- Thomas K. Longstreth, 52, former undersecretary of defense for readiness and training, died April 28. Mr. Longstreth worked at the Defense Department from 1990 until 2001. At the Defense Department, he worked first as defense planner and policy analyst on the staff of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, working directly for Chairman Colin Powell. He also directed task forces for the secretary of defense on Iraq, Bosnia and Somalia and rose through the ranks to undersecretary.
