INTERVIEW: De La Soul :: URB Readers Pose The Questions To Posdnuos, Trugoy The Dove and Maseo

By Michael Vazquez   Photography by file

05/06/09 :: URB web

More than a few URB readers responded to our open invitation to interview De La Soul to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of 3 Feet High and Rising and their new album, Are You In?, part of the Nike Run series of iTunes releases. And we here at URB are proud of the caliber of our readers, who asked both serious and fun questions: Who would win in a Posdnuos, Trugoy The Dove and Maseo battle royale? What do Johnny Cash Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder have in common? Will the world see another Native Tongues album? How many feathers are on a Perdue chicken? Extra-credit goes to the reader who asked, “Why should I care about hip-hop anymore?"

Pos took over most of the responses here, but some readers' questions about influences and favorite producers elicited answers from all three statesmen. If your question isn’t here, that’s only because brothers are in Australia and typing responses to more than say twenty questions while holding everything down on the road can be rough. Thanks to De La and our passionate, informed readers for making this happen. In the meantime, who else would YOU like to interview for URB? Let us know and we’ll make it happen.

How badly does Dove need a haircut?
More bad than me since he can still grow hair

Any collaboration with Prince Paul on your next album?  What
collaborations are you guys doing outside your next album?

Paul and Dave (Plug 2) are working on an entire project together called “Modest Millionaires” but at the moment there is nothing he is working with De La  on. Maseo has an artist named Bill Ray coming out who appears on "Greedy Man” on the Nike album and I'm brewing a few side projects myself

Do you think the world today needs the Daisy Age again, considering all
the wars, starvation and corrupt corporate politics?   Who’s your favorite graffiti artist?

The world could definitely use some daisy in their life!!! Joe Buckingham is my fav graph artist

When are the solo albums going to manifest, if at all? What’s in the  iPod in rotation currently, besides De La  Soul ish?
Solo album from me [is] soon [to] come, ‘have a few songs in the can. I'm listening to Diamond District, some new Alchemist, and that's about it

De La Soul battle royale, every man for himself: who wins, and why?

Maseo would win, ‘cuz he has a louder growl and a massive and hard wrester stomach

Who's each member's personal favorite producer collaboration?

Dave: Jay Dee (Dilla)
Pos: Jay Dee (Dilla)
Maseo: Jay Dee (Dilla)

Why it got to be like that?  How many feathers are on a Perdue chicken?
Why it have to be like what?..... There are too many feathers on a Perdue chicken, that’s why I eat Tyson chicken

Your album cover art and videos have been some of the best in Hip-Hop.  How important is the graphic and visual element to your music? You have been early in finding some classic people in Hip-Hop on your albums (ATCQ, Black Sheep, Mos Def, J Dilla) Who's next?
[The] Visual is always important to us and it never had to be our face on the cover (De La  soul dead cover) but something we felt spoke to and from the title.  Next up through us is...........................................(you insert a name)
