Things that go BOOM in the night

You know I was going to call this entry 'Boom!' or 'Ka-Boom!' until I realised that one of those is another comics company and the other used to be (I think it was Jeff Matsuda's or someone like that, right?).

Huh. I guess all the good names are taken.

Anyway, Chris mentioned this on his blog so I thought I'd ride his coattails for a minute. Hey, if you can't tug on Superman's cape, might as well tug on Chris'.

Dynamite.

I don't like to admit it, but they have my attention.

I know that the entire company exists virtually as an arm of Dynamic Forces. If you look at any of their books, they're laded with alternative covers - not just Red Sonja, but even lower sellers like Army of Darkness. They also almost exclusively advertise their own product. That's right; Dynamite must have very little advertisig revenue, simply because they don't have any adverts external to the company itself. Which means that revenues are driven by sales alone. Luckily, because of DF, each issue of most books come not only with four 'regular' variants shipping in equal ratios, but also a range of incentive variants (usually 2-3 per issue), plus 'high-end' foil variants in limited quantities marketed with DF certificates.

Let's face it, they must be raking it in.

It's a lousy business model from a fan's point of view, because the books are at the higher end of the market's price range to start with, so when a completist grabs seven copies of the same book, many at above market value, they're spending a lot of money.

Of course, Dynamite don't see all of that cash; the local comic book guy who sells you a variant for $20 probably got it for less than cover. Then again, he probably had to order a lot of extra stock just to get that variant, so he's left with that.

But I digress. The variant tirade is one that I'm familiar with from both sides. I rail against them with indignant outrage (How dare they?!?) and at the same time buy them (Oooh, pretty!) by the bucket load.

No, what I wanted to say was that - business perspective aside - I'm really enjoying a lot of Dynamite's output. The Red Sonja series - and its offshoots - have all proven very enjoyable to different degrees. I had a feeling that it was just going to be a T&A; book, and granted it has plenty of A and more than a little T, yet despite that it seems to know. It's a pretty self-referential read, and a highly entertaining one. Michael Van Oeming has really cut to the core of the character - she's a warrior born who tends to follow her heart, and despite her aggression she's surprisingly vulnerable when it comes to men. The first arc, co-written with the far-too-busy Mike Carey was nothing short of fantastic, and while the Carey-less 'Arrowsmith' hasn't been as succesful, it's still a damn good read.

Then you have Army of Darkness; I love the first two EVIL DEAD movies but really don't like the third as it pushed the franchise too far into stupidity for my liking (although it did have some great lines). That said, the AoD comic takes that stupidity and farce to the next level with a lot of success. I started picking the series up with the 'vs Re-Animator' issues and it's been a solid, enjoyable ride since, despite the changing artists, and it seems to be taking a welcome turn to horror with the current 'Old School' storyline. The one-shot Tales of the Army of Darkness was pretty damn good too. Another surprise from Dynamite.

I passed on Painkiller Jane though. Never liked the character for some reason.

Dynamite have got a number of fairly high-profile licenses coming through in the next few months; Battlestar Galactica - I love the series and it seems a natural for comics; Highlander - I loved the first film, liked the third and loathed everything else that came out with the 'Highlander' name tagged to it (sorry Scott!), but I'm looking forward to this a lot; and, er, Xena. Okay, I'm stretching 'high profile' a bit here as Xena was never anything but a cult hit, but it's a series tailor made for comics (never picked up the Topps series though). I'm putting my vote in for an Autolycus mini right now.

My point (and I'm sure I've got one somewhere) is that Dynamite are surprising the hell out of me. Every book I've picked up has been good, if not great, and covers aside they are coming out with a lot of good product. They're also launching titles that interest me, which is more than some other bigger publishers are doing at the moment.

They're a company that bear watching. Pick up a book - just choose the one cover you like most and pick it up - and I guarantee you'll enjoy it.

Oh, and I've got a pitch for a Highlander one-shot that I'm dying to put into writing. Highlander: Royal Blood. How can you miss with a title like that?

Caved again...

Damn.

Stupid Red Sonja variants.

After my higher-than-mighty 'I'm off variant' speech a few posts back, I caved and picked up three the other day..#6 red foil, #7 DiVito (which is just a great piece of art) and a Billy Tan #9 variant (I really like those negative variants for some reason; I know that they're just the same art with a weird exposure, but I'm a sucker for negative, sketch and 'virgin' variants).

