Multiple Sclerosis Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord). Commonly referred to as MS, multiple sclerosis is a disorder in which patches of myelin and underlying nerve fibers in the eyes, brain, and spinal cord are damaged or destroyed. MS usually affects women more than men. The disorder most commonly begins between ages 20 and 40, but can strike at any age. The exact cause of MS is not known.

Deep Brain Stimulation Can Improve Sense of Smell

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - In a small study of patients with Parkinson's disease, treatment with deep brain stimulation was more effective than drug therapy in improving their sense of smell (olfaction), which is often impaired with the neurological condition. This finding supports the belief that deep brain stimulation may improve both movement and non-movement symptoms of the disease.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Contrary to prior evidence, it's possible that blacks may actually have more episodes of atrial fibrillation (periods of irregular heart beat), than whites, possibly because it's intermittent and therefore difficult to identify, according to a new study.
