The return of Auto Union

Chas Hallett
There's an interesting rumour from Germany: that the new mega-corp that will be created when Porsche and VW merge will be called Auto Union.

This isn't just another example of the Germans revitalising an old brand a la Maybach. It does make historical sense. After all, Auto Union was the amalgamation of four German car makers: Horch, Audi, DKW and Wanderer, which created the four-ring logo that Audi still uses today.

It also makes sense for VW, finally ending the confusion between the VW group and the VW brand.

There's also the interesting fact that Ferdinand Porsche engineered the famous Auto Union racing cars of the 1930's.

Auto Union coming back? Why not? It makes plenty of sense.

A very old story indeed.

Even before the latest developments, there have been constant suggestions in Germany for a number of years that Volkswagen (the group) be renamed Auto Union so that VW is seen more explicitly as a car brand and peoiple don't get confused between the two.

Someone will be popping up on here with the entirely novel idea of rebranding Vauxhall as Opel next.

Auto Union is a great name and one that deserves bringing back to life.

@Audi tastic

I agree it's a good idea - it's just that it's not a new one, so I'm not sure it'll happen.

Or is this just a safety in numbers excercise to A. safe money by sharing costs  or B.when the recession ends they would be better placed to dominate the car industry,because it seems to me everyone wants to be like Toyota, and do we really need another car maker?,what inovation in car creation thats going to be diferent to everybody else that nobody else's thought of going to be?,maybe its Dysons idea to replace wipers with vacuum power!
