Quake Live Interview
Game Informer interviewed id's T-Head about Quake Live this evening. Here's a 'lil clip:
GI: It’s insane to think about what hardware was like when Quake III came out, and how people are playing something remarkably similar in a browser,.

TH: Yeah, I mean—in my opinion it truly is—it’s Quake III the way I wish it would have been, for free, and because of the clever way we have—like the maps and everything—delivered is, you’re playing it in ten minutes. So it’s for free and delivered over the Internet, and it’s like Quake III but everything that I wish—everybody wanted stats, everybody wanted chat, friends list—one of the big ideas that I had when I was talking to John [Carmack], which he sort of gave me the sad face when I asked about it was, can we do Web browser based game searching? As opposed to the in-game browser. And John was like, “No, that’s not going to work.” And so now that’s how it all works, which is awesome.

New Sedation Headset Rocks The Game Boy
Register Hardware has an article up about "PediSedate", a headset which has been designed to help calm children before going to the dentist, having an operation [or just when you need a break from your little bugger], etc. The headset is specifically designed to plug in to a Game Boy or CD player. Once you're all down with OPP, a can of nitrous oxide is connected. I want one.

Geoffrey A. Hart, a Boston-based anaesthesiologist, invented PediSedate, which it’s claimed has already been “very well received by parents, kids and health-care workers”.

Tuition is $2,250. Start 'em young! I bet a kid could learn a lot more over a summer if you spent that two grand on a new computer for them.
Demigod Piracy Update
The clarification bunny dropped off a new Demigod piracy update from Stardock boss Brad Wardell:

First of all, the 18,000 figure is the # of concurrent users at the peak – not sales.

On the Steam stats page, for instance, you can see the peak concurrent users on titles that talk to Steam:

Current Players - Peak Today - Game

  • 81,543 - 90,824 - Counter-Strike: Source
  • 57,343 - 68,662 - Counter-Strike
  • 18,788 - 23,755 - Football Manager 2009
  • 14,577 - 15,606 - Empire: Total War
  • 14,394 - 16,430 - Left 4 Dead
  • 11,860 - 14,030 - Team Fortress 2

So just above Empire Total War in terms of peak connections (game just launched so it's not a surprise).

The infrastructure was designed to handle up to 50,000 of these connections.

But on day 0, there were around 140,000 concurrent users of which 18,000 are validated.

Pirated users can't get updates or play multiplayer but they still touch the servers.

So over the first 24 hours, we had to essentially scrap together a doppleganger of the infrastructure dedicated to Demigod's multiplayer network needs, release an update to legitimate users to point them to it.

The result was that in the first day, day and a half, users couldn't connect to each other (the connection servers would time out) and even the in game experience was horrible getting through menus and such because even a simple HTTP keep alive call (something as simple as a http call to check for the latest version to inform users if there's a new version) would cause the in game UI to hang.

The consequence is two-fold: First, early customers got a TERRRIBLE experience. Second, the reviews (notably Gamespot) based their review on this terrible experience.

Now today, day 3, it's pretty much taken care of. Users are connecting in multiplayer, the servers are pretty responsive and we're adding more in preparation for the weekend.

If there's any IT people here, they can probably better explain than I can what we've had to do essentially. It's not like we keep a room full of unused servers so the challenge of putting together a duplicate series of servers in 24 hours PLUS Stardock and GPG having to produce an update to the game to point to those servers was quite an undertaking.

I'm sure there are a ton of really great headlines for this "not even nearly news" piece, but for the life of me I couldn't think of anything scandalous. Apparently former Friend's star Matthew Perry has Fallout 3 Hand from playing too much Xbox 360. He had to go to a hand doctor. /Partial-Snicker.
Meet Conan's Producer, Henning Solberg
In a new Age of Conan Dev-Blog, Famine chats with AoC Producer, Henning Solberg, a Funcom employee since 1995. Solberg's job includes tasks such as planning, organizing the team, setting priorities and staffing. Here's a snip on the next Age of Conan update, which sounds rather tasty.

The next update contains a load of changes, improvements and new content. There is way too many of them to list here, so I will just mention two of the most important things. The RPG system has received a major overhaul, and as a result of this items will become more valuable to the players. In addition the next update will contain the Tarantia Common District. Both these things have been in development for quite some time, and for those that are eager to test it out, feel free to check it out on our public Test Server. Keep in mind though, that what you can see on the Test Server is work in progress and subject to change.

