TGIF: This Game is Free

Articles | Apr 17, 2009 06:44 PDT | Comment

Long before the days when I had a job that actually paid me to play games during work hours, I was still sneaking in playtime. When my bosses weren't looking, I quickly opened up a browser, did a quick search for flash games, and was entertaining myself within a few moments.

Thankfully a lot has changed in my job world since then. Nowadays I get to play games and get paid for it and don't have to keep my fingers hovering over the Alt and Tab keys. But I know that's not the case out there for many of you, and so I am going to start bringing to light a choice free game a week for you to bide your time on, whether at work or home when you need a brief, and awesome distraction. The Pirate Bay Founders Jailed

PC News | Apr 17, 2009 05:49 PDT | Comment

If you're the sort of person that can't stand the thought of missing out on the latest episode of "Lost" or "Fringe" then chances are that someone's told you about The Pirate Bay. The Swedish-operated Internet site is largely considered to be the biggest and best torrent site on the web, but the BBC news service is reporting today that the site's creators were sentenced to one year in jail for breaking copyright law.

The four people currently running the site were also ordered to pay 3.5 million dollars in damages to the likes of Warner Bros., Sony Music Entertainment, EMI and Columbia Pictures. Read More »

MadWorld and GTA: Chinatown Wars Sales Disappoint

Wii News | Apr 17, 2009 04:51 PDT | Comment

Sales numbers often prove that game critics really don't have that much of a say in how a game performs at retail. Gamasutra's confirmed that with NPD stats on the sad initial sales of two critically acclaimed games, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (DS) and MadWorld (Wii). While both received an overall critical score of higher than 80, neither of them managed to sell even 100,000 units in their first month at retail. Read More »

So You Want to be a Raider? Part One

PC Articles | Apr 17, 2009 04:51 PDT | Comment

One of the biggest benefits of writing about videogames professionally is that by combining your hobby with your work you're able to satisfy your research needs while simultaneously enjoying yourself, killing two birds with one proverbial stone. In my case, I've been able to spend hundreds of hours playing World of Warcraft over the past few years without feeling too guilty about it.

I've quit for several months at a time, usually to dabble in another MMO, yet always come back to experience the lastest WoW content update or expansion. In preparation for the 3.1 patch and Secrets of Ulduar, I decided that I wanted to join a raiding guild that was all about progression, tackling the toughest bosses and pushing themselves to experience all the game had to offer. Lots of game journalists play WoW here and there, but very few are in successful raiding guilds that manage to clear content. Read More »

EA Plans Celebration for 1,000,000th Spore Penis Creature

Humor | Apr 17, 2009 09:47 PDT | Comment

Spore might not be all over the news anymore since it's been released, but it certainly hasn't petered out. Thousands of new creatures are created daily, several of which are approximations of pop culture icons, or even inanimate objects. However, no person, character, or object has seen the fan devotion as the human male anatomy's most important member: the penis. Since the early release of the Creature Creator, gamers and non-gamers alike have been hard at work pumping out waves of creatures that fans simply refer to as "penis monsters." Read More »

Nintendo Dominates March Hardware Sales

Nintendo DS News | Apr 17, 2009 05:58 PDT | Comment

In a slight case of blowing one's own trumpet, Nintendo has issued a statement today which reveals that for the month of March, the Nintendo Wii and DS hardware represented nearly 60 percent of all hardware sales in the U.S. This figure comes in by way of the NPD Group, which also notes that Pokemon Platinum Version on the DS sold nearly 805,000 units in the same month, making it the second-best seller for March.

"Wii tallied sales of nearly 601,000 in March, while Nintendo DS sold more than half a million, even in advance of the April 5 launch of the new Nintendo DSi system. Both Wii and Nintendo DS extended their lead as the best-selling video game systems of this generation." Read More »

Assassin's Creed II Officially Announced Via Trailer

Xbox 360 News | Apr 17, 2009 05:32 PDT | Comment

Yesterday Ubisoft decided it was time to send out the official word on Assassin's Creed II, the follow-up to 2007's high-profile action adventure game. The teaser trailer doesn't give a lot away, but now Ubisoft has graced the gaming community with a few scant details -- including the name and background of the new main character Ezio -- in the form of a press release to accompany the movie.

"Assassin's Creed II is the product of over two years of intensive development by the original creative team behind the Assassin's Creed brand. In a vast open world environment, the game invites players to incarnate Ezio, a privileged young noble in Renaissance Italy who's been betrayed by the rival ruling families of Italy." Read More »

Capcom's Street Fighter IV is getting an update on April 24th which will patch a new championship mode into the popular fighting game. Coming to both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions, the new mode will give players the chance to compete in tournaments and watch replays of the best fights from tourny matches.

"Championship Mode offers you the chance to compete in 5 different grades of tournaments, creating the right challenge for players of every skill level. World of Warcraft 3.1: Inside the Argent Tournament

PC Articles | Apr 16, 2009 04:46 PDT | Comment

While the Ulduar raid instance presents the next challenge for raiders to steamroll through and then whine about for the next few months, the World of Warcraft 3.1 patch also introduced a whole new quest hub that should suit just about any player. Yes, even those keyboard-turning clickers who can't get into a proper raiding guild.

The Argent Tournament Grounds are located in the northeast part of Icecrown, just north of Sindragosa's Fall. You can pick up a quest that will lead you there at Krasus' Landing in Dalaran, and it's only a short flight north to the Tournament Grounds. Read More »

'Saw' Game Will Deliver True Torture

Humor | Apr 16, 2009 03:09 PDT | Comment

The upcoming videogame based on the "Saw" horror films will closely approximate being strapped to a chair and forced to figure out a confusing electronic torture device for the amusement of its sadistic creator, said project lead Steven Richards.

"When Konami took over production, we asked ourselves what type of game would appeal to both gamers and horror fans," said Richards. "What we came up with was, a game so terrible that people are willing to saw off their own feet to avoid playing it in the first place. Frankly, we think it's a winning concept." Read More »

Big Announcements for Sony's SingStar

PlayStation 3 News | Apr 16, 2009 02:10 PDT | Comment

It's been a slow crawl for SingStar on PS3. The release schedule for SingStore songs has been a bit slower than most North American gamers would like, and the disparity between the British store and the North American one has been fairly big. Fortunately, there have been some great updates, such as the disc-swap patch that let PS3 owners use SingStar PS3's disc-swap feature with PS2 versions. It looks like another big global update is coming next week.

According to Sony, next week's patch will provide you with a voice-control menu. It'll let you pick your tracks by speaking into the microphone rather than scrolling through menus. It also lets you find and purchase songs in the SingStore. Both My SingStar Online, the game's community hub, and the SingStore will get a redesign in the patch. Sony also plans to update the game to feature trophy support, adding 30 trophies to the game. Read More »
