Our Congregation of the Augustinian Sisters of Our Lady of Consolation was founded in 1883. It had its beginnings in Barcelona, at the Beaterio de Mantelatas de San Agustin in Calle Hospital, No. 23. The Foundresses of our Congregation were blood-sisters, Mother Rita and Mother Consuelo Barceló y Pagés, OSA. They were from Sarria, Barcelona, Spain.
As an Institute primarily dedicated to education, our Congregation was aggregated to the Order of Saint Augustine (OSA) on May 31, 1902. Thus, it became an apostolic branch of the Augustinian Order.
On November 30, 1922, the decree “Quod iam per Constitutionem” was given to the Institute by the Sacred Congregation for Religious. In accordance with this decree, and acting on the recommendation of the Prior General (OSA), V.R. Eustacio Esteban who visited the Philippines in 1928, the Archbishop of Manila, Most Rev. Michael O’Doherty, gave a written approval of the Institute as a diocesan congregation on April 25, 1928.
On March 18, 1952, the Institute received the pontifical “decretum laudis”.
In 1975, the Sacred Congregation for Religious and for Secular Institutes (SCRSI) granted Pontifical Recognition of our Congregation. As an Institute of Pontifical Right, our Congregation is religious apostolic in nature.