SOE's Game Guide For Parents
Sony Online Entertainment has released the "Let Kids Game" booklet for free download. It's a guide for parents featuring third-party research, survey results, and tips for parents. In addition, parents who hit up What They Play can enter the “Let the Kids Game” contest with a chance to win an Alienware laptop and a Free Realms prize pack.
Now available at SOE.com and WhatTheyPlay.com, the brochure aims to reach out to parents to help them understand the often-overlooked benefits of playing video games, such as SOE’s upcoming free, family-friendly online game, Free Realms®. With the help of top experts, such as John Davison, co-founder of the online parenting resource What They Play, and Cheryl Olson, Sc.D., the “Let the Kids Game” brochure indicates that games are an unexpected way to not only bring families closer together but also have the potential to form future leaders. Contrary to popular belief, studies have shown that video games can be good for kids. Key findings cited in the brochure include:
  • Video games are related to improvements in vision, social interaction and visuospatial cognition (a skill associated with several careers, including architecture, engineering and surgery).
  • Playing games together can forge stronger family ties between parent and child, and between siblings.
  • People who play online games often emerge as leaders since online games offer opportunities to operate in environments that are global, competitive and emphasize large-scale cooperation.

BOH is a game of exploration and action. You move in claustrophobic and dangerous battlefields searching for the Evil Masters. This no easy task not only because of the traps-packed corridors and mind-blowing puzzles, but also because of the countless enemies that the Evil Masters throw at you more and more until you discover them - at that point, you will be attacked directly by the Evil Masters themselves, the toughest of all. Although your quests are made slightly less hard by the bonuses and power-ups scattered all around the battlefield, carrying out the missions demands lots of concentration and quick reflexes.

Interplay Close To Bankruptcy
It's more than likely that Bethesda will reclaim the Fallout MMO rights seeing how Interplay ended 2008 with nothing to their name, and only seven staff on the payroll:

According to the filing, Interplay ended 2008 with a cash balance of USD 0 and a deficit of approximately USD 2.4 million. The publisher is actively seeking financing or income, without which it will be forced to liquidate assets, sell the company or face bankruptcy.

"We continue to seek external sources of funding," Interplay said, "including but not limited to, incurring debt, the selling of assets or securities, licensing of certain product rights in selected territories, selected distribution agreements, and/or other strategic transactions sufficient to provide short-term funding, and achieve our long-term strategic objectives."

The report indicated that Interplay currently has only one project undergoing internal development, an MMO with the codename "Project: V13," believed to be the Fallout MMO first announced one year ago. Interplay has four other projects in early design stages, but without any cash in its coffers, it is unable to fund development.

The filing also revealed Interplay's head count at the end of 2008, which included only seven employees - four in game development, and three in "finance, general and administrative" positions.

Street Fighter IV Championship Mode Available Next Friday
- 4 Comments
Yup, the long-awaited Championship Mode update for Street Fighter IV will be made available for download next Friday, and what's more, it'll be free!

Capcom is bringing new options to Street Fighter IV with an eye towards serious players. Street Fighter IV’s Championship Mode update expands on the fighting fun by offering players the chance to compete in tournaments and to watch replays of the best tournament matches. Best of all it comes to you at no cost. The Championship Mode update will be available for both PS3 and Xbox 360 owners on Friday, April 24 (exact times TBC).

Championship Mode offers you the chance to compete in five different grades of tournaments, creating the right challenge for players of every skill level. You’ll score Grade Points (GP) for tournament wins, and as your GP total grows, you’ll become eligible to enter into more exclusive tournaments. Winning tournaments will also net you Championship Points (CP). CPs are like “prize money” up for grabs in the tournament. The higher the GP skill of the players in a particular tournament, the bigger the CP prize!

Replay Mode allows you to select and watch the best Championship Mode tournament matches.

  • On the PlayStation Network, you can rate matches while you watch according to characteristics such as “awesome” or “funny.” Replays are then ranked based on these vote ratings.
  • On Xbox Live, instead of rating the matches, you can choose to download and save your favourite replays to study the players’ techniques. You’ll also be able to turn on the input commands from both players to be able to review their button and joystick motions in precise detail.
    Demigod Day Two Status Update
Stardock's Brad Wardell clarifies that the pirates, now up 18,000 in one day to 120,000, aren't able to access Demigod's online modes due to CD Key checks tied to Impulse, but were able to slam the online infrastructure simply by loading the game, which initiates version checks, or attempting to access Demigod's multiplayer modes before being rejected by the aforementioned CD Key validation:

After a marathon coding session with lots of server moving we were able to release a Day 2 update which, from what we can tell from both the logs and from talking to people in chat has made a drastic improvement in the multiplayer experience. In a nutshell, today’s update let us connect to a different multiplayer NAT facilitator than the original. This one isn’t touched by users who get the game at retail (or those who have a warez version of the retail).