I'm sure it wasn't to take my mind off the Thursday move to NYC. No, can't have been to take my mind off that....

And if I go dark for a while, you know why!

DC's best idea...

...has to be the 52 website - it's just a really good site.

From corporate sponsors (Cadmus Labs' "Nobody's perfect...yet" kills me) to informed polls (Booster Gold inc sponsors a poll about corporate sponsorship of heroes, and all options are positive) and 'news' articles (one about Star City sets straight the timeline of Green Arrow's injuries in his own book with his appearances in Infinite Crisis and 52), the site is jam-packed.

If you're into your comics, take a look - DC's fleshing out it's universe like never before!

Meow!

Someone please, please put Mark Brooks on a permanent gig at Marvel...say, the new Heroes for Hire?

Going Ape!

Mike Wieringo is running a series of ape-themed blog entries over at his homepage - so far, Invincible, J Jonah Jameson and the Sentry have all had the treatment - go check 'em out!

EDIT: Peter Parker just got chimp-ified, too...seriously, go take a look!

Variant, variant, variant...

One of the good things that has come out of my impending move to NYC (visas approved yesterday - two weeks to go!) is that I've had to reevaluate the comics in my life...and variant covers in particular. I've sworn off them, really.

Unless they're really, really good.

(Or in the case of Superman/Batman #25 yesterday, 'complete your collection' ones. And I don't even like that book!)

I blame New Avengers myself; I was sucker punched by Steve McNiven's Spider-Man variant to #1, and ended up getting the whole set of #1-6. I preordered a lot of them in bulk sets of 6 and ebayed the other ones, including 2 full sets at the end so I made out okay. It's a waiting game though; if you wait too long, you can lose a lot of money on them. The #1 Spidey variant is the only one that I think still holds water - but hey, I've got the set so I'm happy. I've also got th great 'Startling Stories' variants to #7-10, but they were a whole lot cheaper and easier to pick up.

About the same time that New Avengers started, I also picked up some variant reprints to a few other books...Identity Crisis, Green Lantern Rebirth...but they were reprints, not the 1:19 kind of thing that gets on so many people's nerves (like the NA ones) so I felt I could justify those. Plus a lot of them were really, really cool.

But Red Sonja...I have no-one to blame but myself. I know that Dynamite Entertainment has a lousy business model because they essentially profit from their DF arm, but I thought I'd give #0 a shot as I was really enjoying Conan and I've always loved swords and sorcery style stories.

Oh, and look...there are two covers. And they're only 25 cents. huh. No harm in picking them up. And those two sketch variants are pretty damn nice. A foil one you say?

Then came #1...5 regular covers? And they're all kinda nice...//collector's alert!!//...must...buy...all...

Crap.

I ended up getting all the 'regular' variants' for the series through #7, plus a lot of the rarer ones through the wonder of eBay. I know that a lot of people knock variants and the business push behind them, but hey if you don't want to buy them, don't buy them.

It's the same for any other book - if you don't want to buy it, if you don't enjoy it, then don't buy it.

But back to Red Sonja. To show you the true extent of the minor obsession there, I'm going to run down a list of which covers I have and haven't got over the weekend...and it may take a while...

Old Friends

No, not the uninspiring Angel mini series from IDW...

I was trawling the internet earlier today instead of working (because, y'kow, that would never happen) and I decided to drop in on Scryptic. It's a forum for (mainly) comic book writers that I used to hang out at and post at regularly until my job got in the way a year or so ago. There were a lot of good guys round that site, including Drew Melbourne (currently writing Arch-Enemies for Dark Horse) and Jason Rodriguez.

It turns out that Jason is currently working on an anthology of stories based on short postcards from the first half of the 20th century. It's a neat idea but that's no what inspired me to post this.

No, it's the fact that the co-editor of that volume is one James W Powell, who I used to work with at PaperbackReader. James was always passionate about comics, but eventually wanted to take off in another direction to the mainstream comics that PBR was writing about at the time.

The last I'd heard, James had started his own website reviewing graphic novels, but over the past eight months or so we kind of lost touch. It turns out that James also has his own blog here at blogger - The Collectors Mentality - which I had never realised.

I guess that while I meandered for a bit after leaving PBR looking for an outlet, James went and found one - glad to see its working out for him!

