GENEVA, April 6 (Xinhua) -- Switzerland offered on Monday to provide immediate aid to the victims of a violent earthquake which struck central Italy.
"Switzerland is deeply saddened by this tragedy in a neighboring country," the Swiss Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The Swiss Confederation was ready to send rescuers and materials to the affected area in the event of Italy asking for help, said the statement.
However, the Italian authorities thanked Switzerland for its offer, but indicated that it did not need international assistance, the statement added.
The earthquake, which struck Italy early on Monday, has killed more than 100 people and injured some 1,500, according to media reports.
There are no Swiss nationals among the victims, the Swiss Foreign Ministry said.