Now, I do want to address something about the update that I’ve seen users talk about. We aren’t blaming piracy for the fact that the day 0 multiplayer experience absolutely sucked. The issue boiled down to us having put together a multiplayer infrastructure that was designed to handle around 50,000 or so connected users. If the game took off, we would simply add more servers as the load increased.

But what happened was that we ended up with 140,000 connected users, of which about 12% were actually legitimate customers. Now, the roughly 120,000 users that weren’t running legitimate copies of the game weren’t online playing multiplayer or anything. The issue with those users was as benign as a handful of HTTP calls that did things like check for updates and general server keep alive. Pretty trivial on its own until you have 120,000 of them. Then you have what amounts to a DDOS attack on yourself.

So the day 2 update we released basically made sure legitimate customers were no longer being affected by those users. As a side note, no we can’t just eliminate the infrastructure being used up by warez users because they’re running the unprotected retail version and we can’t make a distinction between retail and pirated since there’s no copy protection. It’s not a huge deal in the long run (except to our metacritic score), it was just an unexpected challenge that made day 1 a very bad multiplayer experience.

    What’s next…

So we still have lots of areas to improve the multiplayer experience such as dealing with European DSL stuff (one example) and we need to make the pantheon and skirmish stuff more robust and provide more feedback. The team is probably exhausted so the next update may not happen until next week since the day 2 update seems to have made a pretty big difference for the majority that I think we can probably take the weekend off.

But next week I expect we’ll have an update that addresses a lot of the above plus starts to look at balance and regular in-game bug reports and such that we’ve been collecting.

Anyway, that’s all for now. I’m going home to sleep. No really, I mean it this time!

Pirate Bay Staff Sentenced To Prison
The Swedish courts made anti-piracy groups around the world extremely happy this morning by sentencing Pirate Bay's four main members to one year's prison time:

The court said that the four defendants worked as a team, were aware that copyrighted material was being shared using The Pirate Bay and that they made it easy and assisted the infringements.

While the court did not agree with the plaintiff’s estimates of losses (around $12m), it still set the damages at 30 million SEK ($3,620,000), a hugely significant amount.

Peter Sunde has already explained that this decision does not mean the end of the line in this case. There will be an appeal which means we are still far away from the ultimate decision - possibly years away.

As for the fate of the site, Peter has already promised that The Pirate Bay will continue. The site itself was never on trial, only the four individuals listed above.

Surviving The Left 4 Dead Survival Pack
The lovely and talented Kerry Davis and Scott Dalton whipped up a story on the Left 4 Dead Blog called Surviving the L4D Survival Pack. In it, as you might have guessed, they outline next week's big release:
Survival Mode pits your team against never ending waves of infected. Sounds simple. Just trap the survivors in a small part of a map, unleash the hordes, and record the longest time. Survival Mode, which will be released next week, is actually a bit more than that.

Our goals for Survival Mode are to deliver a mode of play distinct from Campaign or Versus, have games that regularly last under ten minutes, and emphasize competition with team play through leaderboards.

Survival Mode draws on the planning and communication aspects of a successful Finale or Crescendo event, while taking it to another level. It rapidly hits a fever pitch that only a well coordinated team will be able to successfully survive. Everything from simply covering a reviving teammate, to making every shot count to minimize reloads becomes crucial in Survival Mode.

Given the importance of pacing in Survival Mode, we need to define as precisely as possible how the difficulty ramps up during the course of a round. We have numerous variables to work with: mob spawn frequency, special infected spawn frequency, number of each type of special infected, total number of special infected, tank spawn frequency, total number of tanks, and so on. We need all of these variables to work together to create a fairly smooth difficulty curve.

DX11 Ported into Battlefield's Frostbite Engine
    - 5 Comments
DICE's programmers have been kept well-caffeinated as evident by the fact that they've already ported DX11 into the Battlefield's Frostbite game engine. Here's the scoop from PCGH:
Since currently there is no DirectX 11 hardware or appropriate development software, the Frostbite Engine was equipped with a switch inside the compiler that can be changed to DirectX 10 or DirectX 11. The developers at DICE are certain that the CPU load during API calls can be reduced noticeably with DirectX 11 drivers. Among other things the Frostbite DirectX 11 Engine offers HDR texture compression, Compute Shader and hardware tessellation for characters and terrain.