It's worth mentioning that another someone from those PBR days, the site's editor Chris Partin blogs at The Comic Addicts. It's almost funny how we all ended up different places.

Seeing James' Postcards anthology really has me itching to write again though...lately I've been concentrating more on screenwriting and plotting rather than comics, but they're similar enough. Plus I still have a few ideas brewing...either way, its good to see some of the old guys around.

Hmmm....maybe I should go post a comment...

Squeezing one out

I cannot be the only one who finds this picture a little...disturbing, can I?

Heroes!

NBC has just announced it's fall line-up - including HEROES, an ensemble drama (including the excellent Greg Grunberg) which centres around a group of strangers who get super-powers.

Sounds like one show that's almost worth moving to the States for.

Also interesting (and not even vaguely comic related) is WEST WING creator Aaron Sorkin's STUDIO 60 ON THE SUNSET STRIP, a new drama about the backstage of an SNL-like show, starring (amongst others) Matthew Perry and WEST WING-god Bradley Whitford.

Sounds good!

....that's 39 regular books, plus the ones I'm running out, plus likely additional minis for Civil War..that's waaaay too many - looks like I have to go back and be ruthless again!

Other books...

So that's the Marvel and DC's; what else is left?

I've already drawn a line under my Top Cow purchases - Witchblade, V.I.C.E., Hunter-Killer, Necromancer...all good books, but none of them really grabbed me enough to stick around. Plus, the shipping schedules on some of these books kills me; when was the last time we saw H-K? Was it #5 back in January?

Red Sonja - this book really surprised me; I was expecting T&A; (and don't get me wrong, it has plenty) but I wasn't expecting a great book! Now that I've shaken the costly variant cover thing that I had for #1-7, this is a book worth holding on to. The one-shots and minis have been good to, so I'll stick with it.

Army of Darkness - I love the Raimi films, and this book certainly grabs the spirit of them but again the shipping kills me. I'm going to pick up the conclusion to Old School and take a decision (although the next arc, with Ash vs the Universal Monsters does hold some appeal...)

Conan - ah, Conan. Great book, but with Busiek jumping ship I think this is as good a time as any to switch to the trade. It's been a great run!

Star Wars books - I've got into the Star Wars books in a big way in the past year, amassing complete runs of a lot of them. I'm going to continue to pick up KOTR until the first arc ends at #6, but after that I'm letting the entire line go. I know that I'll be able to pick it up on ebay in a few years.

Angel - So far these have been hit and miss for me; the two main Angel minis have been so-so, but the Spike one-shots, the Spike vs Dracula mini and last week's Illyria spotlight issue have all been excellent. I'll keep picking this stuff up till it bores me.

Planetary - I may have dropped a lot of Ellis' other stuff lately in favor of trades, but I'm with this book till the bitter end - which I understand is only a few issues off. Of course that could take years to see print...

And I think that's it...let the totting up begin!

Now what was that about mutants?

Last week I ran through my DC list and the non-mutant side of my Marvel list. Which means that it's time to take a trawl through the mutant titles. There seem to be a lot of minis coming to an end recently - The 198, Deadly Genesis (both of which are worth picking up) that it seems odd to be down to just the regular titles. But here goes...

Cable/Deadpool - I'm not even sure this is a mutant title, but as the big fella with the metal arm is showing up in one of the main X books soon I guess it is. As a title, this has had its ups and downs, but I'm a steadfast supporter of writer Fabian Nicieza so I'm going to stick with it - I undertstand its solid through #36, so I'm good for another 8-9 months yet at least.

X-Factor - Peter David just has a knack with taking second-string characters and making them interesting. Even with Sook's quick departure, this book remains a must-read. Plus a lot of these second-stringers are favourites from long ago (Siryn, Madrox, Wolfsbane) so I want to stick around.

X-Men - Peter Milligan's run has come as a huge disappointment to me, especially given how much I loved Human Target, but I stuck with it because I'm a completist. I will be giving Mike Carey a chance, although I wasn't keen on the Fables I picked up a while back.

Uncanny X-Men - Did you hear completist? CC's second return has been enjoyable for me, if not mind-blowing, so I'm looking forward to Ed Brubaker taking over the reigns. A keeper.

Astonishing X-Men - Whedon. Cassaday. Staying!

New X-Men - Despite the wholesale slaughter of half the cast, I've really been enjoying this book; I'm going to see how the current Crusade storyline ends before I make a decision...

