If you read the last Pascal Lubin article on Game Industry Megatrends Part 3 you would have seen this coming. Sony unleashed a micro transaction system called Stash Cash for EverQuest I and EverQuest II. Now you can buy in-game items and knowledge base info with real cash. SOE also has plenty of guides and info on this new system and how to use it. WoW really needs to get some of this action and it would the best things since PB&Jelly sandwiches. Good bye gold mining.
In a weird twist of fate EA's Spore, the game notoriously caught inbetween the DRM battle, is the most pirated game. Slashdot has this article reporting Spore as The Most Pirated Game of 2008 and torrentfreaks has the numbers to prove it. EA responded saying some of the torrents were fakes, malicous, buggy and some were unsuccessful cracks or hax. As Gabe Newell and Valve said recently DRM was "just dumb" and I have to agree. DRM made EA's Spore developed by Maxis a big target. Ea seem to catch on and they even offered a DRM de-authorizing tool on Red Alert 3.
It was a tough year for some Game Studios. EA, Activision, and THQ had layoffs. Midway got bought out for less than what it cost to buy a Ferrari or even a house in the US (also 70 million debt). Konami reported huge profits from MGS 4 but Atari was this years bright star. Atari who had past decades of failure turned it around. Under the helm of Phil Harrison, the finally reported a big profit but also has purchased some big titles and studios like Cryptic Studios for 1/4th the cost of Midway.

Here is a demo of a fun puzzle game, strategy, and multiplayer game that is a huge surprise. The demo has been on some other sites but it really flew under the radar. The demo is limited in features but is still extremely polished, offering some challenges but fun even playing againsts bots. It is also from an indie developer and has few reviews making this even more shcocking. If you like the demo, the game is available to purchase at Puzzlegeddon Direct 2 Drive

Black Mesa Source HD trailer was released earlier this week and it looks fantastic. This is a remake of the original Half Life with with highly improved graphics and details that bring back memories when I first played Half Life. This baby looks so damn good, it looks better than what Valve even puts out. If you don't have a registered Fileplanet account get one and download the trailer. Otherwise click into the forums and their is a link for the trailer on Voodoo Extreme.

Catch this interview I had with the Unreal Demolition 2 Mod Team. The team discusses the excitement being announced as winners in Phase 1 of the Make Something Unreal Contest at the Austin GDC. Then things turned sour for the team the following weeks after Hurricane Ike came to Texas, a member suffers a blown PC, and another moves to the UK and does UT3 level design on a puny Macbook. Still the team made large strides in development and explains new gameplay features they created along with plans in the future they have for the mod.
