Here's the scoop: Newspaper reporters are about to rake in the dough all across America. We're talking millions, easy. It's a shame this will only be happening in your neighborhood cineplex, because actors will be playing the reporters and the money will be heading straight for movie studios Dreamworks and Universal Pictures. You'll probably have to pay $10 or more for a ticket to either watch Russell Crowe play a rumpled print guy uncovering a dangerous conspiracy of some kind or another in "State of Play," or see Robert Downey Jr. in "The Soloist." It's been another eventful week in the continuing original drama, "The Death of Journalism As We Knew It." In their opposing corners of the Web, the usual media analyst suspects digested it all and either wailed about, or hailed the approach of, the Death of Journalism. None of this helps Kery Murakami get any closer to his goal: to once again be a working journalist in the city of Seattle. [More...]

Google's chief executive told newspaper publishers Tuesday that they should continue to rely on advertising but seek new ways to reach readers. He urged publishers to focus on mobile technology and the development of new platforms for delivering news. Schmidt said there's still room for subscription and pay-by-the-piece journalism but he emphasized advertising. [More...]

Is the Associated Press trying to shoehorn a 21st-century technology into a 20th-century business model? Or is it merely trying to protect content that allows Google and others to rake in money while it is left holding the lost-revenue bag? The answers to those questions may end up coming from a courtroom. [More...]

No need to dial up the Drudge Report, pick up a copy of the National Enquirer at the grocery store checkout line or watch the top stories on the 11 p.m. newscast of an if-it-bleeds-it-leads TV market. You get all that and much, much less at AOL.com. At 9:30 p.m. PT on April Fools' Day, for example, the joke apparently was on the readers of AOL.com. [More...]

Scores of U.S. newspaper Web sites will become gateways for visitors to find homes for sale through Zillow.com as part of a new initiative between the real estate Web site and a group of 11 major newspaper publishers. The Tampa Tribune, owned by Media General, and 100 newspapers published by Community Newspaper Holdings are scheduled to add the Zillow search engine to their Web sites' real estate sections. A media company and a trade group say a lawsuit by Wisconsin's high school athletic association is unconstitutional. The Wisconsin Newspaper Association and Gannett filed a response and counterclaim in federal court in Madison on Tuesday against the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association. [More...]

It's been clear for some time that print media has to adopt a new business model or basically face extinction. What wasn't so clear, even a few months ago, is how fast the industry would decline. Recent events are a dramatic illustration of what appears to be a tailspin. On March 16 of this month, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer stated that it was printing its last edition, ending a run that lasted 146 years. [More...]

Time is experimenting with a customized magazine that combines reader-selected sections from eight publications as it tries to mimic in printed form the personalized news feeds that have become popular on the Internet. Called "mine," the five-issue, 10-week experiment also aligns readers with the branding message that its sole advertising partner, Toyota, has for its new Lexus 2010 RX sport utility vehicle. [More...]

This is how a major newspaper dies, and is reborn online, in real-time: Shortly after 10 a.m. Pacific on Monday, I find out the fate of the 146-year-old Seattle Post-Intelligencer on -- where else -- Twitter. P-I "Big Blog" reporter Monica Guzman tweets the breaking news: "Publisher Roger Oglesby just announced in the P-I newsroom: Tomorrow will be our last print edition, but seattlepi.com will live on."
