Apple's New Desktops

March 03, 2009 - Although rumors earlier this week pointed to a late March refresh of Apple's desktop series computers, early this morning the company rolled comprehensive updates to its iMac, Mac mini, and Mac Pro lines. Although not the huge stylistic upgrade that some had hoped for, each product type underwent several internal hardware revisions, while maximizing cost efficiency. So, without further ado, take a gander at Apple's new desktop series. More »

Apple Desktop Reveal Coming?

March 03, 2009 - As a company, Apple has a strong strategy for rolling out new products. With enough precedent to create a semi-regular schedule for product unveilings but virtually no pre-announcement allusions or teasing, Apple knows how to get fans to foam at the mouth for a glimpse of their latest batch of products. The most eagerly hoped for product from Apple this year will undoubtedly be a new iPhone in June or July, but in the meantime Apple may be rolling out some new desktops. More »

PC/PS3 Hybrid Controller

March 02, 2009 - No matter how long you've been a console gamer, you've been fortunate enough to enjoy a decent controller setup. Since the original NES layout, most of the mainstream controllers haven't undergone extreme evolutions, maybe a thumbstick here and a trigger button there, but the concept is still pretty much the same. Anyone that has tried to reinvent the wheel has typically failed miserably, which is why mLani Studios is instead attempting to combine two existing popular gaming devices, one of which doesn't even come from the console world, into a new breed of PlayStation 3 controller. T-Mobile $50 Unlimited Plan

March 02, 2009 - T-Mobile users continue to reap the benefits of the ongoing mobile communications war. In an effort to retain existing customers and grab a whole new user base, T-Mobile has taken their $50 unlimited plan off of beta mode and expanded it across all of the United States. You have to have held a T-Mobile contract for at least 22 months to be eligible for the plan, a decision the company says they made in order to reward their most loyal customers. More »

Gibson Loses Guitar Hero Lawsuit

March 02, 2009 - Hear that sound? That's Gibson Guitars getting owned by a US District Court judge when he hit their lawsuit against Activision's Guitar Hero with an epic fail. In case you haven't been following the news, the legendary guitar maker slapped Activision with a notice stating that Gibson owns a patent for devices used for "simulating a musical performance," leading them to believe that the Guitar Hero guitars were in violation of said patent. In retaliation, Activision filed a lawsuit asking for the patent, which was originally filed in 1999, to be invalidated, stating that Guitar Hero doesn't infringe on the patent. Earlier today, a judge from the US District Court for the Central District of California agreed. More »

The Evolution of Nintendo Dual Screen

February 28, 2009 - Back in 2004, Nintendo announced the concept of the Nintendo DS without revealing its entire hand: the company made mention that the new portable would feature two screens (hence the letters DS for "dual screen") but beyond that we had to spend months speculating the design before the company decided to finally show off what it had been working on. The Nintendo DS system launched in November 2004, and was upgraded to DS Lite status in April 2006. The system will once again get an upgrade in April of this year with the Nintendo DSi, featuring new elements such as built-in cameras, an SD card slot, and internal storage for digital downloads. The idea of a dual screen handheld was a hit for Nintendo, but it was a big question mark prior to its release. What you might find surprising is the fact that the DS wasn't the first time the company came up with the concept of two displays in a system. The following article is based on a feature I wrote back in early 2004 called "DS to DS." It explored Nintendo's history of dual-screen systems and explored the idea of what two screens could bring to the table, and to try and figure out what the system could possibly become while we waited for the full announcement. Much of what I wrote five years applies today, and with a bit of an update I present to you with the history of Nintendo's involvement with dual screen systems. More »

MobileMe Update

February 28, 2009 - Apple sent out a mass email to MobileMe subscribers today to inform users of some new features. The application, which allows users to keep their email, contacts, calendar updates, and more synced across multiple devices such as a Mac, PC, and an iPhone, has also received some improvements in existing areas, such as notifications and web performance. The Tech Behind RE5

February 28, 2009 - Earlier this month we had an opportunity to visit Just Cause Productions in Marina Del Rey, California, where all of Resident Evil 5's cinematic cut-scenes were created. We got to get down and dirty with the crew there and talk about the exciting new things they are doing with state-of-the-art motion capture technology. Just Cause Productions specializes in multinational multimedia productions, particularly in the film and video game arenas. One of their most frequent clients is Capcom, whom has utilized the studio's services for many of their biggest titles, including Dead Rising, Devil May Cry 3, and most recently Resident Evil 5. Windows 7 Beta Fixes

February 27, 2009 - Since Microsoft announced that Windows 7 would have a free open beta at CES back in January, countless users have downloaded and installed the operating system. Although specific download figures have not been formally announced, millions are estimated to have downloaded and installed the beta software. With each user intentionally or inadvertently serving as a quality assurance tester, Microsoft announced today that they have successfully identified over 2,000 bugs in the software and are currently planning fixes for each. Hearst Corp. Developing e-Reader

February 27, 2009 - Have you picked up the latest issue of your favorite magazines lately? Flip through the current edition and then one from two years ago and you'll notice that there are probably 75% fewer ads within the pages of the most recent version. Print magazine revenue in general is nearing an all time low, with even the giant brand names like Maxim and Sports Illustrated getting hit hard. Looking at technology as a plausible solution, Hearst Corp, one of the nation's largest magazine publishers, is preparing to launch an electronic reader that will do for periodicals what Amazon's Kindle is doing for books. Bioshock Syringe Replica

February 27, 2009 - We love Bioshock, and while the notion of an underwater utopia and having special powers to take down Big Daddies are cool, it's the retro items in the game that really tickle our pickle. Leading the top of the list are the syringes used by the Little Sisters to extract ADAM, the genetic material these cutie dolls suck straight out of recently killed bodies. Normally our fascination of such items are kept in the realm of fantasy, but this time around the ambitious effort of one prop designer has brought the energy-draining device to life. More »
