Background to the Inquiry

On 11 November 1999, in answer to a Parliamentary Question, the Home Secretary announced the establishment of an inquiry into hunting with dogs, under the Chairmanship of Lord Burns.

The Inquiry’s membership and terms of reference were announced on 9 December 1999 by the Home Office.

Dr. Victoria Edwards, Professor Sir John Marsh, Lord Soulsby of Swaffham Prior and Professor Michael Winter have been appointed as Members of the Committee.

The Inquiry’s terms of reference are:

"To inquire into:

To report the findings to the Secretary of State for the Home Department".

The Committee expects to arrange its first public session early in the New Year. It will set out then, and on the internet, how it intends to proceed.
