Professor Steve Chapman appointed new Principal of Heriot-Watt University

Heriot-Watt University today announced that Professor Steve Chapman will succeed Professor Anton Muscatelli as Principal and Vice-Chancellor from 1 September 2009.

Lord George Penrose, Chair of Court and Chair of the University’s selection committee said after the University’s Court unanimously confirmed the appointment:

“I am delighted that Heriot-Watt University has appointed Professor Chapman as its next Principal. Professor Chapman brings with him great experience in higher education and strengths of leadership in a research intensive university.

“I am sure that with this appointment, Heriot-Watt University will continue its growth and become an even more successful institution.”

Professor Chapman, 50, is currently Vice-Principal (Pro Vice-Chancellor) for Planning, Resources and Research Policy at the University of Edinburgh. He said:

“Heriot-Watt University is one of the country’s leading institutions and has gone from strength to strength in recent years. I look forward to continuing on the foundation set by Focus on the Future and to working with colleagues to grow the University’s influence.

“The University has excelled in recent times in its research ratings and in its league table rankings. I believe that with a clear vision for the future, we are set to continue on this course and become one of the country’s leading institutions in science, business, technology and languages.”
