Tom Morello’s Street Sweeper Social Club Posts First Single

4/28/09, 8:32 am EST

Tom Morello’s newest side project, Street Sweeper Social Club — who are already set to open on the Jane’s Addiction/Nine Inch Nails tour — have announced the details of their self-titled debut album. The band, featuring rapper Boots Riley of the Coup, will release the 11-track LP on June 16th through WMG’s Independent Music Group. The album’s first official single, “100 Little Curses,” is streaming now on Street Sweeper Social Club’s MySpace page.

“It’s revolutionary party jams,” Morello said in a press release posted on the band’s MySpace. “It’s got huge steamroller riffs combined with depth, charge, funk, while Boots unloads clip after clip of incendiary rhymes rich with satire and venom.” Morello has remained active since the break-up of Audioslave, first reuniting with Rage Against the Machine, then branching out with his solo the Nightwatchman and finally launching the Axis of Justice tour. With Street Sweeper Social Club, Morello has linked up with the similarly politically minded Riley of the poli-hip-hop duo the Coup. “This is a time when the working class is being fleeced left and right. More families will be homeless and more people will be jobless. They’ll need something to listen to on their iPods while storming Wall Street,” added Riley.

While fans were left disappointed that the Rage reunion never resulted in new songs, between Street Sweeper Social Club and Zack de la Rocha’s own One Day as a Lion, there’s a pair of quality Rage Against the Machine facsimiles out there making rock-heavy rap music for the Marxist set. In addition to the first single currently streaming on MySpace, a pair of Street Sweeper tracks also appeared on the Jane’s Addiction/Nine Inch Nails EP that was available as a free download last month.

90's rule, but 80's suck | 4/30/2009, 4:58 pm EST

The poster 90’s suck is obviously some 15yo MORON. To try and say the 90’s suck and that’s why the 80’s are back is preposterous. You obviously weren’t alive in the 80’s because they were horrible. Thanks to the 80’s we have bad pop music, people did waaay too much coke and weren’t able to think straight. 80’s are back because of trendhumpers like you. Not because they were awesome.

Radiohead isn’t grunge also and they’re the best band on the planet. King Missle? Gimme a freaking break. Seems like you’ve got a detachable brain.

really?? | 4/30/2009, 2:24 pm EST

The Offspring are a great band and the Pumpkins (90’s pumpkins) and Radiohead suck? I just puked in my mouth….

Jeff Hoe | 4/30/2009, 11:05 am EST

Dear person who posted the 90’s sucked.

Man, your fucking retarded. Grunge was the worst part of the 90’s. I am ashamed to know that the 90’s music scene is remembered by grunge. Smashing pumkins have always been terrible (as well as radiohead), Chris Cornell has always only been able to sing in the stuido for some reason? No true talent there. Eddy Vedder was just trying to get his opinion across and make a public act when they did that commercial.

And you should think of the 90’s for all the good music that came out. Belle and Sebastian, Ween, The Offspring, King Missile, you know?

ragin' dick | 4/30/2009, 1:54 am EST

Tom Morello is just trying to open people’s eyes to the horrible reality that is our world. Yes he’s made a assload of money , but he also has numerous charities around the world. stlmon need’s to eat a dick!

frog leg | 4/29/2009, 1:37 pm EST

To Jomah- what he says is that there will be more jobless and MORE homeless. meaning average everyday people who are not homeless now- WILL be homeless soon. Yes, average everyday people in the U.S. have ipods. The statement also doesn’t neccessarily say that it is the homeless that will be the ones storming Wall Street. However, many of the comments on here don’t seem to be trying to making honest intellectual statements, so I don’t know why I’m bothering.

The 90's sucks! | 4/29/2009, 3:00 am EST

5 facts that proof that the 90’s fail:

1-Chris Cornell recorded an album with Justin Timbarlake.

2-Smashing Pumkins are teaming with Hanson.

3-Pearl Jam are doing “TV studio” shows.

4-Rage Against The Machine keep talking about third world poverty while livin in a Hollywood mansion.

5-Radiohead are doing commercials for the biggest monopoly network CBS (and the Grammys too).

What’s next? Tool produced by P.Diddy?

I wonder why the 80’s are back!

STAGE against the machine.

You’ve got to love rock star champagne socialists. Maybe Morello should try reading The Black Book of Communism instead of Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky. He’d come across like much less of a hypocritical douche.

The Hater | 4/28/2009, 5:42 pm EST

You know, there’s a whole world of grey between the black-and-white of free market fundamentalism on one side or communism on the other.

For some reason Americans seem to think it’s either one or the other, all or nothing. People like RATM promote this dumb, polarized attitude among many others.

PW1206 | 4/28/2009, 5:15 pm EST

Typically, people that promote republican talking points on websites aren’t people that have felt the full benefit of the capitalist system. I don’t get that. I don’t get why people who work hard for too little money for their entire lives support a system that might as well keep them in slavery. Individual achievement isn’t rewarded in America anymore, the only thing that matters is where you were born and who your parents are. If I’m going to work too hard for too little money for my entire life, I’d rather have more vacation time, universal health care, and a good safety net in case one of the well-born decides to take my job, and the jobs of my fellows, away. That’s the least the top 1% can do for me, since I make their stuff and buy it, too.

Anonymous | 4/28/2009, 2:37 pm EST

Tom Morello needs to go to move to communist China because he is always bitching about capitalism, where motivated people who get off there ass are successful. Deal with it.

jomah | 4/28/2009, 2:06 pm EST

Yeah, there’s going to be a lot of homeless people listening to I-Pods… Really?!! I love Morello, but that comment just sounds out of touch… so this album is for those who are “suffering” with a Nano and BMW’s with cloth seats?

The Hater | 4/28/2009, 1:51 pm EST

Jesus, I should’ve known those two ultra-lame Limp Bizkit-aspiring sounding songs on the NINJA ep had something to do with the ulistenable shit that is RATM.

Wow, these guys are serious??

atl | 4/28/2009, 1:46 pm EST

Hey. How come my comment got deleted? I said “I love the riffs. I love the voice. I love the lyrics. Sounds badass!” Weird. I also want to comment to stlmom: After the rich of this country robbed us all with the mortgage crisis and then robbed us with the bailout, you are one of the minority in the world who thinks this system works. Capitalism creates a never ending stream of poor people who will never get rich and very few of them will be comfortable in their lives. As for you saying “Get a job”, that’s what millions of Americans wish they could do.

stlmom | 4/28/2009, 1:22 pm EST

I’d debate you in person anyday jimhb, read up on your liberal talking points….I guess you are looking forward to everyone being EQUALLY poor, Morello slams Capitalism but makes a ton of money because of it HYPOCRITE. now go get a job

nothing revolutionary about it, but theyll be sweet when they open for NINJA

Boots’ is an intellectual!

heathen2002 | 4/28/2009, 12:17 pm EST

Morello’s awesome, but this doesn’t do anything for me…Boring…

KC | 4/28/2009, 12:09 pm EST

Why Tom? Why? This is terrible. Boots Riley is a horrible rapper. Just a rehash of all the same RATM shit. Rage is awesome, nightwatchmen is ok, street sweeper is terrible.

Bored | 4/28/2009, 11:53 am EST

Rage guitar riffs; different rapper. How original and revolutionary.

If Tom and Zack are gonna keep putting out Rage “facsimiles,” why not just write new Rage material. These side projects (Lion and Street Sweeper) are boring.

stlmom is a dbag that is need of an education

Anonymous | 4/28/2009, 10:29 am EST
