Seitaridis steals Gloria's thunderSaturday 21 July 2007
AFC Gloria 1922 Bistrita are celebrating a historic victory after beating Club Atlético de Madrid 2-1 in the opening leg of their UEFA Intertoto Cup third round tie.
The tiny Romanian side beat Atlético's Primera División rivals Real Zaragoza 2-1 in the first leg of a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup first-round fixture back in 1994, but went on to lose the tie. Giourkas Seitaridis' away goal made a repeat of that outcome look likely, but that took little away from a fine afternoon's work for Gloria.
While the Spanish side were clearly more organised and skilful, Gloria made their chances count. They took the lead after just seven minutes as the Atlético defence failed to deal with a long ball into the area, allowing Dorel Zaharia to strike home from ten metres out. Miguel Ferrer headed just over for the visitors five minutes later.
Gloria struck again after 40 minutes. Once more, a pass from deep caught the Spanish side cold with Cosmin Tilinca finding the target with a low effort to the delight of the home crowd. However, the second half was to be a different story, although Atlético ended the game with just one goal to show for their dominant performance.
While they had plenty of possession, it was a moment of individual brilliance that gave Atlético their reward, with Greece right-back Seitaridis rattling a shot home off the underside of the crossbar from more than 30 metres. The advantage now lies with Javier Aguirre's side for the second leg in Madrid next Saturday.
