Missions

The Center for Cardiovascular and Respiratory Sciences has been established to strengthen and unite basic, clinical and translational research in cardiovascular and respiratory diseases at West Virginia University . A second and equally important mission is to provide first-rate training of pre- and postgraduate students, residents and fellows to produce the next generation of scholars in the cardiovascular and respiratory sciences.

Center Profile

The cross-disciplinary nature of the Center provides an environment conducive to collaborative research and teaching. The Center is comprised of investigators who hold tenure-track appointments in the following academic departments:

The Center operates in close partnership with these departments, and is viewed as an extension of the departments where interdisciplinary collaboration is emphasized. Modern core research facilities located within or close to the Center strengthen the collaborative efforts of our investigators. Our members are also committed to establishing collaborative links with other interdisciplinary research initiatives at WVU.

Our faculty members participate in various activities that enhance the academic and intellectual environment of not only the Center, but also the WVU Health Sciences community as a whole. Such activities include a regular seminar series featuring nationally and internationally recognized scientists, a monthly center-wide research meeting, and a yearly symposium on a cutting-edge topic in cardiovascular research.

Through targeted recruiting, we are committed to attracting additional scientists with the research interests, tools and expertise to complement those of our current investigators. Our goal is to build a critical mass of investigators in certain thematic research areas for the acquisition of programmatic funding to support further growth of our research and training activities.