Wolverine - I've always liked Wolverine as a character if not a book, so its one of those I jump in and out of sometimes. I'm going to stick with the book through Civil War but then I'll probably drop it.

Wolverine Origins - Liked the first issue, but was unimpressed by Way's Origins and Endings arc in the main title that preceded it. I think that this may be one for the trades...

Excalibur - This is a difficult one. I loved the original team, and I have a lot of affinity for some of these characters - Captain Britain, Wisdom, Juggernaut - but I just haven't been feeling the title. As difficult as it is, it's gone.

X-Men: The End - This only has a couple more issues to run so I'm sticking with it. Plus it's been a really fun ride!

Cancelled!

Word has it that DC's MANHUNTER and Marvel's THING have now officially been cancelled - sad news if both are true. I have to say that neither comes as a surprise despite being enjoyable reads.

I was planning on dropping Manhunter anyway, but in light of this I'll keep on till #25, the alleged final issue.

And I'll still be getting Thing through #8.

On the bright side, though, this now creates a gap in Dan Slott's schedule to take over a Spider-Man title...

Marvel list...

Marvel has always been my comics home. No matter how often I visited DC (or even Dark Horse or Image or IDW or...), Marvel has always been the place I went home to. So is it any wonder my pull list reads like a who's who of the Marvel pantheon?

Spider-Man - the original and best, Spidey has been the main man since before I even knew who he was. I drifted in and out for some of the early nineties, but was brought back by the much reviled Clone Saga. Was it over-long and plotted as they went along? Yes. Did it slap fans in the face? Yes. Did I enjoy it? Hell, yes - to the point that Spidey is the main focus of my back issue collecting. Anyway, point is that Amazing, Sensational and Friendly Neigborhood are on the list long term. Unlimited usually isn't, but those three aren't going anywhere. And that new costume is growing on me.

Avengers - Always my favourite team, I didn't enjoy Disassembled at all. That said, New Avengers has become one of my favourite reads every month and I'm eager to see where Civil War takes the team. On the list.

Fantastic Four - Another long term favourite, the FF will always have a place in my heart and the Mark Waid run was amazing. JMS so far has fallen way short of that, but with a big shake-up coming post-Civil War, I know that I'll be sticking with them a while longer.

Hulk - I came to a realisation a few months back; I haven't enjoyed the green guy since Paul Jenkins left. I ebayed Jones' terrible run and PAD's underwhelming return (such a disappointment from the guy who got me hooked on the big guy) and decided I'd finish the 'Peace In Our Time' arc and call it a day. But...Planet Hulk looked pretty good. I picked up the first two issues and last week the third and...damn, this is the best Hulk I've read in a loooong time. I'm sticking with the book. Dammit.

Iron Man - I've been on and off with this book since Tony got the armor back from Rhodey and kicked the crap out of Obadiah Stane back in #200. I loved Armor Wars, liked Armor Wars II, and sighed when Rhodey replaced 'dead' Tony as I knew he'd be back. He came back, turned evil and got replaced by a kid version of himself. I dug the HR Tony, but got bored with Kurt Busiek's take about 18 months in. I liked Quesada and Tieri's take on the sentient armor later though, but didn't like the Secretary of Defense stuff and was unimpressed with Disassembled. Liked the Ellis stuff even if Granov seems limited to me and it was ridiculously late. To make a long story short (too late!) I'm dropping the book and probably won't miss it too much. I am enjoying devious Tony in Civil War though - but he really needs to stop dominating Amazing Spider-Man. Gone.

Daredevil - I had a flick through my DD's the other day as I was sticking them in storage and came to a realisation; I really like this book. I liked it back in the Nocenti/JRJR days, the Joe Kelly/Cary Nord/Gene Colan days, the Kevin Smith/Joe Q days, the Bob Hall days and the Bendis/Maleev days (even if it did take a while to warm to them and the book seemed stuck in a loop for a lot of the time). But I love the book in the Brubaker/Lark days; it rocks, plain and simple. So on the list.

Captain America - When Captain America throws his mighty shield...go on, sing it. Gruenwald kept me entertained for the most part, Waid and Garney blew me away, Jurgens and Kubert carried on the tradition and then...wow, 2 issues into vol 4, I dropped the book. Awful. Disassembled - and Kirkman - brought me back, and now Brubaker (him again!) and Epting/Perkins have made this the first book I read the week it comes out. Simply amazing stuff. On the list.