    Serious Sam Forever Interview

Seriously! sends word that Casual Game Informer interviewed the guys making Serious Sam Forever:
CGI: The Serious Sam Forever teaser claims that we will “be blasting through more enemies than we have ever seen before”, could you please elaborate a bit on this, just how hardcore is this gonna be? Are we talking Starcraft with a Korean playing then zerg rushing you?

MS: Huh, who put that line in the teaser vid? I know I didn’t…

NB: Enemies? We need enemies? ….

MS: Well, hardware has advanced a lot since the late 90’s, early 00’s, so that allows us to pull off a lot more than Croteam was able to in 2001. We are not trying to beat the Insamnity mod but you can rest assured that it’s going to keep you on the edge of your seat. Crank up those stereos, everyone!

NB: There will be enemies, lots of enemies; there is no doubt about that. How far will we push it? You will have to wait and see for yourself.

While we continue to believe that consumption based billing may be the best pricing plan for consumers, we want to do everything we can to inform our customers of our plans and have the benefit of their views as part of our testing process.”

This team of "ghosts" is armed only with knives, and must stealthily track and hunt the enemy team. This mode is exclusive to Cross Fire and no other mode exists quite like it in any other first-person shooter.

Ubisoft Formally Announces Assassin's Creed 2
    - 2 Comments
It's not like Assassin's Creed 2 is any big secret at this point, but Ubisoft has formally announced its development to the world. You can read more about the sequel in the latest issue of Game Informer.
Today Ubisoft announced that Ubisoft Montreal is developing Assassin's Creed II on all current-generation platforms for a scheduled Holiday 2009 release. The initial installment of Assassin's Creed was released in November 2007 to popular and critical success, selling 8 million copies worldwide and garnering awards such as Best Action Game 2007 from 1UP and Outstanding Achievement in Animation from the AIAS.

Assassin's Creed II is the product of over two years of intensive development by the original creative team behind the Assassin's Creed brand. In a vast open world environment, the game invites players to incarnate Ezio, a privileged young noble in Renaissance Italy who's been betrayed by the rival ruling families of Italy. Ezio's subsequent quest for vengeance plunges players into a captivating and epic story that offers more variety in missions, surprising and engaging new gameplay elements, diverse weapons and a profound character progression that will appeal to fans of the original Assassin's Creed as well as entice players new to the brand.

"Our creative team is working hard to top the experience of Assassin's Creed," said Patrice Desilets, creative director at Ubisoft. "We've made improvements to every aspect of the game. We've plunged ourselves into the stunning history of the Italian Renaissance so that we can offer fans a unique, varied and innovative Assassin's Creed experience."

Mars is an action RPG for next generation consoles. It blends the sensation of power and rhythmic aerial battle of beat’em alls with the progression, immersion and storyline of RPG’s in a dark and dreamlike post apocalyptic universe.

In Mars you play the role of Seth, an elite soldier with a dark past, or Pandora, an ambitious technomancer, experiencing two different gameplays thanks to the fact that each character played independently from the other has different backgrounds, skills and features.

In the destroyed world of Mars, two destinies mingle together. Two beings searching for their identity travel across a broken planet, constantly facing bloody political conflicts which tear the old colonies apart. Often divided, sometimes fighting the same enemies, both are the source of the advent of a new era…

    Demigod Update Released
26MB Impulse update improves Demigod multiplayer connectivity, but isn't guaranteed to fix every issue:

After a long night of connection server moving around along with a new ingame connection client, we are happy to release the day 2 update.

    Change Log:

  • Connection dialog now allows the host to eject players trying to connect.
  • New NAT Connection Server now isolated so not affected by general server load resulting in much faster, better connectivity.
  • Eliminated check for update on launching the game
  • CVP calls asynchronous (a server hicup on our side is a lot less likely to cause users to be disconnected)

    Notes:

This isn’t a silver bullet. This is basically what Demigod would have been like on day 0 (minus the eject button) if the connection server wasn’t getting pounded.

That said, we’ve noticed some issues that you should be aware of that we plan to iron out this week including:

    1. Because connections happen much faster in custom games, you can occasionally end up with players in the lobby that aren’t truly connected to everyone. Their ping will be yellow (or 0). The host will need to eject one of those players and have them rejoin.
    2. This update does nothing for users who are behind a firewall or router that has ports locked. See http://forums.demigodthegame.com/345345 for tips in that area.
    3. Obviously this is an update that we would normally want to run through a 2 or 3 limited beta since major surgery was done to the servers to reduce their load. But we felt strongly that we needed to get a release out that showed improvement for most people. We expect to release another update in the next few days once we can see the effect of the connection server in conditions we consider normal.

