Bye.

@Peggy McGilligan
That's paranoia from apparently a 9-11 "truther". The government doesn't have enough man-power (or woman- power) to track the locals of 200 million+ cell phones in the USA.
I'd be hardpressed if any combination of software/hardware (even at supercomputer status) could do that, let alone a human being. Stop the madness. Stop the lies. I'm sure I'll get some nosense truther response, so I'll say this ahead of time:
BULL $HIT.
Bye.
Posted by: Spook | Sep 18, 2008 4:23:02 PM
@Peggy McGilligan: Right. I just re-read your post. Apparently, you are refering to the ability to track down your cell phone, by individuals. The hardware is prohibitively expensive, which rules out your every-day kid/common criminal. This leaves syndicates. In that case, they would need physical access, plus, motivation (say, you're Bill Gates).
So, you're still being paranoid. The average citizen has nothing to fear.
Also, although not nation wide, a Federal district court (or possibly appeals court) just ruled that warrants by law enforcement are needed for such tracking. Again, it was in one area of the country, but it does provide some precedence. I wouldn't start cutting myself off from the world just yet. So still Bull $hit. Bye.

Hi, just to say I'm having some hot tea, and reading new comments. Things are getting better and better as the discussion runs from Palin, to focus on some important matters. Palin is dumb. Period. USA will commit a crime, giving her the status of a #2. The more I read, the more I think USA needs Mr. Obama.
George W Bush should be in jail. Irresponsable. Liar. Dumb. Murderer. Inconsequent. The world is a worst place thanks to this administration options. Where are the mass destruction weapons ? What was that all about, when some powerpoint presentation was shown at United Nations to prove existence of mass destruction weapons in Iraq ? Leave Iran alone.
Believe me, the world doesnt need US patrol in every corner. The world is not far-west.
Maybe Mr. Obama can help the world. Surelly hope so. Mccain and Palin will bomb the rest of it. No!
As for gov.palin@yahoo.com being private ??? pleeease, take the gov out of it. She used the email as a secondary governor email address. So now, Yahoo, give the backups to an investigation commission please. Don't you have laws to corrupt polititians ?!?!?
How can Americans let the country be led by LOBBYists ?!?!?!?!?!

When is an act of illegallity not the ceneter of the discussion? Is it not illegal to 'hack' anything? How evil to put up a shield of 'indignity' and 'shock' whne it serves an out of touch view.
Illegal is illegal and that is irrefutible.
Posted by: Dr Sea | Sep 18, 2008 6:14:34 PM
Some of you think that because it happened to Palin then it is illegal but when it happens to someone else, then "Oh geez". If hacking to Palin's email is illegal and crime enough for the FBI to investigate then where is the FBI investigating other similiar crimes? I want them on every average Joe's case, committed just like they are committed here. But the truth is that when Joe's account is hacked, there is no crime. Suddenly everything on the internet is public and not worth attention of the FBI.

This kid will not get in trouble. At All. Remember a few years ago when Paris Hilton's Cell Phone Email/Text Message account was hacked a couple of times? Yes? Lots of embarrasing text messages post on the internet? It was done the same way. Stupid Paris used her dog's name as her recovery question. Boom. Cracked Account. No one got in trouble over that, and no one will over this.
The Most that could happen is that Yahoo could IP Block the person, But that won't be effective, as he has demonstrated that he already knows how to proxy...
Besides, If my Yahoo account was hacked, I am sure the FBI Would get working on it right away... Yeah right.
Kid gets off free.

It is illegal to do government related business through the services of a private entity. Why? Oh.. just little things like accountability and being in the public interest. If she's doing these things before she's in office, God help us.

