Barney takes on The Journal

The Wall Street Journal editorial board took its whacks at Barney Frank (D-Mass.) this morning — and the House Financial Services chairman returned fire in a phone interview with POLITICO.

The editorial lambasted Frank's proposal to provide FDIC-type insurance for some types of municipal bonds to help reduce the financing costs for governments incurred after major bond rating firms downgraded them as a group.

The editorial began with:

"Barney Frank's track record as a financial analyst is, shall we say, mixed. The House Financial Services Chairman said for years that a collapse of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac would pose zero risk to taxpayers. For most people, a mistake of that magnitude would trigger introspection, if not humility. But not the sage of Massachusetts. He's cooking up another fantastic subsidy — and like the last one, he swears taxpayers won't feel a thing. In his words, 'it would cost the federal government zero.' Uh oh."

Frank shot back, arguing that the piece suggested he was talking about insuring all bonds, when he intends to cover only some issues:

"It’s a typically dishonest Wall Street Journal editorial," he said. "The Wall Street Journal, with its conservative bent, doesn't like any public sector spending whatsoever. ... They are a right-wing voice and they have attacked me in the past and will continue to attack me in the future."

While I had him on the phone, I threw out a question about Texas Gov. Rick Perry's suggestion that his state might secede over Democrats' tax policies.

"I won't comment on him for the same reason I won't comment on Elvis sightings," he replied.

Barney is taking on some grownups instead of kids this time. Even Barney is doomed to loose this one. And, while we're at it, what's wrong with opposing government (public sector) spending? Unless one is a fan of waste, corruption, kickbacks, and favoritism that is.

I saw Mr. Frank on a CNN show the other day and he seems on the verge of a breakdown. He looked disheveled, was yelling and tense, kind of like he was when he was on with O?Reilly. My wife is a social worker and thinks he has already had a breakdown. She tells me if you listen closely everything he says sounds perverse. He talks about Obama?s huge stimulus package. He calls congressman Boehner congressman Boner. He refers to multiple big bonuses as big bone-i. She thinks he doesn?t realize what he?s saying. You think maybe it?s time for an intervention to help the poor man?

Gratuitous homophobic statements aside, Barney Frank has been a major player in the Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac debacle from the start. He not only resisted regulation of them, he continually pushed for more money, and riskier spending. No body has excused the Republicans for their gutless record of allowing the Democrats to Block the regulations that was so strongly needed, but Barney Frank continues to compound his errors by proposing further injurious policies. As the WSJ piece pointed out, not only are some of these municipalities bad risks, but that having insurance covering the bond holders it increases the likelihood of them defaulting on the bonds.

This Republican/Democrat bashing is pointless ... really, what positive contribution has Barney Frank made to the financial mess? He (and Pelosi) had two years in power before Bush retired to prevent the current crisis but did nothing, so the Democrats own this as much as Bush. His relationship with Freddi/Fannie is more than well understood for its truth. Why do the Democrats of Mass. keep electing such a low caliber performer when they can easily seat, without any difficulty, a brilliant, hard working democrat that would show the rest of the country that the folks from Mass. understand the seriousness of the mess we are all in and truly get it?

What a bunch of crybabies some of you people are. You act like the republicans had nothing to do with this mess President Obama is trying to fix. Barney Frank wasn't the chairman of that committee during most of the time Bush was president. If you remember republicans controlled all the committees. Republicans are the ones that said government is the problem. Remember your hero Reagan said government has to get out of the way. Now you got banks and business corporations in charge of america. Stop your crying and stop blaming everything on the democratics. Your party will continue to lose until you start taking responsibility for what republicans have done.

The WSJ may have a conservative bent, but they don't shun good ideas, and this isn't a good idea. Some of the comments below are despicable, but Barney is dead wrong on this issue. The Govt already insures our bank deposits, their is no need to insure municipal bonds. Why? They already enjoy interest rates that near treasuries -- and to boot, are tax exempt. What Barney wants to do is bad policy, he wants to meddle in an industry that is fine. This guy needs to be removed from his chairmanship. He doesn't understand risk, which, in my opinion, is the point of the committee he chairs.

I am a democrat who doesn't feel that it is appropriate to comment on someone's sexual orientation. But, what Barney Frank is concocting is a disaster. He wants to insure all GO debt sold by Municipalities. That is madness. The weight of unfunded liabilities many cities and towns are "not" dealing with is staggering. Sure these same cities and towns may not default on their debt tommorow, but how about 20 years from now when you are forced to pay on these liabilities? What then? What will be sure to happen is what is happening with GM now -- Who figured 20 years ago that GM debt would be worthless? Bottom line is, this is awful policy regardless of your party affiliation, and I am happy that the WSJ is sounding the alarms. I love our president, and stand for democratic principals, but Barney Frank needs to be stopped. Seriously.

That is a lie. Frank wants to risk taxpayer money to insure all municipal debt issuance. That is what he wants. If Simmonsville AL wants to build a boondogle using GO debt, he wants to insure that tax-payer money, to (in theory) drive down issuance costs. His argument? Municipalities are all sound? Is he serious? Municipalities, like GM, have been promising these ridiculous retirement packages that will "by statute" need to be paid out. So who loses in the end -- that's easy, bond-holders. Now this tool wants to make it so that us taxpayers insure those bonds. He needs to be stopped. Seriously.
