BÜLENT KENEŞ Columnists
Jewish lobby, Armenian resolution and possibilities
A lobby that has been working stealthily in the media and in diplomatic circles has been claiming, as its main line of argument, that having harshly protested against Israel for the massacre it perpetrated in Gaza, Turkey will have to pay a heavy price and that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's debate in Davos has only served to accelerate the payback process.
EKREM DUMANLI Columnists
Anti-Semitism?
In one of his recent articles (Feb. 6), Cengiz Çandar made an important observation that deserves some thought. “The Turkish opponents of [Prime Minster Recep] Tayyip Erdoğan are rubbing their hands with the possibility that the cross [which has been drawn] over Erdoğan’s photo in Israel will also be drawn by Washington.
BERİL DEDEOĞLU Columnists
Abbas’ visit to Turkey
The recent visit to Turkey by Mahmoud Abbas, the leader of the Palestinian Authority, needs to be taken into account. Even the fact that this visit coincides with a period in which people have started asking, after the "Davos crisis," whether Turkey is preparing to become the advocate of Hamas has meaning in itself.
YAVUZ BAYDAR Columnists
The case of Karamehmet vs. the public
The panorama is of a swamp. The leaks and revelations of secret meetings, deals, threats, "carrots," orders and "polite" demands all tell us of a Turkey, sunk in political filth, in which the media has been a key player in a game of keeping democracy at a "safe distance."
AMANDA AKÇAKOCA Columnists
Let’s not forget Georgia
It is easy for one crisis to overtake another. With the ongoing global economic crisis, the recent Russia-Ukraine gas crisis and the crisis in Gaza, little Georgia seems to be increasingly forgotten.
DOĞU ERGİL Columnists
Old problems and new leadership
President Barack Obama pledged a new start with the Muslim world in his inaugural speech. If this policy proposal is to have any consequence, the US government has to broker peace between Israel and the Palestinians.
İBRAHİM ÖZTÜRK Columnists
Facing challenges in production
Following the release of industrial figures by the Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat) in December, we can now see the big picture of industrial production in 2008.

CCTV cameras: a threat to privacy or a way to beat crime?
When I go to the United States to visit friends and family on holiday, I often have people express their concern for my safety in the Middle East. I usually just reply by saying that life has become a lot more complicated everywhere. It presents unusual security challenges.
BERK ÇEKTİR Columnists
Responsibility of a guarantor (1)
If I’m not mistaken, there is a song (quite old by now) that goes something like “That’s what friends are for…” Sometimes friends are designated as guarantors, but this may end up with you losing a friend. One saying states, “If you don’t want to lose your best friend, never get into financial commitments with him/her.”
FATMA DİŞLİ Columnists
Is the CHP developing into a real opposition?
The main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) continues to surprise with its latest moves, such as accepting covered women into the party’s ranks and supporting Quran courses.
