About the NZSO NYO

The NYO was founded by the NZSO’s then Music Director, John Hopkins, in 1959. In the fifty years of its existence, the NYO has given hundreds of talented young musicians the thrill of playing in a quality, full-size symphony orchestra under the direction of a distinguished list of eminent conductors.

Many NYO players have gone on to become professional orchestral musicians (some of them as current members of the NZSO). Others have carved out successful careers in quite unrelated areas but with their lives enriched forever by the unique experience of their time in the NYO.

We want to make the 2009 NYO 50th anniversary season memorable. More than that, we want to use the 50th anniversary to introduce some new features to the NYO programme that we hope will continue to enhance the experience for young musicians in the years to come.

In 2009, we are expanding the NYO activities by introducing a National Music Camp in Hawke’s Bay in addition to the annual national tour in July.

Richard Gill Conductor
Richard Gill is one of Australia’s preeminent and most admired conductors, and is internationally respected as a music educator, specialising in opera, musical theatre and vocal and choral training. Richard Gill’s work in developing young musicians and creating opportunities for them is recognised worldwide. He is the Artistic Director of the Education Program for the Sydney Symphony, and Music Director of Victorian Opera.

Vesa-Matti Leppänen Violin
Vesa-Matti Leppänen is Concertmaster of the NZSO and a prize-winner for solo violin and chamber music in his native Finland. Since arriving in New Zealand he has established a career as one of the most versatile and active violinists in the country.

Eyal Kless* Viola
Eyal Kless, born in Israel, has performed and taught thoughout the world, fast establishing himself as a dynamic and versatile musician. A member of the Manchester Piano Quartet, he is also teaching at the Royal Northern College of Music, Chethams School of Music in Manchester and Buchman Meheta Academy.

English conductor Paul Daniel in his first collaboration with the NZSO National Youth Orchestra. Former Music Director of the English National Opera, he is currently the Principal Conductor of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra.

John Chen Piano
John Chen became the youngest ever winner of the prestigious Sydney International Piano Competition in 2004. He began his piano studies at the age of three and won his first piano competition at the age of nine. He made his official orchestral debut aged 15, performing Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No 3 with the NZSO.

Calling all National Youth Orchestra Alumni!


Welcome to the 50th Anniversary Season of the NZSO NYO!  The NYO will celebrate its birthday with a three-concert tour of Mahler’s monumental Symphony No 7 under the direction of renowned British conductor Paul Daniel.  But to make the party even more special we are offering NYO alumni the chance to join us for a weekend reunion in Wellington during the 2009 NYO Tour, and we would love to see you there.
 
You are one of the more than 1700 alumni from the 50 history of our great National Youth Orchestra whose names we have collected during the past year.  We are delighted to be able to give you the chance to catch up with colleagues from your own youth orchestra days, swap stories and compare experiences with other alumni, and to meet the current generation of young musicians now making their own musical memories.
 
A number of activities have been scheduled for the weekend, including attendance at a National Youth Orchestra concert and rehearsal, informal gatherings and the chance to support the future activities of the NYO by joining us for the 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner fundraiser.  Other highlights include the opportunity to meet the founder of the NYO, John Hopkins, and a farewell gathering that will feature a photographic display covering the full 50 year history of the orchestra. NYO Gala Dinner Fundraiser                                                              
7pm, InterContinental Hotel

We will be hosting a special Gala dinner fundraiser celebrating the NYO’s last 50 years of success and looking towards its future. This will provide an excellent opportunity for you to meet up again with other NYO members from your own time in the Orchestra. The evening’s entertainment will include performances by current NYO players. Please come and join with other Alumni for this special night of celebration, and support the future of the NYO. We hope that this will be a great way to kick off the reunion weekend.

The 2009 NYO concert season will open in the Michael Fowler Centre with Only to the Highest Mountain by Composer in Residence Natalie Hunt. John Chen will perform Ravel’s gorgeous Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, and the orchestra, under the baton of Paul Daniel, will scale the heights of Mahler’s Symphony No 7.
