Livid Shearer To Throw The Book At Reckless Barton After Alonso Lunge

Joey Barton protests after leaving Xabi Alonso in a heap in Newcastle's defeat at Anfield

Alan Shearer will hammer Joey Barton with a £120,000 fine after accusing him of ‘letting down’ Newcastle with a senseless red card at Anfield on Sunday.

The Newcastle midfielder was sent off for the fourth time in his career after ploughing into Liverpool’s Xabi Alonso with a two-footed lunge in the 77th minute of his side’s crushing 3-0 defeat which left his side stuck third from bottom of the Barclays Premier League.

Newcastle’s angry caretaker-manager warned him to expect the maximum fine of two weeks’ wages, saying: ‘He wasn’t unlucky to be sent off, it was the right decision.

‘The referee was spot on showing him a straight red card, and I agree with the decision completely.

‘We will be without Joey for the rest of the season now and I’m not happy at all.

‘He has let me down, definitely, and the same goes for the club as a whole and himself.

‘He has let everyone down without a doubt. He did not need to jump in like that and he has apologised.

‘From a disciplinary point of view, I will be doing whatever I can.’

The former Match of the Day pundit, who was taunted with chants of ‘You should have stayed on the telly’, said next Monday’s relegation showdown with Middlesbrough will be the biggest any of his squad have faced.

‘This game was never going to decide our fate but ones like Middlesbrough will,’ he said.

‘It is the most important one of my career and the same applies to every single Newcastle player.

‘I have no complaints whatsoever about the outcome today because we were beaten by a very good team.

‘By the end I was desperately hoping the referee would only add 30 seconds rather than two or three minutes.

‘Michael Owen wasn’t happy at being left on the bench but I wouldn’t want him to be.

‘The main thing is he is a great professional and he responded in a professional manner.’

On a bad day for the North East, furious Sunderland manager Ricky Sbragia kept his players locked in the dressing room for almost an hour after his side’s pitiful surrender against Everton.

His players were booed off after David Moyes’ side eased to a 2-0 win, leaving Sunderland deep in relegation trouble.

Sbragia admitted: ‘We were so poor I would have booed myself off.’