Technically reading someone's email is not a criminal offense, hacking into someone's email is. He got her email address on tv and he reset her password so that he could log in by answering the security questions which are her last name, zipcode for the city she lived in in Alaska, and where she met her husband which was her her high school which was all publicly available information online. Technically her email wasn't secured at all, pretty much anybody with a few minutes on their hands to look this simple, publicly available information up could log into her email account.
Posted by: Keith | Sep 20, 2008 2:15:41 AM
Also all of these emails were sent unencrypted over internet email servers anyway.
Posted by: Keith | Sep 20, 2008 2:18:17 AM
I agree that the hacker did something wrong. But what a way to show the vulnerability of bad passwords. It says something about the lack of Security knowledge of our "maybe" future president. The law says you can not use personal email for public business. She is breaking the law too. Which also says a lot about our possible future president. Its too bad they will probably hang the hacker and paint Palin as a poor helpless victim. Whats with the anonymity service turning over the records so easily? Those services say they keep no logs. Nothing is sacred anymore.
Posted by: Ziggyz | Sep 20, 2008 10:14:44 AM
I viewed Yahoo's official response from the V.P. of mail and it's clear that he doesn’t comprehend the problem or solution. Yahoo recommends lengthening passwords, which is good practice, but had nothing to do with this breach of Yahoo's system in the Palin situation.
What actually happened is a college student with no hacking ability was able to do social engineering on a public persona by exploiting weaknesses in Yahoo’s ‘password reset’ feature. He was able to use publicly available information about Palin to breach her Yahoo email account.
First and foremost, no account maintenance should EVER be allowed on anyone’s accounts from any proxy used to mask identity. Had the student used a foreign proxy instead of a domestic proxy service, law enforcement would have had a much more difficult time in obtaining logs that identified the perpetrator.
Secondly, Yahoo needs to strengthen the challenge questions. For public persona, name, address, and zip code are all easily found in public records. All this individual had to do was guess on the question of where Palin met her spouse. Again, this is publicly obtained information that anyone could have determined with ease.
I work in security and have implemented systems for financial firms which are mandated by FFIEC regulations to use strong multi-factor authentication systems. If Yahoo is to be entrusted with personal information by customers, they should do the same.
There are good third party software products that provide the necessary authentication features that would have prevented the Palin incident. Let's hope that the embarassment of this breach causes Yahoo (and any others that don't presently utilize them) to implement the necessary changes to their system.

The mind boggle. I can't believe the people here decrying the illegal hacking of this woman's email, and ignoring that their own government does this daily, without warrants, in order to prosecute crimes of roughly the tenth of the importance as the one she's committed here. To think for one second of making a VP of a person that would happily circumvent the FOIA with official communications on a Yahoo account (for chrisake) is almost as bright as having Halliburton execs on the Energy Advisory Committee (and one in the VP chair).
For a country supposedly committed to freedom and democracy, you have the most effed up system it's possible to imagine. When is someone going to limit private donations to political candidates, and start actually prosecuting some of the laws that are already there?
Get some balls, people! Everyone's watching, and no one is impressed.

lol, if Gov. Palin hadn't create a personal yahoo email account to circumvent public records laws she would of never had her email hacked!
Illegal or not she got what she deserved! That's is public disclosure of the very things she tried to keep secret from us! Karma'a a .....
Posted by: this is great! | Sep 22, 2008 12:35:17 PM
And even more importantly this incident has revealed what a total joke yahoo "password reset" feature is! The more these companies try to make their sites "secure" in a way that even the most idiotic user can understand has left our accounts FAR LESS SECURE!
When every damned website forces you to answer the same security questions it's not long before everyone knows your answers! And it's far to easy to socially engineer the answers as well, even if you don't know them, as yahoo and Palin found out!
Yahoo needs to take responsibility for her account being "hacked" because they're the ones who let the guy reset her password! All it took him was a quick google search to convince yahoo he was in fact Palin. She was not hacked, yahoo sent her down the river with their poor security!

The below paragraph comes from an article I found on the internet when I googled “Obama and the Kenya Elections”, go to the weblink below for the full story.
Clearly, Obama campaigned for someone who is corrupt, ruthless and has financial ties to terrorists. More importantly, Obama campaigned for a candidate who had the stated objective of dismantling US & Kenyan government efforts to root out Al Queda and other terrorist organizations. Organizations that had already caused the deaths of hundreds of Americans and Africans in embassy bombings. Senator Obama’s actions—intentional or not—were in direct conflict with the efforts and interests of US national security. I think this raises serious questions about the judgment, maturity and readiness of Senator Obama.