She-Hulk - Dan Slott is a comic genius. Go read GLA or Spider-Man/Human Torch and tell me I'm wrong. This book is staying.

Thing - and so is this, even if it looks like #8 may be the final issue. Slott gets the FF's tough guy in a way I haven't seen since early Byrne - and I'm just sorry that no-one else is giving this book a chance. Seriously, it's great!

Thunderbolts - Fabian Nicieza just might be one of my favourite writers of all time. He gave an excellent run on New Warriors (Speedball lives!) and X-Force years ago, made me like the Acclaim characters (I am well aware I may be on my own there!) and brought the T-Bolts to greatness, both in his run on the original volume and in this title. With more twists and turns than a pocket full of licorice, this is one book that I can't see myself dropping anytime soon.

Marvel Team-Up - this is difficult for me; I enjoy this book a lot, and Kirkman is a great writer but I need to drop something...so this has to go. On the plus side, the Legion of Losers storyline was great (Speedball lives!) and if the book gets canned at #24 (something I sadly suspect) then I can always pick the last run up fairly easily. Gone.

Exiles - I have been with this book since the beginning, and enjoyed it every step of the way. World Tour has been a blast, but I'm not sure about half these new members (Power Princess? Really?) and I have a feeling that once Claremont comes on board, it'll be all change again. So...once the Tour is over, I think its time to call it a day.

Nextwave - Warren Ellis is a favourite writer of mine, and this book is just surreal...Immonen's style has changed dramatically since his Legion/Superman days, but it suits this book to a tee. But I need to make sacrifices, and I know this will turn up in trade, so its gone. Still love those covers though...

Ms Marvel - I like this a lot, and we're only two issues in. Carol Danvers has been another fave of mine for years (got the full original series) so I need to support the book - plus the art is amazing, and who doesn't love that costume? A keeper, at the very least for the first arc.

Young Avengers - this book surprised me a lot; I expected it to be awful but instead it's one of the most anticipated books...when it comes out. This run is finishing at #12 so I'll pick that up, and probably the Runaways crossover mini (a title I pick up in digests), then we'll see...

Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe/Legacy - I love these handbooks and haven't missed one so far (although the Secret War: Files of Nick Fury seems to have snuck past) so they are - without a doubt - staying.

And that rounds up the non-mutant books...not too many dropped, unfortunately. Let's see if the muties take a battering next post round...

Another Benes break

Because two Supergirls are better than one...

...and a third never hurts either! This one appears to be by Mariah Benes and was linked form Ed Benes' blog - I wonder if she's a wife or sister?

DC stuff I missed

Oops!

I missed a few DC titles off my list:

Catwoman - I really enjoy this book, and Will Pfeiffer has surprised me with his work on the book following Brubaker's departure. The OYL issues so far have been pretty enjoyable, and I've decided to stick around till the father of Selina's baby is revealed (please let it be Batman, please let it be Batman!).

Hawkgirl - Back when this was a male title, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would (especially Palmiotti and Gray's run, except for the R/T tie in), and I expected to blown away by Simonson/Chaykin's take on Kendra. Instead...eh, it was okay I suppose, but not mind-blowing. With current restrictions, it's off the list.

Gotham Central - ah, how I loved thee. So long, guys. And no, I won't be picking up the Spectre mini - I don't care who's under the cape, that charactere has just never worked for me.

Checkmate - tried the first issue. Didn't hate it but didn't see enough to want to stick around. I'm not too keen on Fire cutting people's throats, but I am curious why Alan Scott is taking fashion lessons from Nick Fury though. Just not curious enough!

Firestorm - this is a toughie. I like the new Firestorm quite a bit, but I can't help but feel the OYL twist was thrown in just so there was a twist, if you get my meaning. It's a good solid book but it's not burning itself into my mind right now, so this is off too.

Blue Beetle - while not great, the first issue was pleasant enough, and Cully Hamner's art is great. That said so far there is nothing compelling enough to make me come back for the second. Sayonara!

JSA Classified - I dropped the JLA counterpart book a while back after Warren Ellis' stint, but kept with this till OYL. But an arc focusing on Vandal Savage and Alan Scott? No thanks...

