BRENDAN Rodgers was appointed as Watford's First Team Manager during the 2008/09 season, joining from Chelsea Football Club where he was in charge of the Blues' reserve team.

Rodgers was born in 1973 in Carnlough, on the Antrim coast of Northern Ireland, and was schooled in nearby Ballymena, taking up an early opportunity to become an Irish schoolboy international.

Having played as a schoolboy for the Republic of Ireland, Rodgers' played limited club football for the likes of Ballymena and Reading before he curtailed his playing career early, at the age of 20.

Having decided to move into coaching his first position came in 1995 courtesy of the Royals, as their under 15s coach.

During his time at the Madejski Stadium Rodgers also took charge of the under 17s side before becoming Assistant Academy Director in 1998.

After progressing to the role of Academy Director in 2003 his talents were spotted by Chelsea and their manager Jose Mourinho, who appointed him to the position of Youth Team Coach in 2004 two month's after his own arrival at the club.

After spending two years in the club's Academy set-up Brendan was then handed the responsibility of becoming the Blues' Reserve Team Coach

He held this position until the 24 November 2008 when he was announced as the new Watford manager, taking over the side in 20th position in the Championship table.

His first game in charge of the Hornets came at home to Doncaster Rovers on Saturday 29th November, having previously watched Malky Mackay take charge of the side against Bristol City as they played just 24 hours after the unveiling of the new Watford boss.

Rodgers' joined the Hornets at the age of 35 and, ironically, shares his January 26 birthday with former Chelsea colleague Joe Mourinho.

He is married to wife Susan, whose father played for Aston Villa, Chester City and Shrewsbury Town.

Brendan and Susan have two children, one daughter and one son, Anton, who is an Academy player at Chelsea Football Club.