    Cities XL Beta Sign-Ups
Monte Cristo's massively multiplayer city builder is about ready to be tested - if interested, sign up here.

CITIES XL allows gamers to develop cities on realistic 3D maps using an incredible collection of unique structures and monuments based on American, Asian and European-influenced architectural styles. The maps feature a variety of environments: mountains, hills, canyons, beaches and islands, all set in different climates from tropical to desert, Mediterranean to temperate. Players must create the right combinations of social services, leisure activities, special events and other job opportunities within their cities in order to feed, clothe, employ and entertain their citizens. Be it planning and building a new zoo, public park, residential neighborhood or transit system - there's always a fresh and exciting challenge for would-be city managers and mayors in CITIES XL.

“We’re excited to be at the point where we feel we’ve laid very solid foundations for this unique game,” said Jerome Gastaldi, CEO of Monte Cristo, “Now we need to test the architecture to see how players respond to it, and to improve the integration of the online-gameplay and social networking features. In the next weeks, we’ll let more residents into our closed betas and keep stress-testing the edifice correctly.”

The game’s online features and services will allow players to create interconnected cities on virtual and persistent planets. Mayors can share and trade with one another, specialize their economy and team up with befriended cities to create sprawling metropolises. Life on the planet will be punctuated by events and competitions - a concert held in one town may, for example, be attended by visitors from other areas who can also enjoy a walk around the city to admire the urban creations of multiple players. By combining a fantastic single-player game with the social and multiplayer aspects of an MMO, CITIES XL will shape the future of the genre by offering more variety, bigger cities and multiple gameplay layers.

102,000 Pirates Overload Demigod's Online Infrastructure
    - 74 Comments
While one has to applaud Stardock's stance on DRM, their inability to keep 102,000 pirates away from Demigod has tanked their network infrastructure, preventing legitimate players from enjoying their legally purchased game. In addition, the temporary setback has significantly contributed to an abysmal review rating from GameSpot, who did not wish to give Stardock or Gas Powered Games any leeway, despite their own news section noting the difficulties encountered by the developers from GameStop's early launch, and that fixes were due to be released this very week. As Brad Wardell notes in his latest development update, many other games with online components have had rough starts, yet did not receive such scorn from reviewers.

Looking to the future, Brad reveals that pirates will be redirected to overloaded servers, reducing their effect on legitimate customers, and that a redesigned player connection protocol is in final testing:

First, we’ve been trying to shuttle off the warez users so that they’re not slamming our servers. Well, not slamming the same servers that legitimate customers are using. I’m feeling pretty confident that that is working better because there’s a lot more people in games with lots of people in them.

Second, we’ve developed a new connection system (pictured below). The connection stuff in Demigod is not part of Demigod but is rather part of Impulse Reactor which in turn is talking to the various connection servers we have set up to get player A to connect to player B and so on. It’s not done yet but amongst its new features is the ability for the host to eject players who just can’t connect.

Third, we’ve greatly expanded our capacity. I tell you, anyone who wants to know why we delayed Society (MMO RTS we are slowly working on) need look no further than how painful the first 24 hours since the official release of Demigod have been. That was done today and hopefully users have noticed an improvement.

We’re in the process of testing out this new update to put up tonight (less than 24 hours after the street date) that should largely fix this.

Following fifty-six hours of service at the office, Brad brings us an extra update on the game's status, in video form no less:

    Assassin's Creed 2 Details
IGN's kindly summarised Game Informer's exclusive Assassin's Creed 2 article, and if that's not enough, 'Sara' has an ongoing blogimabob entry that is constantly updated with all the latest viral happenings, be they postcards, webcam trickery, or tidbits hidden within site code.

The increase in variety hasn't just been restricted to the cities and waterways, though; outside the cities, Ubisoft is populating the countryside with more to do, including the ability to string together missions that will take you from Venice to Florence and the more rural areas in between, tied together with a stronger narrative thread. Promises of missions being stacked back-to-back -- about 200 in all -- abound, as do mentions of the different types of missions one can undertake. Because Ubisoft Montreal is being careful to mix things up, they're also claiming that the side missions can essentially be taken on in any order, and stretching from the city into the countryside and back.

With all the changes to the scenery and main character (Ezio is a far more affluent and cultured protagonist than Altair was in the first game), it's not really terribly surprising that Ubisoft Montreal also amped up the combat. Weapons can now be ripped from an enemy and used against them, but Ezio doesn't carry a sword with him at all times, meaning improvisation and getting the drop on enemies is more important this time around. To assist in this, he can fight bare-handed if need be, stripping enemies of their weapons or simply opting to whittle down their numbers and make a break for it.