So too summarise my DC buying;

Still on the list for now..
Action Comics
Superman
Ion
Robin
Teen Titans
JSA
Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes
52
Catwoman
Aquaman (maybe, I'm flim-flamming on this one)
Birds of Prey

Still on for the duration of the current storyline ONLY
Detective Comics
Batman
Superman/Batman

Still to launch but probably getting
Flash
JLA

Dropped or cancelled
Gotham Knights
Wonder Woman
Green Arrow
Batgirl
Nightwing
Outsiders
Manhunter
Supergirl
Hawkgirl
Gotham Central
Checkmate (never really on the list, I guess!)
Blue Beetle (this either)
Firestorm
JSA Classified

So technically, I'm halving my DC pull list. Now if I can only bring myself to do that with Marvel...

Message from your sponsor...

Before I carry on with the pull list I thought it was worth putting up this from Ed Bene's Blog....

Someone give this man a Marvel assignment!!

What's a pull list?

Chris asked me what my regular pull list was, and I'm scared.

It's waaayy too big. I mean, I have a good job and my newly-minted wife (also of a good job) and I cover the mortage and bills pretty easily but even after all is said and done I spend a ridiculous amount on comics in any one month - or week for that matter. That's why I've got about forty long boxes of comics plus a load of graphic novels in storage right now. The wife has clothes, shoes and make-up, I have comics and DVDs. It's a trade off. (Or at least that's what I keep telling her).

What hasn't helped is these flamin' mini-series....Seven Soldiers has hammered me for the past eight or nine months (finally over!) and when coupled with the Countdowns and all the regular books as well; let's just say I'm glad I opted to avoid Annihilation - at least till they crop up as sets on ebay.

So the 'regular' pull list...be prepared this could be a long one!

DC
Action Comics, Superman, Adventures of Superman - great, we're down one Super-book now that Adventures has gone to the big pile of renumbering casualties in the sky. I've been reading Big Blue on and off since the INVASION! days (or possibly just before). My last big stretch away was just prior to the Loeb/Kelly/Schultz/whoever did Adventures relaunch in 1999. Which I guess means I have six solid years of the books. Whether I stick with the Super-books post-Up, Up and Away remains to be seen - but with Kurt Busiek sticking around I think its more than likely.

Batman, Detective Comics, Gotham Knights - GK is another OYL casualty, but truth be told I'm not going to miss it much. It's been an interesting choice, shifting the focus to Hush for the past year or two but it was wrapped-up in such an appalling way that I think it's better to let the book die now. As for the two main titles, again I come in and out of them. The last time I was away for any significant time was just before Contagion, so that gives you an idea. That said, Batman has never been a big draw for me but his supporting cast has. The fact that I get most of their books too is beside the point. Even so, following the current Face the Face, I'm dropping the two big remaining Batbooks. I'm sure Dini will be good, but space constraints will push them off the list.

Wonder Woman - rounding out the trinity, WW is one of those books that can be great or awful depending on the team. I started under Messner-Loebs, circa Zero Hour, but have picked up quite a few back issues from Perez's run. Both these guys had the chops for the character, but Byrne's run sent me packing early on. I then came back for the tail end of his run (much improved) and stuck around for the next team (who were pretty forgettable) and Jiminez. I can't remember is Simonson's disposable stint was before Jiminez or after, but that's in the collection to. Rucka took the character to new heights even if the final six months were hampered by crossover-itis. The relaunch...well, I want to get it as I like Heinberg's work on Young Avengers and love Dodson's art, but I can't see it sticking to schedule. One for the trades or ebay in the future from now on.

Flash - under Waid and Johns, this book ruled -plain and simple. The Millar/Morrison fill-in year was pretty good too, but those last few issues after Johns left were terrible. I'll pick up the first few issues of the new book to see who wears the tights but I expect that it's be off the list after that.

Green Lantern books - I was introduced to the title during Emerald Twilight and despite the uproar I liked Kyle. Now Hal is back, I'm done. I enjoyed Rebirth, but the first few issues of the new GL have left me cold. I also won't be picking up the Corps book, as the mini didn't do much for me. Finally, you've got Ion; I gave the first issue a shot, and I'll probably stick with this for its twelve issue run.

Green Arrow - I've been with Ollie (and Conner) since the Crossroads storyline way back in 1992, but the book is now officially dropped. Winwick started strongly but the past few issues haven't interested me in the slightest and the new mayor angle ignores the fact that Ollie's identity was public knowedge last I heard. See ya!

