AMC Muscle Cars

The now extinct American Motor Corp early on had the Rambler Rebel, AMC AMX, Javelin, Rebel, Machine, Spirit, AMX and more.

Few things embody the spirit of American car manufacturing more than the muscle car. This piece of automotive handy work was quite unlike anything ever seen in American car manufacturing at the time and some might argue that it ushered in a new movement for US auto manufacturing of performance cars that still exists today.

One curious footnote to muscle cars was AMC Muscle Cars. Curious because the American Motor Corp, had been known, since the mid 50's, for the fuel efficient Rambler. So how does a successful automaker, known for its fuel economic vehicles see as its next logical step to enter the market of fuel hungry, power to spare muscle cars, competition? While the move to produce muscle car to compete with the big three inevitably was AMC's downfall, it did, however, in the short run produce a lot excitement and many great muscle cars.

A big seller when it came to muscle cars was the Ford Mustang as well as the Plymouth Barracuda. In an attempt to compete with these selling giants, AMC introduced the Rambler Marlin Fastback. While this was somewhat of a disappointment as far as sales were concerned, it did, however, allow AMC some credibility in the muscle car market.

This credibility lead AMC to decide to put a large V-8 motor into the Marlin and the more fuel conscience Rebel. With this very popular change, AMC Muscle Cars had finally become a real player in the muscle car market. The same year AMC also introduced the Javelin, and a smaller two-seater version, the AMX. The Javelin proved to be a much better product to grab AMC a bigger piece of the pony car pie than the Marlin ever could have

Along the way, AMC introduced a host of other muscle cars. In 1969, AMC offered up, with the assistance of shifter manufacturer Hurst, the 390 horsepower Rambler/SC. A year later, the automaker introduced the 340 horsepower Rebel Machine. In 1971, when the Rebel nameplate was retired, the Hornet/SC took its place as the most budget friendly of AMC's performance cars. However, in 1974, once the Javelin's production run ended, so to did AMC.

While AMC Muscle Cars spanned only around 10 years from beginning to end, a relatively short period of time, they did make an indelible mark on performance cars of the time, as well as today. These memorable muscle cars were not just a footnote on the muscle car industry as many thought they would be. These vehicles made AMC a major player in the muscle car market. As a result, it has made owning one of these vehicles today a highly prized and valuable possession - AMC muscle cars.
