Faura HallCenter of Excellence for Information Technology

The Year of the Pig is off to an auspicious start for the Department of Information Systems and Computer Science (DISCS). In a letter to University President Rev. Fr. Bienvenido F. Nebres, S.J. dated 13 February 2007, Nenalyn P. Defensor, Commissioner of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) said, “Allow me to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Ateneo de Manila University for its inclusion in the list of Centers of Excellence for Information Technology program.”

Centers of Excellence (COEs) are higher education institutions (HEIs) that demonstrate the highest degree or level of standards along the areas of instruction, research, and extension work. They provide much-needed leadership in all aspects of development in specific areas of discipline, so much that HEIs in the region benefit from the strengths that can be derived from these centers.

Since 2000, DISCS had enjoyed Center of Development (COD) status, one level below COE. At the time, though, there were no COEs for information technology. CHED only issued applications for COE status for information technology in 2006. DISCS submitted its applied during the first semester of school year 2006-2007 and received notification of COE status in February 2007.

Vision
The Ateneo de Manila's Department of Information Systems and Computer Science envisions a globally-competitive Philippines whose citizens are empowered by information and its supporting technologies.

Mission
In partnership with the Ateneo community and the various sectors of society, the Department of Information Systems and Computer Science will develop world-class information technology professionals capable of designing and implementing information systems that meet society's needs. The Department aspires to produce graduates who are technically skilled and solidly grounded in computational theory, able to adapt to changes in technology and able to address a wide breadth of problem situations. The Department's graduates should also have the interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with other people.