Birds of Prey - again, a book I've been with since the original one-shots. Gail Simone revitalised the book - no doubt about it - but the year prior to OYL fell flat for me. Something just hasn't clicked. The inclusion of the Jade Canary has me interested again, so I'm going to stick with it for a while to see where that goes.

Robin - I've picked this book up fairly consistently since Knightfall, and solidly since Contagion. Wasn't a huge fan of Willingham's run, but so far I am very impressed with the new OYL direction so I'm picking up to #150 at least. Unfortunately it looks like....

Batgirl ...has now been rendered moot. It seems pretty obvious at this point that Cass is now in charge of the League of Assassins. Damn shame as aside from a six issue break circa #50, I have the entire run -and I thought that Cass was one of the better characters of recent years.

Nightwing - I loved Dixon's run, and unlike some I enjoyed a lot of Grayson's. But Bruce Jones has, in one issue, managed to make me drop the book. Honestly, between the botch on Hulk and this, I question how he gets work at the big two (although I did enjoy his old Ka-Zar work...)

Outsiders - started well, but spiralled uncontrollably in the six months leading to OYL. And again, one issue in, I'm done. Thunder sleeping with a bad guy while undercover, Nightwing willing to let a village be attacked to keep their cover. Nope.

JSA - the premiere team book of the DCU as far as I'm concerned, JSA has been through its ups and downs but has remained a great read. The current Paul Levitz-penned series ender isn't reaching earlier series highlights but I'll keep reading till the end of the book. And then I'll probably pick up the relaunch.

JLA - the last series ended with a whimper not a bang, but with Brad Meltzer and the amazing Ed Benes at the helm, I'll be at least checking out the new run.

Teen Titans - this book is one of the few that feels revitalised by the OYL jump. New members, new conflicts, a new Doom Patrol, and a creative team firing on all cylinders, there is no way that I am dropping this now.

Manhunter - while I've been a big supporter of this book, recently it seems to have lost its zest. I'm not sure why, but the closer Kate gets to the mainstream DCU the less edgy the book feels. Sorry, but I have to let it go.

Supergirl - a good idea terribly executed, Loeb's short run on the book failed to catch my imagination (although I do admit a certain weakness for Ian Churchill's pencils). The OYL issue by Rucka and Benes had some things going for it (mainly Benes) but completely failed to interest me otherwise. All things being equal, I'd rather have a Power Girl book.

Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes - a book with a change it didn't need, this is one title that I'm going to continue with until Supergirl's presence is explained. Waid and Kitson are capable of great, great things (Empire, JLA Year One, L.E.G.I.O.N.) and while this hasn't reached their best work yet, I'm more than willing to give it a shot.

Superman/Batman - This had potential, it really did, but now it seems to be floundering. Not to mention that it is chronically late. I'll pick up the last issue of Jeph Loeb's run and the Sam Loeb inspired issue but after that I'm done. Good luck to the new creative team.

And I think that's it for DC - I tried a couple of OYL issues of Aquaman as well - not bad; Busiek and Guice make a potent team. I may stick around for a bit to see what happens.

Oh, and I'll be picking up 52 as well. Of course.

That was longer than I thought - I'll be back with Marvel and Indies later in the day...

So where've I been?

Man, I've been so busy recently that I haven't had anytime to update this blog, what with the New York trip and selling the house and everything else.

But so much cool stuff has been coming out recently that I couldn't let another day pass without at least mentioning some of it...

Daughters of the Dragon (I was late on the boat but am damn glad that I managed to get caught up)
Civil War (wow, Cap can kick ass)
Planet Hulk (Finally, Hulk SMASH!)
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (PAD pulling out all the stops with an unexpected return)
Superman...more powerful than a locomotive!
Robin (even if Cass's location is becoming disturbingly obvious)
"You didn't let the Joker play."

There's just so much good stuff that I'm having difficulty chopping the pull list for the move to the US (just 4 short weeks away now).

So far definitely off the list are: Manhunter, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Nextwave (still love those covers though!), Batman & Detective (following the current Face the Face storyline)...more to come.

Definitely NOT being dropped: Thing, She-Hulk, New Avengers, Teen Titans, Robin, Hulk...and more to come...

Its a good time to be a mainstream comics reader, maybe the best in the past twenty years. Both DC and Marvel are at the top of their game right now - and I can't wait to see what comes next!
